A few weeks ago someone posted about some problem and I mentioned I helped new players once in a while in 1.0 new player systems. A bunch of people chimed back in that they too helped new players as well. So I decided to start a poll thread. The question:
DO YOU HELP NEW PLAYERS ON A REGULAR BASIS?
By "regular basis" I mean sitting in the help channel or parking your big Battleship outside some newbie station (where they all go "ohh awww" at it) and helping out or maybe something else you do.
We've all seen the newbies mining in their Impariors and Reapers and we all remember what it was like. Not everyone was a beta tester but everyone with over a month or so has at least SOME experience to share.
I for one try to put in a couple hours a week or so in the Amarr newbie systems just answering questions. I'll fly in, announce in local I'm "here to answer questions", and do my best. It's amazing how after a couple "reluctant" people ask others will suddenly join in. It reminds me of the Junior High dance where no one wants to be the first on the floor... then someone goes out and then everyone starts dancing. The newbies seem to enjoy it and sometimes I give away Tormenters with Miner I's (which they think are super cool ).
So if you help the newbies too post what you do here. Share your ideas for being a "good guy". Even the evil pirates can help newbies (like Stavros who was always in help channel). What can we all do to ensure these new players stick with the game and feel welcome? After all they're part of the future of Eve and its to our benefit to see they have a good time.

There's a corp dedicated to helping newbies: Eve-university. They do a good job explaining the game to newbies. Caldari space though.

I dont as much as I used to, not really room to keep noob help channal open all the time and all the flashing and talking when im doing other stuff, 99% of the time i just cant keep up with it.
But whenever im in those empire and especially 1.0 systems or recruit chat or whatever i tend to help ppl and if i find a noob particularly funny or cool or whatever, i usually send em a few mil to help em out.
Something i never got as back when i was a noob, not really anyone had a few mil to spare ---------------

I applaud your efforts, Bishop, despite our 'In Character' differences.
Unfortunately I only know of one 'newbie' system, Ammold. They're not listed conveniently by race/clan.
EVE is seriously balanced against newbs... either it's the tediously slow process of mining for their first shiny new Probe/Slasher (or whatever frig), then mining some more for weapons... Or it's the laughing gank squad sitting in 0.4 just hoping to nail a week old char on their first exploring trip.
I would not mind lending a hand to newbs when I come across them. Most are grateful for the help (I know I was).
Cheers.

I allways help new players. When I see silly questions asked on local I awnser them. After killing fairly new players I take the time to advise the victims in how to avoid dying in the future.

I help new PIE recruits settle in. Does that count?
Seriously though, I help as many new players as possible. New players really bring a fresh perspective and impotus to the game. I love em!

Just a short note after reading this:
Thanks to all of those who help us newbies. I started playing Eve the other day and since that time if I've ever had a question, or needed to find something, or anything of that sort. I just ask in the State War Academy (newbie Corps.) channel. With in a few moments someone told me what I needed to know, and they were nice about it as well.
In my time playing MMO* games, spanning 7 or so years now, this is BY FAR the newbie friendliest game I've encountered. I think I'm going to be sticking around for awhile :-D
Thanks for the help. In a few months time I'm quite sure I'll be returning the favor for some other new person.

I played two beta releases recently. WoW and Face of Mankind. Both games have less depth than Eve but getting help was difficult and many times I just gave up asking. I think Eve just has a more mature player base.

Here is a list of new player starter areas (region name first then the system name). I know they aren't exactly "advertised" anywhere. If your in one of these systems be aware there are probably alot of inexperienced players around who could use an answer or two. Keep an eye on local chat for their questions.
AMARR Domain, Chaven Kor-Azor, Sehmy Tash-Murkon, Emrayur
MINMATAR Heimatar, Ammold Heimatar, Hulm, Metropolis, Ryddinjorn
CALDARI The Forge, Kisogo Lonetrek, Amsen Lonetrek, Togaki
GALLANTE Essence, Duripant Sinq Laison, Bourynes Verge Vendor, Cistuvaert

Well a week ago I sat 2-3 hours in a belt helping out newbies mining in my large miningbarge... No charge... and another time later this week I was helping out a friend and helped hauling for the newbies out there and refined the ore for them ... also for free.
I regular get questions from new people about the game and I try to my best and help them out getting isk and how to get more selfsufficient...

Well, I created this character to join a corp a friend of mine had started, after having played for 3 months, but I enjoyed being in the Republic Military School so much that I didn't want to leave for a week :)

Edited by: Falbala on 20/02/2005 16:16:10 I recruit exclusively newbies in my corp and kick them out when they have their cruiser^^. No, they can stay but seriously I have no plans for more experienced players.
I don't give them too much money but sometimes I go mining with them, so they make good cash, they have access to the common modules, the ammos and to the drones hangars, sometimes there are frigates for them to use. They have view access to the skills and named modules hangar so they they can ask if they wish.
If they want to build I give them factory access with a few BPCs but they need to provide their own minerals.
It is not a hassle for me at all, most of them are very nice and a few make a lot of money very fast it is amazing^^.
Actually I am not recruiting since I come back after a few monthes break so I need to reorganize the corp a bit before.

When i used to gate camp in empire id log my alt into noob corp and recruit a few to scout for me and pick up my loot. I couldnt trust that to an experienced player as they know how much the stuff is worth

Also, you ever see that when you give a noob isk out of the blue it takes them a few days to realise they have extra isk and ofcourse to figure out how to use the eve-mail option

I guess I could say I help new players on regular basis. I've been a member of EVE University for eleven months (oldest member apart from Morning Maniac our CEO) so I'm always on corp chat and and our public channel eve university. I don't really do much except answer those question that I can.
I don't really see helping newbies as giving them huge amount of isk's. If you feel compelled to give them isk take them out mining, help them in a dungeon or whatever just make them work a little for it. They would still make lots more than they would on their own but they would have earned it. I think in the long run.
The eve community is actually remarkably mature. The forums might give the wrong idea about it though and I bet that if you would only interact with the people playing the game you would think it's a rather hostile newbie bashing world. Fact of the matter is that most of the people that I meet in game are rather friendly and helpful. __________ Capacitor research |

Most of the time the help channel is a joke when ISD/Polaris aren't around. It's used by the same people to use as a chat channel and show no respect whatsoever as to why that channel is there.
Also you start getting some idiots giving out really wrong and BAD advice and n00bs don't even know it.
It's about time ISD/Polaris started to permanently ban these people from the channel and it can be used as it was meant to without having to fight around the idiots. ___________________________________________ http://www.eve-tutor.com

I sit in the help channel a lot, answering Qs and it stops me from going insane on long mining ops ( 3 hours sitting in belt )
What tends to happen is when thers no help requests the helpees tend to start chatting.
I used to give 200k to any char under a week old and still in starter corp, tho i havent been doing that so much lately.
Maby ill sit outside a station and offer to helpthem mine.

I make a habit to get on the help channel once a week, and when i pass through Emrayer (I know, the spelling is way off) I'll take my mining dominix and fly threw the belts looking for noob ships and wow them with all my drones and help them mine scord and answer their questions. I do that about one a week as well. Its actually a good recruiting tactic

Personally I help but not regularly, so I guess my answer would be no. I tend not to help too much in-game unless I'm not very busy, but if I see a question being asked here or on eve-i and I can offer a useful reply, I usually will.

i'm one of those ebil pirates. I don't talk in the help channel or anything, but i do give advice on the forums and make a large effort to talk to people 1 on 1, which i find more effective. Usally it's the people i just ransomed, discussing how i got them and what to do next time... ____________________________ Waiting to cut out the deadwood. Waiting to clean up the city.
