I stopped playing here and for some time in between TBC and WoTLK, so I might of missed something somewhere.
TL;DR Just because you call a content patch an expansion doesn't mean it is.

Doubt it really truly free anyway, why do you think the sub fee is set higher than a lot of other MMOs.
