Note: Please stay calm when reading this especially the old vets there is a pay of for you guys to further down in this post.
CCP are supposedly in financial trouble, there is also possibly a problem with the number of plex's in game from what IÆve read. CCP solution to increase profits and to create an additional plex sink from what I understand was to create CQ and the NEX store. The NEX store coupled with CQ being mandatory (disabling CQ is optional only for now) and with the release of leaked internal documents has caused an uproar and has led to mass protests and demonstrations in game and on the forums.
Anyway this is only a rough idea at the moment but im trying to think out of the box and brainstorm something different that would be acceptable to both the players and help CCP out by reducing the number of plex in game and increase revenue. Basically as an alternative to the current direction the game is going in with P2W model. What i propose is make the game much easier when initially starting out by giving all new players 10 million sp. That way CCP will have a better chance of retaining new players who find eve in the beginning to be far to hard because of a lack of being able to do anything and then giving up. Or players that leave after an initial period in the game as they have invested there skills in a profession they donÆt actually like. Which they thought sounded cool but in reality it wasn't something they really enjoyed after experiencing it and they donÆt want to start all over again (I known several noobs that have left because of this).
Note: 10 million SP is just a rough figure it could be more it could be less.
To accompany the 10 million SP CCP should create a PDF with a list of professions in game and suggest a partial training que for each profession just to give new players that little help they need when it comes to spending there SP. Additionally if CCP wants to be really noob friendly they could increase the training length of time and use certificates (right click add to training que) to help noobs actually start out easier.
Now you're probably asking yourself how does this relate to reducing the number of plex's in game and help generate more income for CCP. Firstly by helping the newer players out with 10 million sp it should go a long way in helping with getting new players to stick with the game (much more than WIS ever could imo). It could also possibly create a boom in alt accounts that can be funded via plex for a lot more players. As setting up an alt and running it via plex would be much easier than it currently is and much less of a grind. As at the moment it can literally cost billions if say you want to purchase a character from the bizarre and have a basic alt hulk miner on a separate account. That is if you want to avoid the grind.
Note: Veterans please keep calm by now I can just envisage that your rage is starting to peak and the veins are popping out of your neck and head and your pounding on your keyboard and ready to rip me a knew one.
As a way to of placating the existing player base everyone in game should be credited with 10 million sp. CCP should then also add a new wave of skills and ships to the game to keep the overall level of difficulty of the game the same. As in the new accelerated start new players get doesnÆt mean they're closer to the top if anything the endgame content should be further away with the new added skills.
Suggestions for additional skills/ships:-
T3 Frigs T3 Destroyers (possible anti drone Fighter bomber/fighter bonus) T3 Battlecruiser (possible slightly better command ship) T3 Battlecruiser logi ship T3 Black ops battleship (possible DPS ship to accompany EWAR based T2 black ops) T3 Black ops pocket carriers
Also as a way of balancing supers how about this for an idea.
Make drones immune to normal EWAR (fighter/fighter bombers only maybe) but give the new T3 Frigs and Destroyers bonuses to About these protest CCP

operate special modules (more skills) that will web target paint and nerf the resistance of drones. So in effect these new ships could be a counter to a supers drones which in turn could be a fairer way of nerfing the supers. Right anyway this is just a suggestion as an alternative to p2w that gives the players what we want and helps CCP out. Flame away if you want or you could be constructive and point out the flaws in this idea and suggest other alternatives. About these protest CCP

So basically what you are saying is that CCP should do all this in order to get people who are not really EVE material to join the game anyway because it will be dumbed down for them so that CCP can milk them for a few months and make some quick cash?
Well son, CCP is way ahead of you. The Nex is a far better way to make cash than your god awful idea. That is, it would have been a great way to make cash had the community not gone nuclear meltdown. Now the best way for CCP to make cash is to rob a bank. Although that falls short as well due to all the Icelandic banks being full of debt instead of actual money.
There is one last solution, and that is to sell the company to jewsish investors.

T3 is pretty superfluous already and you suggest adding more? Whole TL nonsense is just another ratrace that does not enhance the gameplay.
We certainly don`t need more powerful or better tanked logis.
T3 frigs = only useful when much better than T2 / faction. Mudflation. Same goes for T3 command ships, especially since cruisers already have that functionality included.
Antifighter destroyers is so incredibly niche that you are better off bringing another battleship to field instead.
Black ops BS are not used that much because they lack jump range and need lots of fuel. Not because you can`t already deal plenty of damage in dps fit.
No more capitals in this game either, we have too much of them already. Unless someone can point a niche that is not occupied.
What game needs is BETTER GAMEPLAY and BETTER SANDBOX. New ships should be added only when there is a genuine gameplay need for them to exist. We already have extremely bad example of that in supercaps.
"Although that falls short as well due to all the Icelandic banks being full of debt instead of actual money. "
All money is credit ie. originates from debt issuance. If you are looking for actual money, closest thing to that is physical gold.

The problem with that is that you only are really eliminating the bottom end of the game. You would effectively also damage the bottom end of the market as well.
Make account, run through proxy server, setup bot for a couple days with a nice new shiny Hulk. Run until busted, launder harvest enough so that CCP would never be able to keep up the bans, rinse and repeat.
Instant Orca pilots, instant Freighter pilots, instant battleship fleet.. all fed by buying Plex since the book costs up front would be horrible. Yeah, CCP would rake it in but the game would have lost a chunk of itself in the process. It would also introduce an inflation spike with the sudden demand for higher end ships.
When it was done, the game wouldn't really be any different, everybody would eventually be just as broke and the cry would be for MOAR stuff that CCP simply cannot deliver in a timely or stable fashion. . I'm as mad as I can take it and I'm not going to hell anymore!
I have reassigned my money for CCP to other projects for the next 18 months... |

Thats why i suggested a certificate based system for different career types that a noob could right click on and spend the SP which would then give them a start in a certain direction.

10m is a bit much, but i think all new players should have 1 or 2m sp to spend on whatever they want. its really dumb to get right off the boat and have to wait 2 hours for a skill to train.

I like it, but I fear the new players would crash course through the 10 mil sp then once they actualy hit the wall of haveing to train skills they may be realy turned off?
Why not give them 1mil sp and a high multiplier to training speed thats on a curve?
So they allocate 1mil SP into some skills to get started. The player then loads up the training Q and has a 90% multiplier for the next 2mil of SP trained, then 70% for 2mil SP after that, 50% 2mil sp and then a 30% for 2mil ending with a 10% multiplier on the last 1 mil SP? This approach would be more of a smooth transition into the skill training envirment I think.
I would love 10mil SP tho haha Short term gratification can sometimes turn around and bite you in the but* tho...

I'm not going to debate the SP angle of this one way or the other, other than to in fairness say I am against purchased SP.
Now as to this statement above, we have to first assume that the Nex and all these tales of CCP wanting to consume PLEX are indeed true. Debates fly back and forth over the definition of the meaning of 'liability' in all these debates and few ever seem to be resolved.
What seems to be true is that CCP would suffer negative impact on cash flow when a PLEX is redeemed for game time since they appear to register GTC sales as revenue at the time of purchase - as stated, the debate over the definition of liability goes into 'nyah nyah' debate mode at this stage.
If suddenly there are a bunch of new alts and new players, all sucking up PLEX for game time, then this does little for their cash flow issues as it relates to the volitility of the PLEX markets. In fact this would send PLEX value up in ISK terms and lead to a next month round of GTC purchases dropping the price down yet again and just add more volitility to that market.
We can debate these issues inside out, left right and paint pictures of ponies on it, but a simple fact remains - If CCP wanted to burn up PLEX, they would stop selling them and not advertise them. In-game market and demand would burn up many of them until the 'liability issue' is mitigated.
I see no indications CCP is attempting to slow the purchase of GTCs and PLEX. If anything, stability in the PLEX market would be their desired goal.
My faith in CCP will return SoonÖ We'll watch what you do not what you say.

This. Having 10m SP to spend and KNOWING how to spend are two seperate things. 10m skillpoints and knowing what to do with it both come with experience and playing EVE (assuming you login!).

Fair play that sounds like a good idea to. IMO anything that gets a noob up and running would be great as that is the hardest part of this game imo the begining. Once you get over the inital couple hurdles in game and you can start doing things you start to not mind waiting a month for a skills to train.

I actually liked and endorse giving new players 1-2m sp in a pool to allocate. And then letting them 'remap' their sp once before locking them down at 2.5m or something.
It would make the game a funk ton more accessible and people would not quit because they 'screwed up' their characters etc.
As long as it was proofed as much as possible against exploits I'm down with that.
In fact I was overjoyed when they removed learning .. then ****ed off they also removed the 2x bonus. That was a huge huge help and incentive for new players to stick around and convert their trial to a sub.

Obviously there'd need to some restrictions on skills and/or levels of certain ranked skills etc. But its not something, if done correctly, I'd have any bittervet issues with. I'd have no personal issue if something like this - a 'premium trial' - or similar idea was created as MT.

When the learning skills were removed i had only just finished training the advanced learning skills. So i was one of the thew that actually lost out because of there removal but i completely and totaly welcome the idea of removing them. As noobs are the life blood of any game and anything that helps them get past the hurdels in the begining and increase there chances of sticking around is a good thing imo. About these protest CCP

I agree the game should be more accessible when a new player starts for the very first time, but I don't like the solution. Rather than giving new players more SP, they should reduce the barriers to some of the basic first skills ... make it so a 5M SP character can do some of the things that today require 10M SP.

Just giving out SP in the start would be a really bad idea, I'm quite new and getting 10m SP would confuse me so much in the start. Rather start giving a small boost (faster training, lets say 20%) after 1mil SP until say 5mil SP. At that point of 1mil SP you know the basics of the game and the skilling is starting to feel slow.

Doesn't anyone want to work for anything anymore?
Generally, you appreciate something more when you put more effort into it. Strange as it sounds, the fact that skill training is long and tedious actually makes you enjoy it more. Everybody likes it when they finally ding the skill that allows them to fly a new class of ships. When you can fly everything up to a BS from day one, you rob people of that experience. One of the more significant reasons people come to RPGs is for the feeling of progression, otherwise you might as well be playing an arena shooter.
Climbing certain skill trees requires a major time investment. By requiring this commitment, your character's profession becomes a valuable asset. If players can instantly re-roll (for cash) a near-perfect miner or cov-ops alt, or some other special purpose role, then the people who made a commitment to those those niche jobs lose work.
Count me as skeptical that cheapening SP makes for a better game.

I did say in my opening post it could be more it could be less SP. The idea behind it though is to give you an accellerated start so you can experience more in the game. I'd rather that than you noobs get frustrated and leave which does happen a lot.
Honestly EVE is one hell of a complicated game to give you a comparison. If you have ever played medieval total war 2 thats a pretty complicated game well throw learning to mod on top of that and then creating your own mini mod is several times easier than EVE is imo. About these protest CCP

At the last fanfest iirc a dev said it would take near 20 years to train every skill in the game. A boost at the start is there just to get things rolling 10 mill sp isnt that much in the grand scheme of things. If I was a newb I wouldn't like it. It would remove a lot of the fun of starting in a new game. Things like figuring things out on my own, experiencing the quick early progress.
It would also be pretty confusing if I had access to a lot of ship types with no clue how to fly them. And low level missioning are a lot more fun with low skill point totals, they are actually somewhat challenging. Farming a ton of level 1s to get the challenge up would quickly be a bore.
I may not be representative of other players though.
Another issue is that old players having access to instant 10M SP alts might be a bit of a problem.

Try reading my suggestion once and you'd see a better way of implementing a boost for newbies.
Also afaik old pilots tend to just buy a character instead of training one from 0.

Should probably make sure they all have 9.0 standing with all corps and factions too, and a starting fund of 10bn isk while you're at it.
Sorry, but its a really bad idea.

No, this would hurt them more than help them.
Without knowing how to spend the 10 million skill points they'll end up with useless skills or even unplayable avatars. If you want an alt train it up just like everyone else.

If new players need a boost in SP, your way is certainly better. And CCP did that a few times already by removing learning skills and giving double training speed in the start.
If an old player need an alt, its more expensive to buy one than getting the training for free. Lowering that cost will make an impact.

I would say 100% to 300% training speed up to some limit, say 3 million or 4 million SP.
10 million SP to spend will confuse the new players and if you grant this bonus to all new characters you make it too easy for people to make disposable alt for less *ahem* legit purposes.
Instead confer a training bonus like before.
On CCP's side this is also not a good thing because doling out skillpoints means less account time and a shorter sub time. 10 million skillpoints is equivalent to several months of play time and therefore several months of plex/subs.
Alternatively, give new players skillpoints in selected areas of study, such as a headstart in the selected careers according to their choice in the character creator much like they did before.

Firstly ive just been speaking to a load of noobs in the Chat.E-UNI chatroom and the general consensus was 10 mill sp is far to much but 2 to 3 mill sp would be nice. Secondly i already have a jump freighter/hulk/orca capable alt on a seperate account (ExcalibursSteed) so this genuinly isnt for me. If i needed another alt im more likly to spend 20 to 30 billion in the character bazarre getting a pimped industrialist rather than grind up from zero. About these protest CCP

great idea!
While we're at it, let's give every person joining the game their own -1.0 sovereign system immune to attacks that only they can enter and which stays forever at military and industry 5.
Also, it's not fun getting blown up, right? So how about from now on players spawn with their ships intact after they die in a fire?
Ooh, and it's more fun to fight than to earn isk, so, how about we just close down Tranquility altogether and move everyone onto SISI where everything is basically free?
...
In all seriousness, the reason this game still exists is that the "new player experience" is different. By different I mean harder and therefore meaningful. Making the new player experience have a shallower learning curve is one thing. Making it outright easier is another entirely. If you make this game like other games, people will just play the other games instead.

This. If you don't know what they're talking about, a few years ago character creation had a lot more detailed choices (Not just what school you went to, what program you studied there, experiences after graduating etc etc) that had direct effects on your starting skills; your character would have about 900k SP total, and with the right choices you could come out with very good skills for a single style of gameplay (enough to be nearly into cruisers with decent fitting skills, or able to run about 30+ buy/sell orders from a few systems away, or a whole host of other areas).
This makes the early game a lot more enjoyable as your character is initially more competent, and on top of that means during the tutorials you don't have to constantly switch skill training to fit whatever new module you've just been given, which is frustrating for a new player. It also helps associate various skill areas with professions for new players as they can see how the choices they make in creation affect their skills, and the extra level of character customisation helps build an attachment to that character by establishing a backstory.
Possibly crank the actual SP total this all gives you up to 1-2mil, and put in a training time bonus for new players as well to help them develop beyond that start; the higher SP total can be managed by arranging the skills gained at each step during creation to prevent players overspecialising in any one area (Ideally players should be starting with good but not great skills in the areas they focus on; they shouldn't be immediately ready to step into T2 ships with appropriate fits).

Firstly I think 10 mill SP would be far too much and new chars wouldnt know how to use that wisely
Having said that I do think that an amount lets say 5 mill Sp could be a good idea as along as all existing chars in game got 5 mill SP
Just think of all those new Tgts, Opps I mean chars flying around in low sec and 0.0 or in WH space

Raise base stats by 10% each year on the anniversary of the game's launch.
Every few years, introduce a new tier of skills at a higher multiple.
Every few years, replace a group of related entry-level skills by a common skill.
Result: perpetual treadmill, limited spread between entry and veteran players.

One issue with supercarriers is that they are a huge discouraging factor to triage carrier logistic battles in lowsec. The issue is not that they destroy carriers but rather players are leery to escalate to carriers and dreadnoughts for fear of a super gang. Against a carrier fleet of equal size, its an equal battle. Against a supercarrier gang, even the most resilient pantheon setups will last so long.
An idea would be to bump up their sig radius on their torps to 10km so that they'll still hit on the supercapitals for full damage but still allow lowsec carrier battles ala Rooks and Kings. I believe you'll see alot more dead capitals this way and it is a good thing for lowsec pvp and capital builders in general.
At the end of the day we need to see more pvp, not less.

New player here.
Don't go give people SP the first time they log, you will just add to the learning curve by forcing them to check list of skill and they will use them awfully.
If you want to speed up their trainning, add a epic mission arc and give SP as quest reward. Now, make the quest available only after 2-3 week of play or after someone get X amount of standing with a corp something like that to make sure they have already something they want trainning.
And 10 million his lot too much, 1 or 2 maybe max.

Edited by: Jennifer Starling on 29/06/2011 18:22:58 I think OP's plan has its merits. What I'd agree with is to make some "professions" like miner, industrial, missioner, pvp char, trader/hauler for example and put 5-10 million worth of relevant skills into it. CCP could/should of course check with the playerbase to optimize these as we don't want the silly bloodline SP packages anymore.
Once the player has played for say 2 weeks they get the option to pick one of those professions.

That's actually exactly the issue.
This game is only digestible in small chunks.
When I started playing, I thought I was going into industry. I played one week mining in high-sec belts, got bored and rerolled Minmatar to head towards violence.
From there, I toyed with level 1 missions, and spent awhile learning to fit ships, finding tools like EFT and EVEmon and a corp. To this day, my favorite ship is the Rifter.
Do I think it's a good idea to give people enough skillpoints to hop right into a cruiser on day 1?
No. No I do not.
Cruisers are slower, more boring ships when you first get into them, and you learn less from flying them than you do from trying to stay alive in a badly fitted rifter. They're also more expensive. Yeah, now, 10 million isk fully fitted sounds like a pittance, but I remember when it wasn't.
New players need to make their mistakes in frigates, with cheap mods, cheap ammo, and fast align times. Losing a cruiser on day 1 in EVE would be crushing. Losing a rifter is just an excuse for revenge.
When we need to lock down a lowsec system for a logistics movement, we often find ourselves killing a parade of haulers filled with peoples' worldy possessions, moving on the advice of some questionably-programmed mission agent. Higher SP levels permit people to make that mistake with more expensive toys.
You think that's going to make the new-player experience more *friendly*?

As a new player with about 3.2 million Skill Points!
I think it is a bad idea!
I would rather buy shares in CCP to support them, than get free Skill points.
After just over a month of play I know I am easy meat for any Pirates out there!
I joined EVE because of it's complexity!
So when I finally am able to Win more fights than I lose or earn my 1st Billion! I will be able to hold my head up high as I will know I earned it!
No way do I want it handed to me on a plate like a charity handout.
As far as I am concerned the 'I WANT it NOW, but I DON'T want to do anything for it WoW players can stay in WoW!'
(Note: I played WoW in Beta! Gave up after less than 3 days as it was so blinding simple to level and get wealth it was worse than BORING, it was criminally pandering to the lowest common denominator crowd! As proved by the atrocious language in chat! )

You raise a good point but the one thing your missing is money im not suggestion you give a noob isk. Just accellerate the rate at which they learn so they can experience more of eve sooner. They might have the skills to fly a cruiser but can they actually afford one ?

Bad idea. This would very strongly encourage trial-account abuse. Any lump of SP like that can be abused to completely focus into a particular training path, at which point you can easily get a blob of T2 frigates with very little ISK input. Every player who could run multiple clients could have a couple of Kitsune alts or something.
Your intent to help newbies get started out is good, but newbies can't afford stuff that needs 10m SP in the first place. Also, as others have pointed out, this is sort of "easy mode", which just does not fit into the Eve universe. Remember that there is no "endgame" to Eve, just various ways to "win", with more opening up the more you play. Opening up more for new players is good, but it would be better done by adding more variety, not giving them more advanced options. That may just be giving them enough rope to hang themselves with (save for two weeks for a new AF, then ragequit when you die in a fire with it).
I'll gladly take the 10m SP bonus to my SP though! :D

They should at least accelerate skill training time 5 times for like the first month of play, and not let it apply to level 5 skills or something. Or just overhaul the character creation at the begining so that a new character doesn't have to spend two hours training every time he sees a new mod to put on his ship. New characters do not start with enough base skills, and it is incredibly annoying being new having to just hurry up and wait.

Ok instead if giving noobs a flat out amount of SP how about giving them a big boost in there support skills depending on there choice of carear. I dont know say they want to be a miner they get a head start in the mining lasor and astrometric skills. Also no matter what carear they pick you they get a nice boost to the engineering & electronic skills. So they get a boost to skill they deffinatly need but they dont actually know how important that skill is yet. About these protest CCP

I dunno... I think it's good to start out at the bottom. Some new players are probably jumping ahead of themselves. They can get into new ships and acquire new mods fairly quickly, so have plenty to look forward to in the early days. Also helps with the learning process if you do one thing at a time.
I'm all for finding ways to retain new players and often think it would be a good idea to make the starter systems safe. Warfare mods are jammed, and theft initiates a concord response and the stolen items are returned to the owner. Mission sites would be exempt but only for the mission runner.
They could move out when they feel ready and there is no incentive for older players to seek harbour there, so it's not gonna be a problem is it? The rest of high sec stays as is, and maybe no war decked, or deccing corps can enter the system? Would have to think it through...
Harassment and theft have to be the biggest problems for noobs and there's not much they can do about it. Give them a chance to get started in safety.

Newbies don't need 5 mil skill points to start off with to enjoy eve. This is how CCP can make money up the wazoo and keep newbies in eve: First, eliminate all skills. That's right, make everyone capable of flying any damn ship in game and fit it with anything they can get their grubby hands on. Second, allow capitals and supercapitals into hi sec. Third, make capitals and supercapitals only cost maybe 50 million. Even the sorriest, laziest person could make 50 million a day running missions or mining veldspar. Why so low? So everyone can fly these mad ships and create such an ungodly, gaming environment. I can imagine hundreds, even thousands of Titans and Moms blowing the living crap out of each other, regardless, of corporation and what we have is a "Space" version of damm Modern Warfare/Battlefield 2 or whatever FPS that rocks everybody's socks. Just Do it, CCP!!!!
