Couldn't have said it better...icons donŠt have to be exactly like the items they represent...actually they shouldn't be
imagine veldspar and other roids, to have icons that looked exactly like they do now in space...
^^ this!
Why I just moving onto using turrets, now all the icons are the same, then I look deeper, there all different, even the t1 and t2 of each gun, but still all look the same, now why did they have to change the icons, it was pleasing to the eye before, I saw a miner 1 icon I knew it was a miner, didn't need to know if it was special in any way. I saw a picture of a gun, and went hey its a gun! Now its a little confusing between the 2 fitted modules on the noob ship!
Being the assets are already there somewhere can you make a option to bring them back? Being as the client already 8GB a extra few megabytes would not matter much, as I guess the new icons probably take up more than a few extra megabytes anyway!

I agree here.
Icons are supposed to be... ICONIC. I suggest the designer to take a look at a dictionary about the icon definition. Also I would like to ask the boss there in CCP two things:
- Give the designer who did this crap some GOOD wacks, I would choose bamboo sticks for this. It needs to be cruel, if not, he can make the same mistake in the future. He needs a lesson...
- ROLL BACK FOR GOD'S SAKE
I have a 24" IPS monitor at 2440 resolution and this **** is still not recognisable.

I totally agree, please roll back to the old icons. Or give it another round with a new designer. I think they all look more or less the same now; a random mess of dark pixels on top of some more dark pixels. It's even hard to tell the difference between tractor beams and salvagers now!

Maybe this is all part of an evil plan from CCP, to force us to buy monocles.

Well, the new icons really really suck - i cant tell anything apart??
Just seems like different piles of **** used as icons - the older were much much better.
I just dont get why CCP would opt for this?

Speaking of icons, there are several other icons that seriously need an overhaul.
The whole power of icons is readability at a glance and yes they have missed the mark with the new turret icons. Another example is the ship fitting icon. It represents the idea of fitting your ship. It's actually supposed to be a ship surrounded by a web and some other modules. But as an icon it looks like a blue shapeless blob. The one who designed it had absolutely no sense of scale.
Or what about the market button? Even after years of playing I know what the market button looks like and where it is, but I have absolutely no idea what it represents. I mean, look at it. It looks like some kind of grey greebled box with chopsticks on top and some blue blobs and a high tech envelope with a rewind button in the background. All signed by Zorro.
I completely understand the insurance button though, a chained turd. It means you gotta lock your **** or someone will come and steal it.
I'm just happy that after 10 years they managed to make different icons for MWD and AB which I guess only became really pressing with the advent of dualprop fits. Also kudos for the difference for BPO and BPC items.
I do believe CCP have people who understand graphical design. The overview buttons are ok I guess and the resist icons on the fitting screen are great examples of good icons.
It really shouldn't take more than a couple of days to get this sorted out so get cracking.

AddMeTooPls.. Looks like the new icons are really part and parcel of the whole Incarna junk package, making this "expansion" even a little bit worse.

Originally by: Fi1ippo Get your vision corrected, the turret icon are great.
Or you could learn to read the descriptions. I know it's hard.
Sorry, maybe you need to take a look at a good dictionary about ICON definition.
If you need to READ the description the design failed.
Trolling will not be of any help.

Don't agree with rolling back. Don't have an issue with how they are represented in the hangar. However, the fact that there is a delay in displaying turrets as you scroll through the hangar, is very very bad.
Also, how they are displayed next to targets in combat is really terrible. Can't distinguish much of anything, and its frequently hard to tell that you have assigned guns to a target. The new blurred fuzzy faded sloppy icons should be removed. There should be an easy, more immersive, and more user interface friendly way of representing the turrets when they are assigned to targets.
On a side note I'd like to add how disappointed I am with the Blaster turrets. I know blasters suck, but did CCP really have to go and make the new turrets visually accurate in that regard? Many of them actually look like futuristic vacuum cleaners. Which is doubly ironic considering my drones seem to now make the appropriate sucking noise. Can't decide whether to switch to lasers or projectiles. At least those turrets actually look cool. |

I agree the icons on the target look like a pixelated blob and are horrible but the new turrets look fantastic (complete sidenote, 125mm and 150mm rails should be switched the 125mm looks beefier.) Just get some icons that do them justice when your dishing out the hot justice and I'd be a happy camper.

/sign. Seems like the icons were designed for something much smaller than their actual use. Giant blobular masses.

Unfortunately the turret icons seem to be simply slightly blurry pictures of the new turret models. I guess they got so excited about their new turrets they wanted to plaster the image everywhere. However as icons they don't work. Some else already posted this but it's worth repeating: http://ignorethecode.net/blog/2010/01/21/realism_in_ui_design/
tldr: When you have an icon as part of an interface, it's better to use a limited amount of detail and make it into a symbol, which will work better since you need to convey the idea of a _____ rather than reminding the user what the _____ looks like.
The old icons were not perfect, but worked better than a flattened version of a 3D model. The old tractor beam icon was the best, even if you never heard the name, or used one, you could guess it's function from that icon. Now it takes a moment to tell it apart from other modules; so if you're getting shot at during that moment you could be screwed...
Also the lack of color of shading on some models doesn't help. It's bad enough on the actual models, making them look like silhouettes of themselves, but it makes the icons in little blobs.

YES roll back !
turret designs now suck! and icons are supposed to be discriptive in some way? meaning you are able to tell what they might do ? like tractor beams used to be? and salvagers were at least distinguishable from everything else now what? its an absolute travesty .. only pure hysteria could allow these icons and turret designs to stay .. oh yes we live in a wolrd of american hysteria don't we i forgot!!!!!

Yeah turret icons are terrible! Too dark, they need at least a yellow outline or something!
The tractor and salvager icons are very bad compared to the old ones. I would like to see them coming back!
Icons should be functional, not pictures of the turrets itself...

Totally agree! Functionality over form!!! Please change the icons so that they are visible and identifyable in the UI.

The new icons are pretty bad.
But theres alot of stuff in the gui thats even more annoying, like the random target attempts when you hold ctrl to target something with your mouse, the obscenely small overload buttons and finally the right click menus.
Lots of things to work on here.

This annoyed me so much, I cant find turrets at a glance in a station hold, I have to concentrate or switch to one of the list views...
The only reason I can think of, is that CCP is trying to break bots that use the graphics of the turrets?... but what about mining turrets?... did they get changed?
Put the old icons back and move that 'artist' into a management position, they arn't doing any good in their current role.

Edited by: Guillame Herschel on 08/07/2011 14:01:34 I can't distinguish them against the black of space. They are invisible to me unless I swing my view around to place a nebula behind them. Game is broken and unplayable.
All it would take to remedy this problem is to place a bright border on the icons.

Idiocracy continues... Who cares? If you don't like the game don't play it. If you don't like the gun icons use launchers . But don't expect ccp to revert the icons. As far as i see it its all intentional. Btw some of the guns look ridiculous. Like the small blasters on a daredevil. They are positioned on the "wings" and when u start warping they stow in the wings regardless if there is a space for that or no.
Anyways... who cares. At least they do damage

All those who post here like the game and play it. To suggest that they should refrain from asking for improvements to it (especially when they are as easy as a roll back) shows something on your part... whats the name of that? Not idiocracy, too elaborate, simple idiocy. I should smack you a good deal more but I like your ally tag.
@CCP: its a bad habit to desperately and repeatedly try to fix the few things that are definately not broken and then as expected fail at it reliably. Pls do get a grip at your earliest convenience...
