From this.
Maybe the name has something to do with cloning and the expression of gene 514 and the synthesis of ATP5E? ...has something to do with adrenal gland too... makes sense to boost that in combat... maybe?

Yes that would kind of make sense.
Edit: In fact I think you figured it out. Kudos.

...just a second thought. Maybe the dust part is taken from:
Quote: "earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust; in sure and certain hope of the Resurrection to eternal life"
Eternal life, again, as a clone using pod technology would know.
Quote: In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.
...part of an English burial service taken from the bible. The "Dust" and "514" might represent the perceived duality of existence in that light. On one side the 'spiritual' or philosophical take on death that has essentially spanned the whole of human history across cultures, and the deliberate tinkering of evolution and fate itself on the other.
Gold Magnate worthy?

Gene ID: 514 only expresses one of the few components to the catalytic core of ATP Synthase. Over-expression of one gene without its binding partners will quickly flag the resultant protein product for proteosomal degradation. I doubt this is the reason they chose the name.

Well... that's not all it does. They think it may be related to some types of schizophrenia and neurodegenerative diseases too (Human Gene 514: ATP synthase, H+ transporting, mitochondrial F1 complex, epsilon subunit from: Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes info here). That may be something a dust bunny can relate too. I thought I read something about it's function in cloning cells too, which sprang the game to mind for me.

Heh, not the protein itself, degradation of it. I still dont see what this has to do with the name of a FPS.

There was, if memory serves, the idea that DUST514 would be able to field matches the same size as MAG does on the PS3, which is 256 players per team. Thus 2 teams with 256 players would equal 512 players, with each team also fielding one overall commander, bringing the total up to 514.

pretty sure it's already been mentioned that Dust 514 is a 'homage' to the game Elite/Elite plus/Frontier etc. which had a system either with the same name or a very similar name

LOL! I was just looking into gene 514 a little more and google came up with this thread in #3 for the term "gene 514". Maybe now EvE will get a few new geneticists playing the game!

Dust 514 is a part of, but also an expansion of the Eve universe. The next step. So, the name had to satisfy two criteria: it had to be some sort of a Biblical allusion, and in Latin.
The problem is, against their wishes and better judgment, the real CCP were forced to make it exclusively for consoles (well, PS3 only ). So, the Latin nomenclature and the Biblical allusions both had to be sufficiently veiled to make it palatable for the target audience, and instead of
pulvis sit
they first opted for
polvere sia (Italian being the next best thing)
but this was still deemed far too intellectual, and they ended up bastardizing it all the way into
dust 514.
Basically, instead of a beautiful Amarr name/expansion, they went with a cheesy Minmatar spin off (much like with the CQ).
