I've been in EVE since 2006 with relatively few breaks. I've tried just about everything out there once or twice, but at no point have I ever managed to accumulate much more than a billion isk at once. Where are all the new billionares (trillionaries?) coming from these days? Back in my early days it seemed the immensely wealthy were the alliance barons and t2 bpo holders with a monopolized market. Now i'm seeing lots of up-start traders claiming to have more isk than many of the dusty vets have accrued over years.
I know that every great fortune is at least in some-part a secret, i'm not looking for a walk-through or guide. I'm simply curious to know the general path that some of the mega-wealthy EVE'ers took. My ultimate goal is to begin a small compilation of rags-to-riches stories (with a little creative fiction) for a website i've got in the works.
So if you are or if you're aware of someone with such an experience, post a bit about it here or evemail me if you would like to remain anonymous. I look forward to hearing what you have to say.

Edited by: Roguehalo on 27/06/2011 20:20:39 The fastest way for an 'unconnected' player in Eve to make oodles of isk is to trade/run missions in tandem.
Do some research on that and you're away.
Edit : I didn't read the op properly. I thought it was yet another "How do I make lots of isk" thread

The general path? Find something that makes money and you either enjoy or not hate doing and do it until you are satisfied with the amount of money you got!
Depending on how things go after the summit I may launch a blog to go over this in more detail, or just release my thoughts as a PDF. Been thinking about that for a bit.
But I'll say that trading is good if you want to do something hands on, or agents/pi for passive, or.. really it doesnt matter as long as you enjoy it and are good at it.
I know of people that make isk pvp'ing ;D

i made 3 bil the week PI came out, simply read patch notes, tried test server, saw that certain items are much higher in the PI chain then others, then i invested 300mil or so in PI materials, patch day i sold them all during the speculation and made profits.

Ah!
There's lots of ways of making that interesting. Talk about the trader moving tractor beams from Jita to Ichoriya in his rusty ibis, fitting them on because they wont fit in the cargo hold some time and uptrading ships as he goes or some such.
The story of a trader could be very interesting if only because it involves movement and varied locales and has plenty of opportunities for exposition.
The research angle might be interesting too. I'd leave PI for more interesting times unless it involves a wormhole.

Not so much concerned with how to make it interesting, i've been a creative writer for a long time. The point of this thread was to find some players with a story worth telling.

I'm at about 1.8 billion, mostly as a solo trader. Would be richer but I fund my account by PLEX. Got started as a miner, made a useful amount of money but it got boring and you can't get rich as a solo miner. I had trained Industrials to help mine, so I started trading. NPC goods at first, which did more harm than good because the good prices were in low-sec and I got murdered a lot. Then PI. I spent some time flying a spreadsheet to calculate opportunities to convert lower-tier PI goods to higher, and resell for profit. That got me a nice nest egg. I maxed out Accounting and Broker Relations to get trade costs down, and now I'm mostly a classical buy-low / sell-high trader, based in Jita with alts overseeing a few large orders at Rens and Dodixie. I still move a lot of PI goods because I have tools to help me track their value, but anything that trades in high volume is good.
Never been in a Corp, and blocking spammers is as close as I get to PvP.

I made my first billion running missions, my second billion in the BIG lottery, and then got into T2 cruiser invention. Not the most raw profit as invention schemes go, but I had a bunch of T1 cruiser BPOs when I started, and then I got all the spreadsheets built the way I liked them, so I just kept on with it. Probably made 25-30B over 2 years on two accounts from the invention, plus a few more random billions on assorted prizes/gambling/short-term trading schemes.
Oddly, the two massive profit opportunities of our time(technetium spike and cyno jammers -> POSes) I basically skipped out on entirely - I misread Akita T's thread, thought he was talking about thulium, and laughed it off, and I figured CCP was going to drop a hammer on anyone doing the jammer trick somehow(though I did make half a bil or so buying up every Capital Construction Parts BPC in empire and selling the parts at a gigantic markup).

The best legitimate ways that I have seen, that don't involve mission/trading grind always tend to be found with gaps or mistakes in the game. Examples:
1. Armor plate salvage wasn't used for any items in the game originally, and a few players realised that it would be addressed. Made a fortune
2. Removal of civilian modules. Again stockpiled and huge profit.
3. New ships at patches. Orca made more money refining for parts off those that built them
4. PI. CCP mistakes allowed massive refining of products, and stockpiling others for huge profit
5. Ship Insurance. Infamous Insurance Exchange rate

I don't know if I'm considered wealthy or not, I have 6.5 billion in liquid ISK - with another 1-2 billion in assets that could be sold in about a months time. I started as a low-sec mission runner. I befriended a local defense group that lived in a small pocket of low-sec space where there were 3 L4 Q20 agents for my faction of choice. In exchange for helping defend the constellation every once in a while, I was left alone most of the time to mission in that system. I made my first billion doing this. After that, I spent all that money on my PvP main, leaving about 200 million.
From there I took the 200 million and began buying low and selling high. I started around December, so I guess when put that way I make about a billion ISK a month (accounting for the occasional whelp of my mains PvP ships and also the occasional goodwill I perform) I could probably make a ton more, but I limit myself to working with only 1 billion ISK at any given time, the rest I just save so I can comfortably PvP on my main.

Best way to get rich in Eve is surf CCP mistakes.
i.e. buying up PI seeds before they get nerfed and become 100x more valuable.
Occasionally CCP would throw a curve-ball to catch out the big speculators.
Just one of the reasons they wanted to clear out everyone in a few months.

I sit on some nice bullions after almost a year of casual (2 updates/month) of trading. I update everything twice a month. I make 1-2 billions a month. You do the math.
Easy cash, very easy, If I knew this when I started I would have a personal Titan now.
How to do it? Reinvest and don't spend on stupid stuff. I keep my spending in check and I try to use my free time to build ships, I don't know why but I like to fly ships I build better than the ones I buy.
So when I PvP I usually use my own ships, which saves ISK. Basically I trade so I can finance my PvP. I can lose about 50 mil/day in PvP and not care if I can't be bothered to make my ships.
Also if you plan to fly capitals, a carrier and dread, just to set u up with those 2 ships you need 3 billions for skills and ships, so you see, to make that kind of money by missioning would mean to play 6 hours/day every day. I can go on a nice vacation and then have the money in my wallet when I come back, all thanks to trade.
===
Or build a corporation. Once you get 20-40 people that do missions and you also do corp ops to generate revenue, well you are in for some nice ISK. A bit of work though... but good ISK and fun.

I made my first fortune as a galactic scrap dealer.
I would place region wide buy orders for Hydrogen batteries in Sinq Liason. My suppliers were mostly mission runners who would obtain them as mission loot and bonus items from agents.
The bulk of stock would appear in a few stations, it was classic long tail. At first I would collect these up and Haul them to Hek in my Iteron in a short period of time I was able to trade up ultimatly to a Mk5, and then expand my cargo capacity to the then hugely expensive local Hull expanders at a cost of 30 Million a piece. This was before T2 became mainstream.
Over time my wealth grew and I would start to accumulate Hydrogen batteries faster I could move them. So I would start to sell job lots of Batteries directly from the places they accumulated fastest, eventually my region wide orders were replaces with buys in specific stations which offered the best supplies.
I expanded into other regions, first Essence, other goods like small arms.
Gradually I spent more time trading and spent less time hauling. I had made my first Billion ISK and become a Market Maker, followed softly after by Billion ISK wallet balance. Afterwards Freighters were introduced I bought my corp a Fenrir which is still owned and probably one of the first and oldest in Fenrir in the game, strangely I never trained to fly it, my interest is the Sciences had started to grip me, but that is a story for another day.

Immortalize me in your scribblings friend, here is how I did it.
I am a solo type player, while I always keep a low ISK profile I have a large wealth of acquired assets which I sell off when I need ISK of anything. Originally started out trading Vitoc long ago. I started fill Vitoc orders across three regions, until the corporation join an alliance. At the time I had several hundred million ISK, and the small tight knit group of friend I started with still barely had 50million. Once in 0.0 space we ratted in groups did alliance stuff etc. However, I took our ratting ISK and invested just under 100mil in an IPO called Zero.
I got in on the ground floor, and when Zero. stock was good, I started trading it on EVE Galactic Stock Exchange, slowly collecting vast amounts stock from people wanting this popular stock at the time. At it's peak price, I was then part of a different alliance which had the CEO of Zero. in it. I was farming moon goo, but trading stock was much more profitable. Using the alliance message board I got a feeling Zero. wasn't going to perform well shortly, so I sold out all my stocks for around 7,500 ISK each (Originally 1,000 ISK each) Making me a fortune just shy of 2 billion ISK.
With that ISK I invested into ISSO and due to uncertain outcome of the stock, it started to drop in price, people where liquidating their stocks believing it would scam. However again, my alliance connection held true once again, with a gut feeling based on information gathered I started purchasing ISSO stock from the two stock exchanges for way under value. Right around this FIN and EMFI where also popular stocks which only held a few hundred million in each. Once ISSO made good on it's repurchase I almost doubled up my investment ISK. I proceeded to purchase and trade EMFI stock which also suffered from the collapse of ISSO, Purchasing stock for about 3,000 ISK each and once Ray built up the stock over a year, I sold them for over 11,000 ISK each, again doubling up.
BSAC had started a Mineral Reserve (Not the one you know today) I invested heavily into that I was offered a seat on the Board of Directors, which I accepted. When that reserve closed I profited very well from it also. Shortly before that I did join EBANK as a director and saw a different side of EVE that I thought I knew. While I had made a nearly 20B ISK NAV before hand, I quickly understood the industry side of EVE better than ever before. While we did get paid I used my EBANK pay to simply pay subscription, I started running a personal munitions business in the new Black Rise, dealing with 700 transactions daily for months as I stayed on top giving the perception that Black Rise was not a good market for manufactures and traders. With EBANK consuming more of my time, and people finally catching on that Black Rise is a good lvl 4 Caldari Navy hub, I ended my personal business with the destruction of my production POS in that region.
I now explore space, and build my industry character up to do every industry thing possible. This character hardly never trains unless it's a new skill. I explore space in a Legion that uses Drones , can tank lvl 4 DED space and collecting all the goodies. Legion and implants come to nearly 1 Billion ISK dedicated to JUST high-sec exploration.
I am not mega wealthy, but I did it all alone, and without asking anyone for a single ISK. According to jEVEAssets my vast BPO inventory comes to just under 85B ISK (Despite forum believe I made a BILLIONS on PI), Assets across my characters come to over 10B ISK, but I have less then 2B ISK in wallets. I don't seek ISK out anymore, I enjoy the game in other ways, but I know countless ways to make a lot of ISK very quickly and have the means to make it happen, but the desire to have lots of wealth is gone.

i started playing the game 2.5 years ago. i was hardly active in the first 9 months only running some missions once in a while and training my character. i remember it was a considerable setback when i lost a mission raven. by the end of those 9 months my nav was 1b ISK.
then i increased my acticity. i started running sleeper sites and harvesting gas in unknown space. this allowed me to get more eve accounts and to buy characters. thus increasing the speed with which i was able to earn ISK. 9 months of farming unknown space increased my nav to 150b ISK.
one year ago i eventually became an industrialist. i started small but quickly invested the most part of my nav into resources and additional industry characters. today i have characters with more than 700m sp in total and my nav recently passed the 1trillion ISK milestone.

Started trading with something around the sum of 300mill ISK buying all sorts of Angel loots and moving that to Jita and selling for a profit of around 200% and sometimes even more. After a few weeks of doing this I`ve gotten to triple the starting ISK and then got into importing modules, ammo, drones to null sec.
During this starting time I`ve gotten a few hate mails from other traders, got my docking rights removed from several stations in Insmother by diplomats (lol HTA) that were trying to enforce a 10% markup over Jita.
Fast forward a few months I`ve become a multibillionare doing imports and exports and running a couple of production lines. Another year passed and the above sum pretty much tripled.
Haven`t done any market speculation on patch days and items because I can`t be bothered to think that much into the future. The only thing I regret is not buying POS fuels before the Tyrannis patch as I could have easily made ten times more.

One way is to by PLEX and then resell it in-game. The more PLEX you buy at once, the more money you'll make in the long run selling it. For instance 1 PLEX = 20USD, buy 2 PLEX at once and it equals to around 17.50USD, the more you buy the cheaper they become. Then turn around and sell the PLEX in-game for around 370,000,000 ISK. That's how I've made a nice nest egg for myself. I got all set with the ships I wanted for mission running, as well as a small collection that I'll never take out in much in PVE, let alone PVP.
I used to do the share thing back when I played a few years back, now I see there's a dedicated stock exchange, which I need to check out. You used to do that stuff right on this forum.
Back before PLEX it was much harder to make ISK, unless you sat in low sec and PVP'd with your Corp mates. I remember when I'd by a Vigilant (my favorite ship of all time) for around 125,000,000, now they go for over 250,000,000!

Well I have done something similar to what Celtru did. The only difference is I had a particular goal in mind. Buy PLEX buy whatever you are comfortable spending RL currency on. Take them sell them for top isk (i sold them recently at about peak and for 408mil each) then buy up a few more for a bit less. My main goal was to never have to pay for a subscription again and for the last three months I have been able to extend my play time on three different chars just off of buying (in the eve market, the only ones i paid cash for were the initial 4) and selling PLEX. Another great thing i have found to ensure some profit no matter what is be patient and never pay market price for anything. Make sure that everything you buy can either be used by you for cheap or resold for a profit, I have never sold something for less than 2% above what I paid.
I was a little off topic because my legacy is still being developed but one day I will be EVE and you all will bow to me and my Economic might! probably not but it makes me feel good to think of it.

Yes, the two posters above who purchased their space bucks sounds like a AWESOME fiction story..
"So tell me Celtru, you're able to afford anything you want in New Eden, it's clear you have untold billions of Inter Stellar Kredit in secret accounts all over the universe. How did you accumulate so much so quickly?"
"Well Bozwollox, I have this connection to a parallel universe in which I'm able to spend what is known as Dollars in their universe and though a special shop I'm able to get Concord Pilot license renewal certificates, I simply sell them.."
"O...k.... So tell me how you get these so called Dollars?"
"Oh see, I don't actually live in New Eden, I actually live in the parallel universe, I have a job there which is based around customer appetite satisfaction."
"Oh that sounds interesting, tell me more about your parallel existence..."
"Well, I'll try to put in terms you'll understand, there are shops which people go into and order food, I'm one of the people that prepares the food and places their food in paper bags, for them to consume."
"Yeah... ok... Thank you for your time and story, I really have to go now.."
------------------
"So tell me CtrlAltKill, you're able to afford anything you want in New Eden, it's clear you have untold billions of Inter Stellar Kredit in secret accounts all over the universe no doubt as you even refuse to identify yourself even in this private setting. How did you accumulate so much so quickly?"
"Bozwollox, if I told you, you'd look at me strange.."
"It can't be any stranger than the last guy I interviewed, he claimed to have been from a parallel universe and cook food for people, and put it in paper bags.."
"There IS ANOTHER ONE?!?!!" ---

cool idea and its quiet interesting reading how people made there money. my money really came from a 40 mil divided payout from one of the first corps I joined was a massive bit of money to me at the time so I wanted to find a way to invest it. so I set up a few regional buy orders for items in the area I was in within a week i'd turned it into over a 100 mil and expanded from there.
now i've got about 4 billion cash, 3 billion in stock to be sold on my trading char, full set of cap compenent BPOs for an ORCA and an ORCA BPO which are in 24/7 production. |
