So what is it about this new destroyer that makes it anything more than a glorified Caracal?

It uses missiles? Honestly, no idea as this is the first I've heard of it, but it wouldn't surprise me too much if it was 4 missile sporting Destroyers we got. Sort of hoping not, but it might be better than the initial impression that gives.

Maybe they're replacement models for the current Destroyers?

Either way, I hope they have some sort of transitional role beyond guns to missiles. A longer range Missile Destroyer might be nice, but I can only see that happening with them also having lower maneuverability and reduced speed when compared to standard Destroyers, along with a better stationary tank and buffer.

Caldari needs to fire their ship designers. This whole asymmetric thing is grating my nerves. Please CCP, stop making asymmetric ships, they look hideous.

You can view them (and any other unpublished items present in the game) by TypeID using standard IGB javascript methods.
Gogela site is good example how this is implemented.
TypeID's and current temporary names:

Gallente DST TiII 32872

Useful only to see actual looks because there is no actual ship stats, names or descriptions yet.

Meaning that the Amarr destroyer is viewable? Does it really look like a Star Destroyer?

I'm pretty sure it's just a stub model.
