Simply, in-game currency (Aurum or ISK) cannot be converted back into RL cash. This presents a problem for your uber rich EVE player, what to do with your trillions of ISK?? The humble monocle offers a nice, if vain, option in which to splash the ISK that would otherwise sit in your EVE wallet doing nothing.
Trillions of ISK, well for starters, you can singlehandedly change the face of the game with your wallet alone. If your money is doing nothing, you are failing.

You do realize this is EVE, right? The only thing that is possible to achieve overnight in this game is to make an ass of yourself on the forums.
In reply:
1) Trillionaires (meh, multi-billionaires) will, I guess, have conquered most of EVE by definition - therefore lil' old shiney monocle is just another shot in the arm for the ISK junkie. So my point stands, the rich EVE player will be buying these, in their droves.
2) "Butthole" in your face. Crikey, you sound like a bitter peasant.
3) If EVE was only a forum, and the end-point was to embarrass oneself in cyberspace then I would have won EVE yonks ago and quit, my work done. But I haven't quit, because I have to keep playing to save up for a monocle. No I won't be buying GTC, to get plex to buy Aurum. I might be a master of the Freudian Slip, but I'm not an idiot.
