Hi. Im a new player, subscribed a few days ago. I would like some help in choosing a line of ships for long therm, considering my goal is pvp. I really like the amarr and gallente ships but thats based on looks only, dont know how practical they are in combat. What would you guys recomend? I dont like the minmatar ones or the missile boats. I dont want to dps all the time rather switch to support ships from time to time. Also im skilling a trade alt atm whos is doing well isk wise, should i buy a pvp character when im finished with the alt or just train it myself? Many thanks in advance!

I would suggest training for Minmatar initially, with an intent to crosstrain to Amarr later. Both are turret users, so the same support skills apply. Amarr has issues with applying damage to EM/Thermal resistant enemies, which Minmatar does quite well.
Minmatar is primarily shield, but has a few armor tanking ships. Amarr is almost exclusively armor tanked. While this sounds like unnecessary crosstraining, the reality is that most corporations you'll get into use both armor and shield tanking, so it's actually an advantage being able to field something appropriate to both configurations.
In any case, I suggest keeping a safe distance from missiles. While they can be useful in isolated (mostly PvE) contexts, they're largely a dead end. By comparison, a projectile turret training plan is allows you to use lasers or hybrids without too much trouble.

While you won't find many Gallente supporters on this forum, if the hulls appeal to you, train them and you can find a viable use for them. I'm not a fan of hybrid ships bigger than frigates myself, but the drone based hulls of all sizes are pretty fantastic. ...Then when you stopped to think about it. All you really said was Lalala. |

If you can afford it, you could also consider getting another account. EVE is one of the games where multiple accounts really benefits you. For example, as you say - one for serious trade skills, and one for wasting the money made from it in PvP ;)
I am Amarr myself, but in no way do I claim this to be the best PvP race. In the end, it is more important that you like your ship/playstyle than having a "small" edge on the enemy through racial differences. Rather few fights happen on equal terms to start.
If you want Amarr ships and I were to advice you - I would say you should skill up frigs and cruisers (max out cruisers!). Amarr has really good T2 cruisers for PvP. Once your core skills (engi., electr., mech., nav. etc) are high/maxed, you are close to the T3 cruiser as well. Even if the top dog of T3s is the Caldary one, the differences are not as huge as some like to make it sound like. Once you have your T3 (regardless of race), there are several ways to fit it into different kind of roles.
Good luck - and gogo lasers!

One exception to this is Heavy Missiles and the Drake. They are currently still the most popular fleet choice for there Range Projection, Low Cost, Medium Speed and High Tank.
I would suggest that once you have Minmatar Skills in order and the Battlecruiser skill you train some Missile skills and Caldari Cruiser III to fly a Drake.

You want "cool" or "effective"?
Anyway, by all means go Amarr! Although some missile skills may still be handy in the long run (Khanid ships: Sacrilege, Malediction, Vengeance, Curse, Damnation) .. |
