So everyone saying CCP needs money, CCP is close to bankrupcy etc etc.... then here my recipe to solve all problems:
make 4 currencies, and delete Aurum (and isk too).
4 currencies= one currency for every faction. CCP will gain money from transactions, exchange rates fee beetweens different currencies, like actually banks do. This will be even more realistic in the game mechanic.
Example, your a minni pilot, flying in Gallente space, you got only minni money in your wallet, you need to pass in the Exchange Office in a station, exchange some of your money for gallente, pay the rate exchange fee % to the Office (little cash for CCP, but multiply it for zillions of ops), it may be different according to player standings, and your done. Your wallet will show the 4 currencies in 4 different color like now happening for the 2 ones (isks and aurum).
This will add a lot of realism and will cash realistically flow in poor CCPs wallet and everyone woulda be content. Plus, ISK and AURUM are not really sounding cool, indeed you need to fitter better currency name, CCP, at last more roleplayable and about the game style... Removing aurum then, will make the Noble Store part of game controled by players. CCP should claim the incomes from the items, but should sell the BPCs/BPO at very expensive price. SO every one will be content, the market will not be broken, the industrialists (the tycoons one or whoever willbe able to purchase those BPCs, will find more reasons to enjoy the game).
PS.: a lil note of funny: pirates faction could use the currency linked to their race OR trading item for item only (thats realistic too)

Why would the Amarrian Empire bother to exchange Minmatari money?
The reason ISK works, is due to the Concord Agreements, much like war decs.
4 Currencies? =/ One is hard enough.

Edited by: Naloth on 28/06/2011 11:20:27 I view ISK like gold. Doesn't matter where I am in the world, but if I plop down a sack of gold, I'm probably going to get what I want. Plus have you ever played games with multiple currencies? There's only so much realism before things get annoying.
And this may just be me not completely understanding what you mean, but how would giving CCP ingame cash make them money? Unless they're supposed to turn around and buy all the PLEX off the market with it?

This.
In game currency != real life currency.
Unless I missed something too. ---------- I plan to live forever. So far so good. |

Interesting idea on game mechanics, but i fail to see how it will provide ccp any extra real money since they only get paid by subs and micro-transactions involving plex and/or aur unless you mean the exchange fee is real money billed on top of you sub.

Edited by: Vincentus on 28/06/2011 11:30:20 Edited by: Vincentus on 28/06/2011 11:29:44 I was about to post that this is unpractical and make the sandbox a lot harder, like how much is a raven or whatever worth in Caldzri as opposed to Amarr space, but come to think of it it might actually make for more interesting trading...Hm going to think about it, it might actually be a pretty awesome isk sink...
edit: and less isk means higher prices for plex which means more people exchanging money for plex which means more money for CCP

That's not a solution. It's a can of worms and bloat.
a) It's not convenient for customers to do currency conversions
b) Getting rid of the one-currency simplicity opens up a whole new development complexity which has to be taken care of. Money for nothing.

If the price for exchanging currencies is high enough that people need to buy more PLEX because of it, it ceases being realistic and goes back to ridiculous and cash grabbing. Like the current NEX prices. Oh hey, full circle, fun.

Which goes back to the problem of people not wanting to pay extra money for a game we already pay to play.

yeah it may be a isk sinks and make CCP money in a more polite way comparing to the actual CCP Noble Store politics.
imagine this situation: you are a Minmatar toon, and you are flying in Amarr space. The exchange rate here could be like 1 Amarr curreny = 0,50 Minni currency. This may still change slightly depending on your personal standings with Amarr empire.
Now your wallet is empty of Amarr currency so you need to exchange some of your minni currency for amarr currency. You click on the Exchange Office and convert some of your minni currency to AMarr currency. PLUS you pay a fee to the Exchange Office for the operation.
Even if you exchange 100.000 minni $ to 50.000 amarr $ you could still have a good deal as the good you wanna buy got still a good price comparing the price you woulda pay in Minmatar space...
so:
100.000 minni = 50.000 amarr - exchange fee 1% 5,00 = Total 49,500 amarr currency in your wallet (plus the remants in minni you still have eventually in your wallet)
