Hello forum pilots,
I am using the ever popular cookie cutter Maelstrom build here:
http://eve.battleclinic.com/loadout/29238-AC-Maelstrom-L4-Baby-Varg-Dominion-Ready.html
My fit is really similar besides the tracking computer and 3rd resistance mod. I have a shield boost amp and large shield extender. I noticed that the meta 4 LSE I'm using is only 10% to my total shield. I'm wondering if I would get better use of that slot with the 3rd resistance mod. I thought the diminishing returns would make it mostly worthless. What mod can I squeeze in there to min/max this fit? I do not have a problem with tracking it seems.
On a note, I noticed such a huge difference coming from a passive tanked/ arty cane from level 3's. I just stepped up to L4's with this fit. I learned to hit frigs at 30k+ and am doing fine but a 3.5k optimal takes a lil more geting used to lol. Thanks for any input.

The linked fit is not the one you are using?
It sounds sort of like you are saying you are using an active tanking mod with a buffer tank mod. Amps go with Boosters not Extenders.

I was trying to say instead of the tracking computer and invul field i am using a LSE and shield boost amp. I have the X-Large booster. It is active tanked with the booster. Should I not mix the LSE with a booster fit then?

You can, but all it means is that you are doing both less effectively. Focus on active or buffer entirely. Even a second Amp is better than putting an Extender on an Active tank.

Shield extenders are a component of what's referred to as "buffer tanking" -- creating a large reservoir of hit points and hoping that your enemy will run out of hp before you do. This is generally preferred for PvP, where fights are short, brutal, and DPS is largely unpredictable.
Shield boosters are used for "active tanking" where you attempt to use capacitor to replenish hit points as they are lost. If you can't do this faster than the incoming damage, you generally blow up quickly (owing to the small hp buffer of active tanks). This is popular for PvE, because incoming DPS is generally well known and you have to fight for an extended period.
Generally, it's a bad idea to mix these tanking styles -- the shield extender on your active tank fit could be exchanged to improve your active tank further, which would render the hp buffer unnecessary as soon as the active tank exceeded the incoming DPS.
The only real exception to this rule is in PvP, where active tanks must be concerned about getting their smaller hp buffers exhausted in a single shot (A single, high damage volley is called an 'Alpha Strike.' Getting killed in one shot is called 'Being Alpha'd.') You'll sometimes see this on frigates that use nosferatu to run an active tank -- the buffer lets them get into range to run the nosferatu, while the active tank gives them sustainability until heavier ships get lock.
