Babylon 5 was conceived as a "novel for television", with a defined beginning, middle, and end.

Babylon 5 is likely the best Sci Fi story told on television, period. You REALLY want to see the PILOT, please watch the pilot! after that the first season is little rocky, the second season it starts to go, the third and fourth are simply amazing. Too bad the network put pressure on them to speed it up to get to the action ASAP. The last season was compressed because of it.

The thing that sets Bab 5 apart is that strazynski had the full five year story arc worked before he pitched it to the network. Thats why stuff in the first series suddenly becomes relevant in the fourth.
Masterpiece, really was. Unfortunately the network screwed it up when they didnt commit to a fifth series, so the fight to retake earth and depose president clarke which should have been in the fifth series got squeezed into the fourth, and alas the fifth series needed filler.
Still a truly epic sci fi series though.

Also EVE could use some riddles and strange races, anyone ever played Earth and Beyond when trying to solve the puzzles of the new alien races you met? CCP and creative fantasy don't seem to mix yet they also develop a fantasy game. LOlz I wonder from whom they bought the whole EVE backstory... |

Greatest sci-fi series do not become MMO's. Check.
If they manage to make it to the internet gaming scene they either are canceled, or the production mostly sucks. Check
We get to stuck we WoW's in space like Star trek or SWTOR. Check.
The only alternative always seems to be spreadsheets and blinking dots in space [EVE Online] Check.
YEP! Deffinately something is not right here! If you check the humongus volume of epic quality sci-fi that it is out there and has been since the age of Jules Vern, NO wait! Since the age of Lucian 125 A.D. then you realise that the current lack of decent sci-fi MMO quality on the internets IT SIMPLY DOES NOT COMPUTE!
Quote: Main article: List of works by Lucian Lucian was also one of the earliest novelists in Western civilization. In A True Story, a fictional narrative work written in prose, he parodied some fantastic tales told by Homer in the Odyssey and some feeble fantasies that were popular in his time. He anticipated "modern" fictional themes like voyages to the moon and Venus, extraterrestrial life and wars between planets, nearly two millennia before Jules Verne and H. G. Wells. His novel is widely regarded as an early, if not the earliest science fiction work.[7][8][9][10][11]

Is this the thread where I state my disgust for Babylon 5? First couple of episodes I saw, just had my wondering if they hired the worst layed-off scriptworker from Stargate (or possibly Stargate: Atlantis).
I can't even watch ten minutes without feeling ashame for the poor script and (lack of) acting. Not to mention the setting, there was painted "rocks" in the ancient Star Trek that looked better than anything B5 could conjure up..
Guess it has something tho, it wouldn't air if it didn't pull in money somehow. But, it's actually worse trash than some high-profile soaps. Some of you mentioned the characters in Babylon 5. Well there you go, in Days of our lives, Dallas, Falcon Crest or whichever ****ty long-running soap you want, it was all about the characters (and drama). Babylon 5 is just a more embarrassing version of that. -

Pretty much this. Babylon 5 was a great series but has a really slow start. But you can't skip the beginning of Babylon 5 because it all becomes relevant in the second season and then really becomes relevant in the third, which makes the first season awesome in retrospect.
But yeah, I agree that the first season (and the pilot) are... really bad, in some respects. It's just something that I'd say you'll have to stomach through in order to get the massive amounts of win later on in the series.

Yes, basically you have to just 'pay your dues' watching the Pilot and Season 1 in order to have the foundation for the *very* satisfying long term payoff.

As said by G'Kar, "...the war had paused, suddenly and unexpectedly. All around us, it was as if the universe were holding its breathàwaiting. All of life can be broken down into moments of transition, or momentsàof revelation. This had the feeling of both.
G'Quan wrote, "There is a greater darkness than the one we fight. It is the darkness of the soul that has lost its way. The war we fight is not against powers and principalities, it is against chaos and despair. Greater than the death of flesh is the death of hope. The death of dreams. Against this peril we can never surrender." The future is all around us, waiting in moments of transition, to be born in moments of revelation. No one knows the shape of that future, or where it will take us. We know only that it is always bornàin pain."

Meh...
With the growth of cable TV, the strangle hold on new programming by the major networks was broken. Individual TV Show producers could go straight to sindication on numerous cable networks bypassing the major networks and local affiliates.
This spawned a crud ton of new shows. Star Trek TNG, Hercules, it's spin off spin Zena, B5, Techwar, etc, etc, etc, etc... It was awesome. If I missed B5 on TBS, I could catch it later in the week on WGN, or on another afternoon on local tv or...
After a couple years as direct to sindication tv sucked more and more and more viewers away from the 4 big networks and their local affiliates, they began to lobby the USA Congress HARD. "OHs NOs!!!! IT WILL BE THE END OF LOCAL TV AND LOCAL NEWS!!!!!"
So congress was bought off and passed a new law that if a local station carried a direct to TV original run series, the program had to be blocked on all non-local cable stations. I would turn on TBS at B5 time to find a black screen with plain text saying this program blocked.
With the loss in revenue from being able to auction the rights to programs direct to multiple cable stations in first run, the independants slowly started closing up and being forced to go back to the networks.
B5's original 5 year arc was quickly rewrtten, slamming the final 2 years into only 1. Then TBS came up with the money to buy a 5th season of B5, so they had to rewrite again.
The series finally which ran at the end of season 5 was supposed to run at the end of season 4 when it was originally shot.
But, anyway, back to the disturbance in the force.....
"It was our last best hope for peace, but it failed. Now it is our last, best hope for victory."
Microtransactions are something, up with which, we shall not put.

Season 4, imo, was the real ending of the series. The story arcs if you can can hang in through the first season start hooking you in the second season. But the third season you're like a crack addict stealing everything you can get your hands on to get your fix.
The pilot, I've only seen once. You'll enjoy the character development between the pilot and season one. Londo Mallari is by far my favorite character of any series.

B5 was by far and away the best written, acted and developed series of sci fi from an era of basically carp.
Farscape was weird sci fi, going back to the days of Flash Gordon and the Saturday afternoon cinema sci fi. Briliantly acted but some of the storywriting wasnt up to the same level.
Firefly, oh for a chance to do that series again. Born in an age of AAD teenagers dribbling over/wanting to be Buffy. Worst crime, Andromeda got more series than it did!!!!
One more I would like to throw into the pot. Space : above and beyond was BSG:2003 styled, well charactirised and ALOT of fun (Chigy Von Ricktohoven). Another show with so much potential born in the wrong era.

B5 was well written. That I can agree upon. Actor quality? I'll just say that they had some very talented people, and then a lot were not.
Farscape, you don't want to go there. Post STTNG, it's the best sci-fi out there, imo. Some of their 'quirky' episodes were pure fun. One in particular, I'll concede it was pure crap. Beyond that, the overall quality of the show was top notch.
Firefly, this is another show I didn't watch until video. It had a lot of potential. Ashame it was only one season and a movie. The acting here was pretty good too.
