Hi all,
Coming back to the game after a few years off -- so much has changed! As I'm getting skilled up again, can anyone recommend their top picks in terms of Race Ships (Battlecruisers and Battleships) for PVP? I've heard anecdotes from people that Caldari aren't preferred because missiles are slow and can be killed and that Gallente or Minmatar are better due to effectiveness of hybrids and projectiles. Not clear on Amarr.
Thanks in advance!

Edited by: Rumple Fourskin on 28/06/2011 18:06:30 drake = good buffer tank, 1 free mid for whatever ok damage if skilled and 3 bcu.
cane= good nano shield dps fit or good armor buffer dps fit
harbinger = cool shield dps fit, armor buffer fit as well not as common of a ship in general.
myrmidon = active armor tanker with autocannons and drones
all fearful if skilled properly

Minmitar Cyclone - It's bonuses suggest that this ship is a born mission runner, but don't be fooled. Coupled with a Crystal Implant set, some blue booster pills, and a slew of cap boosters this ship can become a miniature Malestorm, absorbing damage the way a fat kid absorbs insults (and hitting back with similar force). Even in a simple passive/buffer layout, it is not one to take lightly and is often underestimated.
Hurricane - Considered one of the best in its class. The Hurricane can be fitted a number of ways (the two most popular ones being the "armor-brawler" and the "nano-shield") which makes it a very unpredictable ship. It also possesses high agility and speed making it a VERY mobile ship (almost as mobile as some cruisers).
Caldari Ferox - Oh the Ferox... as ugly on the inside as it looks on the outside. The Ferox get bonuses for shields, but alas it cannot tank as well as it's younger and more popular brother. It also has trouble dealing damage at range... but that is not the fault of the Ferox. The fault lies with those infernal contraptions called Hybrids. Today, Ferox uses duct tape to strap on autocannons. It figures that it cannot get any uglier and that even un-bonused weapons are an improvement.
Drake - What is the Drake? It's a brick. As simple as that. It's passive tank laughs at anyone in a 1v1 encounter and its raw HP buffer is sufficient to make any FC call ANYTHING else primary before it. The Drake does have a dark secret though; in exchange for its tanking power it gave up a chunk of its DPS. But the Drake is okay with this. As long as its tank remains the same 0.0 fleets will use it en mass... which it will rub in Ferox's face later at the company retreat.
Amarr Prophecy - No heathen may penetrate the Prophecy! It is sturdy as it is sound. Alas, it possesses little power and speed to properly strike down those who would tangle with it... but fear not!! For this is the Prophecy's tireless and traditional duty; to sit, wait, and ensnare any who venture too close. Once intertwined with the Prophecy, others may come and finish the job that it began. LONG LIVE THE PROPHECY!!
Harbinger - Nothing can scorch the heavens quite as well as the Harbinger. The bringer of DOOM to any facing it down, it can be fit a few ways... one fit that sacrifices staying power for range and extreme "cleansing power" that would make any templar proud... another fit that balances tank, speed, and damage to bulldoze the opposition and live to see another day.
Gallente Brutix - it tries to be all manly... it really does. And if range wasn't an issue it would be one of the most testosterone filled ships around. Alas, range does matter and the Brutix falls short. This is only exacerbated by the fact that Brutix is also quite chubby and it can't run for too long before it drains itself to nothing. The Hurricane offered to give Brutix lessons in shield tanking and ganking, however Brutix just could keep up. Brutix has much in common with Ferox, however Brutix and Ferox aren't really talking to each other right now because they found out they were using the same weapons (Hybrids). These days, Brutix only dresses in black and has a nasty habit of running right into the thick of things screaming, "I don't care anymore." People have learned to keep their distance.
Myrmidon - People originally laughed at her style. Mocked her for her aimless, almost whorish ways. Today, she is revered and looked upon fondly. Her spacious drone bay allows her to pop out one drone after the other, sending them to prick and stab her foes. Her indecision on what weapon to use has led her to be very flexible when faced with hard choices. She isn't very picky after all. And her tanking styles of choice are reminiscent of of what Cyclone, Drake, and Prophecy can do. Now if only she could remember which one gave her that rash. _______________________

A ship is classically referred to as a she, so it makes sense to me.

Drake: Well, it's a Drake. You'll have long range and the tank of a BS, and its DPS is "meh". It's also pretty slow and not very versatile. Use mids for webs, TPs and whatnot and do not overtank - as long as there are other ships on the field, you'll never be primary. Ferox: I fit rainbow lasers on mine for the sake of trolling.
Hurricane: Extremely versatile, both in fitting and how you can fly it. While "versatile" often means sub-par in that the ship does a lot of things ok, but never shines in one area - this is not the case with the 'cane. Canes will be primary quite fast, but one of the many advantages is that with most fittings, you'll generally be able to gtfo when you're close to death. Cyclone: Have never flown such a thing.
Harbinger: Perhaps one of the most underrated BCs in the game imho. No one is exactly saying it's bad, but it always gets mentioned behind the 'cane, Drake, etc. However, do take into consideration that a ganky shield Harbinger can lash out 750+ DPS with its lasers and got an ok buffer to go along with it. Also works well with a armor buffer, which will give you a very potent ship. Take note, tho, fitting one of these with an armor buffer means you commit when you go into a fight, as escape is not an option. Prophecy: Bait.
Myrm: Don't really have anything to add. Brutix: A nice, fun throwaway BC. If you get your target in range and strapped down, expect him to melt fast - and expect the same for the Brutix, as you'll be primary.

Drake: The Drake is the potato salad of the EVE Online world - bland, boring and unimaginative, but the thing is it's almost impossible to screw it up. As long as a fitting at least sounds half-sensible, it probably is. Blobbing fifty Drakes with a handful of Basilisks and Falcons for support is perhaps the most boring way to win a fight in the whole of EVE Online, but damn it all, it works. Never underestimate the power of EHP buffer blobs.
Myrmidon: If the Drake is potato salad, the Myrmidon is lasagna - putting it together can go hilariously wrong if you don't know what you're doing, but if you get it right, the results are delicious - and there are a lot of different things you can toss in that will still work. The Myrmidon is probably one of the most versatile battlecruisers because it doesn't lose anything from fitting your prefered type of turret - there are no turret bonuses anyway. It can be tanked a large number of ways and it performs well both in fleets and on its own. ----- Andreus Ixiris CEO, Mixed Metaphor

Drakes are basically the best all around battlecruisers. You should either be fitting them with 3 bcu or going 2 nano/2 bcu to get the most out of them. Drakes still have a reputation for bad DPS (from the 1 bcu idiots) but if you fit them properly they do extremely good damage considering the 75km range.
Hurricanes are one of the best solo or small gang ships in the game, since they have good dps, good speed, reasonable range and two free high slots for neuts.

Whoever bricks Drakes these days is dumb, and they really aren't that slow. Nano HM drakes are where it's at, but as mentioned, all tier 2 battlecruisers are pretty decent.
Pick the Drake for general utility, myrm/cyclone for fun, imho.

Drake is only bc that does ok in pve, so its not surprising alot of people without pvp experience use it as entry ship to pvp too. Second drake is wannabe gang booster for "solo" pvp. Even its not tengu/loki, it still makes BIG difference, especially 16,9k webs and 37k points. The guy that used it for "solo pvp" was in minmatar militia in that time btw.

No, he never was. At least not officially. He always followed around any fleet in the area and then picked up the scraps after any engagement. He made the mistake of doing this in front of my guys and I... so we went GCC to made our point (which is: if you were not part of the engagement, hands off the loot). _______________________

Prophecy - not bait, honest ;). Crap damage, massive tank, incredibly slow.
Harbinger - solid, dependable, good damage output and projection.
Drake - big tank, best damage projection at range.
Ferox - neat autocannon/blaster platform, don't ever use rails with it (or at all)
Brutix - best paper DPS but too slow to apply it properly due to :blasters:
Myrmidon - awesome. Triple repping Myrm is a solo death machine.
Cyclone - good all rounder, can make a wicked solo ship but to get the best out of the bonuses you'll want BC5, at which point just get a sleipnir.
Hurricane - situationally the best net damage output of them all...also fastest. Bestest ship in game :D

That's actually the ONE ship if someone wants to play ONE account in EVE and PvP scucesfully, if he too ups his minner skills and buy a BPO to keep replacing his ship if he wants to be totally self reliant. With a covetor it takes 3 days to mine all the matts for this ship while you relax doing other things. |
