Since this is an anonymous board, for the protection of future applicants to the corporation, I'll take a gamble and give a bump and some visibility to this site:
CCP Employees speak anonymously about the internal state of affairs
It may have been posted as the start of another thread, but to be honest, there's far too many threads going at the moment for me to know.
My interest in sharing this link, which was buried in another thread, is to point out that people's anger need not be aimed at the employees of CCP.
It should be aimed at the MANAGEMENT of CCP. Employees go to do their jobs, do as their told, for the sake of their families and livelihoods. CCP's leadership promised us loyalty to their customer base, and so it rests on them, not the people programming the game, or the poor souls who drew the short straw and were sent forth to be messengers of a very disappointed, and almost off-topic, PR patchover (Zulu's Dev Blog being the culmination). Even the employees who wrote articles in the newsletter (even Soundwave) deserve a place of their own to share thoughts and discuss. It's not on them.
There is still time, still hope, for things to turn around, but it has to come from top, and it has to address what players are actually asking for. Which should be obvious by now.
WILL AURUM BE USED TO OBTAIN IN GAME ADVANTAGES OVER OTHER PLAYERS??
CCP needs to stay competitive, I get that. To this day, their competitive edge is that they don't cater to market trends, and stay connected to the community. That competitive edge is eroding.....fast.
CCP leadership, please be fearless. Step forward and take ownership.

Edited by: Jason1138 on 24/06/2011 23:15:57 its insane to sit here and read CCP employees talking about jumping ship to save themselves and then see players telling everyone to stick it out to "save" the game
if the guys making it don't think it can be saved then i think i'm gonna just go with that
"Sounds very much like a typical cross section of people from any company to be honest."
every single review (10 of them) on that page says salaries are low, communication is terrible, and management is unprofessional. That is not a typical company where i come from, maybe it is for your area

LOL As if you didn't know. You must apply to CCP asap.
But 1) I was just reposting anyway and 2)You put more work into your post than I did so what do I care as long as people read this because it's pretty fascinating.

"Fun game play is not a priority, promises made to investors and aesthetics are. æIf it looks good then it is goodÆ is an often heard motto. CCP is committed to use technology in EVE as well as WoD and DUST, so certain features are made and used in EVE knowing they will not be fun, nor fit EVE and no one expects them to be appreciated by the playerbase. Alienating the playerbase of EVE further. Objections from employees who point this out are waved away." I think that says it all right there....

The last few days, I have this crushing feeling inside that I've invested years into a game for now, nothing. Having read this. Compared to the date it was posted, and when Incarna was launched... *slap*
CCP, you made an immigrant feel useless. Considering this guy moved to a whole new continent, you make him feel he's not going to advance anywhere. This guy could potentially be your best addition and improve the direction of the game, instead of hindering him in a closet and making him work like a slave picking cotton or building railways.
Great corporation.

That is the message on fanfests as well, still bigger and better organized corps make the same mistakes, so its not all lost.
CCP seems just to grow up finally it seems. Why a forum in the year 2011 still has no automatic double post merge which can be done even with javascript mostly is beyond my understanding. |

written by one of the employees:
Quote: CCP does not take criticism well and often ignores retrospectives. Criticism is considered to be a negative attitude and is severely frowned upon. A lot of effort goes into maintaining a good morale with a lot of internal PR. After all itÆs cheaper to print posters than pay an average salary to employees.
Several years now CCP has predicated insane subscriber goals that cannot be met. Naturally this is met with scepticism by the employees but it falls on deaf ears. The result is that the company is suffering because we cannot sustain the development of EVE, DUST and WOD. EVE is not creating enough revenue which means that solutions are sought, solutions that CCP was vehemently against a few years ago.

I agree, and EVE has always had a 'lead'er figure, but management as I understand it were in touch with their employees and their customers. Current management are so twisted I can't help but wonder if these guys would have fitted in perfectly in Bush/Blair's regime. Oh, and sorry for calling you a fool.I got lost in the moment

I sincerely hope this is not how people actually feel, like they've wasted their time.
Eve is entertainment. Have you not been entertained up to this point?? This was why I was so mad at the bittervets initially, because like I tell the occasional disgruntled corpmember (ingame) if you're not happy and you're not having fun, you should go where you do have fun.
And this is what kills me - we're still at the slippery slope argument phase right now. Nothing fundamentally destructive has ACTUALLY happened. We could ignore monocles, get nicer graphics cards (which are fun anyways), and keep on hanging out with the friends we love, but people are bailing before the **** actually hits the fan.
We are at a crossroads - bail now, and ensure the doom of Eve Online, or try to have as much fun as we can until something stupid like AURUM for skillpoints or AURUM for fittings or AURUM for standings gets implemented.
If we all quit now, it is the community that pulls the plug on Eve, not CCP. I'd rather keep protesting, hope they see the writing on the wall and turn the ship around in the next few weeks as the fires continue to rage, and have as much pew pew fun as I can with my friends in the mean time. I hope others join me.
But please, if you made friends, and had fun, don't tell yourself it was a waste. I will alway cherish the fun I've had up to this point, and the fun I plan on having until CCP actually ruins the game. At this point, its not ruined yet.

Whether or not the reviews are legit is anyone's guess but the comments are all very similar. Plus they just seem to make sense given what's happening.
For example -
"Fun game play is not a priority, promises made to investors and aesthetics are. æIf it looks good then it is goodÆ is an often heard motto. CCP is committed to use technology in EVE as well as WoD and DUST, so certain features are made and used in EVE knowing they will not be fun, nor fit EVE and no one expects them to be appreciated by the playerbase. Alienating the playerbase of EVE further."
The key thing there is "if it looks good it is good". Incarna's CQ does look pretty damn good (for those of us fortunate enough to have the machines capable of running it) but does it really add anything significant? Nor does it really "fit EVE" - given how according to the lore entering and exiting a pod is supposed to be a pretty traumatic experience is one example of how it doesn't.
"Several years now CCP has predicated insane subscriber goals that cannot be met. Naturally this is met with scepticism by the employees but it falls on deaf ears. The result is that the company is suffering because we cannot sustain the development of EVE, DUST and WOD. EVE is not creating enough revenue which means that solutions are sought, solutions that CCP was vehemently against a few years ago."
The, quite frankyly, ridiculous prices for the items in NeX and all the MT talk do seem to support the above. Zulu himslef said "We will gradually introduce items at other price points, definitely lower and probably higher than whatæs in the store today." I dunno about you but the "probably higher" suggests to me that CCP are content with the item costs as they are. Unless you're makin enough ISK in game to be able to splash 1.6B on a monocle, you're only real choice is to buy PLEX with real cash. I don't have any proof of it but didn't CCP make some kind of promise that real money MT's would never be implemented?
I'd like to mention that while I personally don't agree that MT's that influence game balance are acceptable, cancelling accounts before anything has been confirmed/implemented seems a bit rash so i'll continue to play and hope that all of this is enough of a wake up call to make CCP stop and think.

Thats depressing. EVE isnt dying, CCP is dying. They bit off more than they can chew, they are trying to salvage their company, and they will kill EvE in the process. They need to release DUST early, scrap WoD, or kill off EvE.

I have no doubt there are those at CCP who disagree with their actions on moral grounds, AS WELL as knowing it's doomed to fail and will ultimately cost them their jobs.
Unfortunately those people aren't in management.
What will happen though, is those people (and others, even ones who don't disagree) will be leaving the company soon. Both to not have their name tied to a NGE, AND because if CCP survives this (doubtful) there are going to be a lot less than the 600 jobs they have currently available.

I have worked for some of such kind of companies.
They start and grow VERY well but one day they wake up as proper mid-sized corporations, with all the big challenges and professionalism required to keep them going.
Suddenly the close knit group of friends (now top managers) becomes a liability: they still think they are in the "all friends" phase, while the company outgrows their capability to manage it.

No, no it shouldn't, Why in the **** are half of you people TRYING to destroy EVE? You're going to push them too far, investors will back out, EVE WILL DIE if you people don't stop being so damn blood thirsty.
The way they are handling things it's just a matter of time before EVE dies. The only way to (hopefully) save it is new management. And new management wont happen unless the current management's decisions cost the company enough money for them to be replaced (hence why we cancelling and posting about this in forums around he web instead of just going straight to biomassing.)
So it wont be pretty either way. Either we get them to change course now that we still have time and subscriptions to keep EVE alive or we wait and see EVE milked and destroyed by MTs in an attempt to salvage CCP and the other 2 games from their bad decisions. |

Only speaking for myself, however I wouldn't think it's too far-fetched of an idea that vet players like myself would rather see our beloved game burn in flames than become a pay-to-win mockery.

CCP Games Anonymous in Reykjavik (Iceland): (Past Employee - 2011) ôThe longer you stay the more it hurtsö 1 of 1 people found this helpful
Pros
The Reykjavik office is very family friendly and youÆll often find children running around the office. During lunch it is also acceptable to bring in spouses and children. If you have a family and want to spend additional time with them this could be a way.
ItÆs a place where anyone can get a start in the industry because turnover in departments like QA is still rather high. The way you talk matters more than your actual experience and you can take advantage of this during the interviews.
The Atlanta office is a different place and doesnÆt suffer from the serious unprofessionalism as much as the Reykjavik office. The sad thing is that they too pay the price by seeing their work halted for years at a time to jump ship and bandage EVE up.
Cons
The lack of professionalism is mind blowing. Procedures that are common in other companies are not used here and considered a waste of time. There is no solid vision for EVE which leaves employees with no other option than to start work and find out what is wanted by trial and error, this is what CCP means with Agile development.
Fun game play is not a priority, promises made to investors and aesthetics are. æIf it looks good then it is goodÆ is an often heard motto. CCP is committed to use technology in EVE as well as WoD and DUST, so certain features are made and used in EVE knowing they will not be fun, nor fit EVE and no one expects them to be appreciated by the playerbase. Alienating the playerbase of EVE further. Objections from employees who point this out are waved away.
CCP does not take criticism well and often ignores retrospectives.
Career progression is nonexistent unless you become friends with the right clique of people and use the right corporate buzzwords. Hard work is not something that will set you apart, most people work hard until they become so disillusioned as they realise it makes no difference and slack off.
Combine this with the below average pay (CCP pays 30% to 50% less than other companies) and youÆll often hear a lot of frustration when work is discussed outside of the office by people who have been here for some time. The longer you stay the less you start to care about the game you develope, because no one else does.
Advice to Senior Management
Recruit very senior people from the games industry and actually listen to what they say. Stop believing your own hype. ________________________________________________________________________________________________
It seems this is just a culmination of failed management.

Agreed. I had read this a couple of days ago and it did not sit well. However, it was the Hilmar email that was the final nail for me. I'd love to see things turn around and a change of corporate culture take place but the glassdoor site indicate anything but that will happen.

wow.
If those are real reviews by past/present employees, i must say, it does draw some perspective as to who is at fault. And who is to blame.
I kind of feel sad for the low level employees now. I can totally envision the atmosphere they painted. I often wondered why they spent so much money on all the Fluff i.e. All the TV show stuff, documentary crap, Chess boxing, etc etc, instead of on the game itself.
Maybe theres a bit of immaturity at the very senior levels of the company? And maybe a sort of "Guarded King and his blood henchmen" atmosphere.
I really do feel sorry for the employees who had no choice in the direction of eve.
The senior leadership is playing Dice with their livelihoods. Its sad. He bent on black. And sure enough if the ball isnt spinning on red.......

The testimony of ex-CCP employees is particularly interesting, as it paints a picture of an organisation run by ôSuper-Star Nerd Cow-Boysö, who have no idea how to run a company, and are intent on turning Eve into a cash-cow tech demo. ItÆs particularly disturbing because it indicates that the direction the company is taking is a result of deep-seeded delusions ingrained in its corporate-culture. At the centre of this is a complete disregard for the playerbase of Eve.
CCP should really come cap-in-hand, tearful with gratitude that theyÆve been exposed early while they still have a chance to salvage the situation, and their livelihoods.

Just Wow! I have been (co)assisting some large companies in changing strategies and long term directions. Normally, if it comes top down, it can take at least a year to get a company ship of this size turn its course for 10-20% degrees. It is hard to get the right people on the right seats, even if the management sees the need for it.
In this case it will be worse, as the somewhat autistic Icelandic 'old boys network' will not leave the bridge. They don't even realize they have a problem. The CCP ship is heading for a cliff if you ask me. Especially since the always loyal internet customer base (the hardest crowd for doing damage control once u ***k them over) has hit the nail on its head and is unleashing hell on the internet and in game.
Myself, as a casual player, i have unsubscribed my 2 accounts just after the patch came out. Not because of the MT stuff, but i feel this expansion was made amateurish and proved that this game is considered finished. That all makes perfect sense now. Good luck all, its not gonna be pretty.

It's probably safe at the current rate to say that either Dust or WoD or both will no longer see the light of day.
Can't say I give a sh!t, seeing how the development of those two royally messed up every positive thing about EVE.
The lack of vision referred to is also no surprise, as EVE has stumbled all over the place with its various patches that have then been ignored. The Agile development process is also obviously too much for them too handle.
The one thing that is obvious from all the drama is that CCP needs new, foreign management. Hilmar is lost. --------------------- Countdown to sub running out: 7 days. |

This thread (or rather the site it linked to) was the last straw for me. Cancelled and done. I have no interest funding the development of games I'll never play.
I've heard the argument that the success of their new games will benefit us directly, but I call BS on that given that the subscription fees from EVE obviously mostly goes to funding other games. There is no reason to trust that the future will change that. Once those games are released, not only will they have to split their attention over operating more games, but they will just find another set of new games to spend the money on.
I couldn't believe how poorly done Planetary Interaction was when it came out, and I just took another look at it a few days ago. I guess it makes sense now that they only wanted it as a tie-in for DUST. If PI was a game on its own, it wouldn't even be considered good enough for an iPhone game. There's so much potential there, as with so many other gameplay elements, but if they're just spending their time and money on new shiny projects that have nothing to do with EVE we will never see that potential realized.
I'm sure I'll be back if they get their act together in the future, but all this left too bad of a taste in my mouth to stay right now. |

Why? CCP has been advertising for game programmers for a long time now. It is pretty obvious that they have significant turnover. It is extremely obvious that they have very lax coding standards. Frankly every thing I've read in these reviews so far makes perfect sense with respect to problems and issues I've experienced with Eve and my personal past experience with similar situations as a professional software developer.

But that's how CCP started up, you fool. CCP ran nice and steady for years with a relatively small, close-knit, like minded team of people who were in it not just for money but to make a quality product.
What is it with these people going 'yeah well businesses have to make money somehow'. We know companies have to make money to survive but a balance between money, quality control and consumer loyalty has to be struck. CCP is now monstroussly inbalanced.
The result is a giant with fragile feet, ready to collapse at the first non trivial issue.
CCP is this.
Precisely. This is the difference between entrepreneurs and corporate managers. Entrepreneurs must have a hands-on approach where everything goes through them and their vision is the only one that matters. But when a company has outgrown the entrepreneur and that person(s) cannot make the shift into mid-size company mode then a collapse is a distinct possibility.

Bumping for truth. This is just amazing.
I've more and more seen CCP as unprofessional, but to hear it from their own employees? My view of CCP in the last few months (and mostly the last two days) has gone from Positive, to mildly displeased, to very dissapointed.
They've lost my respect and my trust, as well as my business. I don't mean to insult anyone at CCP, but they just seem... incompetent...
Everything they've done recently has reminded me of those adages your mother tells you for years. Specifically, when you don't listen.
"Trust and respect take years to earn and moments to lose, and longer to get back" "Hard work and direction equal success" "You get out what you put in" "Always listen to others"
I remember me mum telling me this when I was 5, and I can only feel embarrassed when I feel CCP needs to hear them.

Reading this, it explains quite a lot.
I'm seeing a trend with the employees' gripes: lack of communication, no documentation, iron curtain between the senior management and everyone else, etc. To me, that explains things like the great forum ****-up, and things like the quite predictable "patch day is here, set a LONG skill." The above-average occurances of "we've fixed this, but broke that. Oops." Seriously, documentation is voluntary??? Have any of the policy makers ever worked at a real company before?
How do you expect anything even remotely technical (like, oh... a computer program) to work well if it's managed this way?
I love EVE... I always laugh at the "EVE IS DYING" posts, I shrugged off the T20 scandal for the most part, but ****... things are looking a little bleak to me here. The whole micro-transactions thing has me seriously questioning the future here, and mostly for the simple fact that no one from CCP has come out and said "No, no, no... it's going to be vanity only! Don't worry, we'll never offer things that affect gameplay!" Not that I'd have much faith in that proclomation, since not too long ago they were saying "No, no, no, we'll NEVER go the microtranaction route!"
I'd be really saddened to see Eve go the way of the dodo, but it'd be extra sad to see it go down because of misguided greed. (i.e. charging $80 for a monocle... really? Offer it for $2 and watch the dough roll in. Those 52 you've sold for the incredible price point? Imagine how many you'd sell if you made it more available to the greater playerbase.) I won't buy any of that crap regardless, but there are tons of people who will.
I guess my whole point is that I've got near zero faith in the management's ability to make good business decisions, at this point. And that can't fare well for EVE. You seriously look inept! And you are doing nothing to prove otherwise. Is this just some incredibly well-done propoganda by the "bittervets" which have me feeling this way? Perhaps, but CCP is failing so far at swinging people like me, (the silent majority who never frequent the forums, but rather just enjoy the game,) the other way.
Game-altering microtransactions (i.e. pay-to-win) WILL see an end to my three accounts, but I'm still holding out until that point. The complete failure of CCP to re-assure me is not helping. I'm not sure HOW they could reassure me, either, which is even more disconcerting.
U sad? I sad.

Edited by: Laruen Pleides on 26/06/2011 17:38:18 The key word found in one of the reviews spells it all out quite clearly "investors".
Investors only care about one thing: their money.
They want a return on the money they give to a company. And they want it regardless of what happens to the company.
Also, does anyone here honestly believe that the top management at CCP isn't already set for life when it comes to cash? Even if they got "fired" they'd get a severance package that is probably triple what most of us make in a year. They have no "skin in the game". They have no reason to care at all about Eve, and they will simply do whatever the investors want. In the long run that is the saddest thing of it all. If CCP really does "crash and burn", the only people who will be hurt for it are the underpaid employees that most of us probably would have no argument with if we knew their opinions. The folks who deserve most to be on the street, will be living on lobster and filet mignon for the rest of their lives.

"Cons -Huge disconnect between customer service and development in CA. The higher ups are always stunned to hear how angry or disgruntled the CS department employees are. This is due to the fact that CS management does not honestly tell them how bad things are, they hide it and you suffer for it. -No chance for growth unless you started when the Austin branch opened. It's very buddy buddy so you will see certain individuals gain promotion after promotion while you sit there stagnant even after doing everyhting asked of you and more. -The pay is still a joke after several company wide raises. Similair jobs in Austin pay almost twice the amount. The company things simply by working for Blizzard you will want to stay because they make good games. -Constant delays on promotions due to inept planning. You will be strung along for months hoping to get a promotion you deserved a year ago. -No feasable way to move to the development side of the company unless you get experience in another company. -90% of the managers are inept. They may have been great Game Masters but they are terrible leaders and are only out for themselves. No accountability at all for management. They will still be there till the end of time because once you get that management job, the only way to lose that position is through another promotion."
