Because they have become a symbol of status. Monoclers show their in-game wealth and in my opinion this adds an awesome depth to the social aspect of EVE. In fact, I hope that they introduce an even MORE expensive vanity item to make a difference between the monoclers aristocrats. Also, I hope they introduce cheaper stuff for us, the poor people.
In my opinion, Aurum isn't intended to be a Real Money Maker, but a PLEX destroyer. There's no difference between expending 1b ISK for an item or expending 1b ISK to buy a few PLEX and get that same item. hence all the pay-to-win whine is pointless. My biggest fear about MT was that it could be detrimental to the industrialists, but this has been proven to be an unfounded fear.

Their price absolutely shouldn¦t be lowered.
It¦s a very convenient idiot-badge - also known as "moronocle" - right in the middle of the char portrait. It cries: "This guy has paid 70 bucks for this crap, suicide gank him to look what is inside of his ship."

Monocle prices are going to look cheap when the option to paint your ships and add logos is implemented, but as NX sales increase it will help close the wealth gap that currently exists.

My personal opinion: the monocle is only 2 isk (looks that cheap anyway). The $70 comes mostly having to do the surgery to remove your eyebrow.

I for one really hope they lower the price, not because I'd then buy one, but to see the tear flood from those who payed that much for them to begin with.

You sir, are the one that fails at money.
Let's go back to infant school and try and make this easy.
70$ equals 3.5 Plex equals 12,000 Aurum = 1 monocle This equation, however, is not commutative, i.e.
1 monocle NOT EQUAL TO 12,000 Aurum NOT EQUAL TO Plex NOT EQUAL TO 70$
Simply, in-game currency (Aurum or ISK) cannot be converted back into RL cash. This presents a problem for your uber rich EVE player, what to do with your trillions of ISK?? The humble monocle offers a nice, if vain, option in which to splash the ISK that would otherwise sit in your EVE wallet doing nothing.
If a player pays for a GTC, to sell a Plex to convert to Aurum to buy a monocle - they are stupid. But no single player is doing this. The only people paying for monocles are the uber EVE rich, not the RL rich. On that premise, why the hell are so many people getting their knickers in a twist over this?
Point is, the game needs impossible to get items (at least for the poor EVE player) as this creates aspiration and ambition. Without this element, no one would continue playing EVE if everything was achieveable over-night. Of course, $$$ for SP would be bad - but that has nothing to do with a monocle, so, to repeat, why the angst about the bloody monocle?

Trillions of ISK, well for starters, you can singlehandedly change the face of the game with your wallet alone. If your money is doing nothing, you are failing.

Why the hell are so many players proud of the butthole on their face? Just because it was 'expensive'?

You do realize this is EVE, right? The only thing that is possible to achieve overnight in this game is to make an ass of yourself on the forums.

No one can answer this question it seems. Not even the people *****ing about vanity items.
