Aye, playing.
Kinda on hold waiting for their new engine / pvp rebalance thing to hit live tho.
You might create a free account to check it out, and ask for 1 month free offer in general chat channel, i know some paid players have received up to 5 keys to give away to their buds this month.

This, though the item shop was the break point for me to stop giving FUncom my money while I wait. Different economic situation in AO at least but I still loathe the concept wholeheartedly
The game is old and creaky but it's got it's charms, certainly. -----

I was playing AO again for a bit... but the population is low now.

AO was quite good back in the day. There was a good deal of iffy content, but mitigating that was a sense of massive scale, a subjective thing that still can't be quantified. Also, the little things -the spot effects, the sheer bedlam of those planetary cannons shaking the environment itself every few seconds was and still is memorable. The place felt massive somehow, bit like your Morrowind and similar. That's the thing that EVE still lacks, in my opinion. Those nebulae we're used to give a constrained boxed-in feeling. Would be happier more black vacuum, more stars, less tapeworm gas nebulae.
But AO, yes, enjoyable whilst it lasted. What's the playerbase count like nowadays?

I played AO for a long time and miss it dearly.
To this day I still think that it is the best game out there (besides EVE of course)
Give me AO 2 and I will subscribe :)

Played for around 5 years in all. Left a couple of years ago, dread to imagine the population figures now hanging on for the engine. I miss places and people from that game as if they were real. This character is an 'extension' of one from that game, my main was Rustinel on Rimor.
Good memories.

Can you (eventually) "PLEX" your way to a "free" sub in any of the other games without breaking any rules ? If not, not interested. I'm not planning on paying any non-negligible cash amounts for any MMOs ever again. _

my one gripe with AO was that to get good gear on, you had to spend like 5 hours twinking, not to mention the time it took to get the gear in the first place.

Update.
According to this thread (all about EVE, ironically) someone claims that the pbase is now "...600 total. Lets say 500 as some are dual logging" (posted today). That's comparable to some of the P2W commercial codebase MUDs -still clinging on by their fingernails -during their heyday, 2001-ish.
Was going to re-visit AO for the fond memories, but this is tantamount to a single-player experience given such a sprawling virtual environment. Shame, that.

Sure I played AO for about 2 years (alien invasion was released shortly after I started) but that was long ago. Hmm I topped playing when WOW was released and server emptied it self in one night and realized I suddenly had no one to play with... Most of my buddies were on froobie accounts so I was kind of screwed and gave WOW my little finger which it kept 2-3 years until I realized that TBC-expansion didn't really bring anything new to the game, except killing out door pvp for good. So I found EVE with some deserter buddies and we formed a corp. I did quit EVE after almost a year to try out LOTRO, AOC and WAR which all failed in their own regards. Lotro by being too traditional to go on even if monster play was great fun. AOC simply had no content to do anything reasonable except grind xp until max lvl and pvp balance was a joke (I mean if you think EVE is harsh at least you won't get ganked by vets while tutorial demo is still running ...) And WAR degenerated it self into a mindless PvP-grind & zerg fest that had no reason or purpose, mythic also ****ed up the lore from the original warhammer and gave a f'ck about game balance (especially in regards to PvP in supposedly PvP oriented game ...)
So yeah AO had it's share of glory and I did made a small visit but game had lost something, not sure what but it just didn't feel the same as it once did almost 8 years ago.

It is either EVE or no MMO for me. I have yet to see any MMO offer what EVE does really. Even the lame robots in perpetum lack it.
So I guess more time for RL ;) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
