The turrets themselves are beautiful, the best feature of Incarna. Unfortunately, the icons are a blurry mess. At least run a sharpen filter over the icons or something.

These are the large variants against simple and cluttered backgrounds of various brightness, and the old icons are consistently more distinguishable, identifiable, clear andà wellà iconic. Reduce the sizes and the difference becomes even more pronounced.

I need to agree, the effect's are OK, but the icons are horrible. Get back them to the original form (including salvager, tractor beam)

The Icons are total fail. This reminds me of when Sony decided to update the spell icons they went from nice easily identified stylized representations to highly detailed pictures that probably looked great if blown up to full screen size but were just multicolored blobs in the UI. They were so awful that the first thing I did was figure out how to get the old ones back.
That isn't an option here where the UI isn't modifiable.
As to the actual models, I haven't really looked at all of them yet but the small auto's just look wrong. They are way over-sized and it's they just don't match the style of the old ship artwork.
I have to agree with those asking wth hell were they thinking. With all the things this game needed to spend the time and resources to redesign something that worked perfectly fine.
I mean I get it that the art guys aren't going to be re-balancing hybrids but they could have been redoing some ship models like the making the Imicus somewhat less repellent looking.

While I'm all for new icons and spiffing up the UI in any way possible, Some of the new icons are downright ugly and in dire need of tweaking. Specifically the laser turrets appear to me as disfigured blobs of brown plastic & fuzzy/blurry textures.

How funny. The stuff you actually need to look at in critical moments got ruined, and the so did the time critical stuff involved with the Hangar UI.

While I love the new 3D turrets, I really HATE the new HUD icons. It's actually the most disturbing thing of all in Incarna IMHO.

Dear CCP: weapon icons, not weapon portraits. There is a difference.
Sure, have the item in the hangar look like the turret that will be attached to the ship. Icons on the HUD (ie: buttons we press and the little icon up next to the target we're shooting at) should be high contrast, low bandwidth. Ideally, one- or two-bit bandwidth :)

I used to rotate my camera for best viewing angle on the battlefield. Now I'm looking for bright spots to be able to see the turrets icons .
Also funny how people keep discussing with Tippia thinking they're right. That happens maybe once a year, so totally not worth the time.

It's not about recognition (although, on that topic, the number of things you have to recognize has increased sixfold, so even that one is ever so slightly debatableà), but about clarity.
When you create a "fire escape this way" sign, you don't take a photo of someone running away from a fire, pointing his arms in the direction of the door you want people to go through because that is not an effective way to communicate the message. Instead, you have a highly simplified image of a fire, a running stick-figure, and an arrow, on a plain but eye-catching background, which together gives you the message "fire? run! over there →".
Icons do their job far better if they are simple graphical representations than an exact image of the thing they're meant to represent. Icons also do their job far better if they can stand out against cluttered backgrounds. Icons do their job even better if they can stand up to a dynamic environment, where they get contrasted against a number of different colours and patterns.
The old icons did all of that, because they were actual icons. The new ones do none of that, because they aren't icons.
They're very pretty pictures that kind-of-work as illustrations against a simple, bright background, and if that's your purpose, they might have some use. +1 X for crappy gun icons.
The contrast on some is so poor you can't see what target you've activated a turret on, and they all look terrible when shrunk down so small. It's like the art team got lazy and just scaled down a rendering of the turret and called it a day.
