My sources tells me it means that you can forever have a totally useless character that can't do ****. Basically it's a trial with all it's massive limitations, but no expiration date.

Edited by: Farrisen on 01/07/2011 11:06:49 There doing what Warhammer-online did.
Trial account free forever, level cap is 20 (warhammer had lvl 14 i think) And from what i understand there's a limit to your Gold etc etc, so no "farming alts" ^^
Also sadly i know people who play "that game" and i believe the lvl cap (from the latest expansion) is 85 if memory serves me right :P
So in short, i think it's just a coincidence
Edit: What the guy above said :P

Way to be ahead of the curve CCP, so endless trials that can only fly cruisers and lvl 2 missions. It's a good idea.

Level 20 is a matter of a couple of hours in WoW, so it really doesn't mean much. Still a good idea though. Someone could potentially level all classes to 20 and then decide if he wants to start subscribing, and what class to continue with.
f2p is the wrong term here clearly. More like a Trial not limited by time.

A lvl 20 wow toon is more useful than a month old eve toon, you can actually do stuff in the game and make a decision whether you like it or not
Bottom line is you can get a lvl 85 in a few weeks, but in eve you keep your L plates for a couple of years at least!
I'm not saying CCP should make eve like wow I play both for different reasons. But this seems to be the direction they want to go in.

Even a new player who has never played WoW before will reach lvl 20 within 1-3 days.
Also you don't drop back to the starter edition if you unsubscribe.

Blizzard has always been clever with their market strategies. They might be marketing it big, but all they have done is combine the oldest expansion with the installer client (making it free, about time really) and change the trail to unlimited playtime. Trails however are still bound to numerous restrictions.
(Players can't have more than 10 gold, they can't chat in general chats, they can't trade with other players and they can only go up to lvl 20 limiting the areas these players can go without being horribly slaughtered. --------------------------------------------- Somewhere beyond happyness and sadness, I need to calculate what creates my own madness o/

Unlike WoW, In EvE even though you have your learning plate for a good 2-3 years after you've joined, you can still kill others, crash a market, grief carebears and mission run in your first couple of hours. The Learning plate isn't bad. The only people that're bad are the people that use it as an excuse for everything.

It is actually a gargantuan nerf to WoW trials compared to the ten-day things they had. Yes, that is right, it has nothing to do with F2P .. it is merely another way of doing a trial account.
You'll hit level 20 in no time flat and then what? Like all the other themeparks their main focus is on the end-game so the stuff starting out is as outdated as monogamy.
Before you could almost max out a character while technically playing "for free" (power levelling saves ones sanity!) .. now not so much.
It is nothing but methadone for the penny-less addicts.

Edited by: Vaerah Vahrokha on 01/07/2011 11:24:42 Warhammer Online had many defects but introduced some novel concepts.
- Introduced public quests (later copied by other MMOs including EvE (incursions).
- Keeps being one of the few games where you can have RvR (realm vs realm)
- Can indifferently level up soloing, questing, grouping, instancing, doing "battlegrounds" (called scenarios iirc) and doing RvR and even open RvR. IE you can just PvP your way to top level and also get the best gear in the process.
- Years ago it featured something like EvE's sov structures.
- It featured achievements, which WoW quickly copied in the next expansion.
- Unlike EvE, it has a rich in game API for developing mods and they don't pretend to charge $99, despite Game Workshop's IP is an order of magnitude better and larger than EvE's.
- Finally, they introduced a so called Free Forever Trial, where you can play in tier 1 forever. WoW copied that as well. Initially the free trial was almost limit-less, then gold farmers exploited the ability to grind gold etc. so they put caps on what you can do, removed ability to mail from those trials (gold farmers would send items) and even removed ability to use the chats that gold farmers would use to spam with.

Good breakdown.. but even this trial experience is better than the eve one.
At lvl 20 a new wow player will already have all the basic abilities relevant to their class. As well as access to several instances and a PvP battleground.
A new eve player will have access to very little at the end of their 14 day trial. They wont even be able to join a player corp unless the recruiters are desperate.
I have some sympathy with ppl who argue the steep learning curve is one of the things that makes eve great. The epic factor is what always keeps me coming back. But I think CCP have also hit a brick wall when it comes to plater retention and need to adapt to take eve to the next level.

It would be a godsend for battleground bunnies. Lvl 19 PvP is very popular and the 10 gold limit is ok, because that's what it costs to switch off the lvl gaining. A bit of grinding in dungeons for the right kit and free PvP!

I agree with a lot of what you say, I'm not personally trying to make excuses, more playing devils advocate
I'm a 2006 player and have several high sp toons, but I'm not ashamed to admit I've also been playing wow since 2005 so trying to offer this perspective

It's very clever from Blizzard: a lot of players will start playing WoW with level 1-20 toons, and will be tempted to play them further, thus will have to pay. As someone pointed out above, a level 20 toon in WoW is an insignificant iota. Level 20 is reachable within a few hours of play, jfyi. ----------------------------------------------- J'aime l'oignon frit a l'huile, j'aime l'oignon quand il est bon. |

Ugh, stupid misleading thread title. Its just an unlimited duration trial. A level 20 cap is very restrictive. Good marketing tool though.

ive not played wow for quite a few years, but i generally got bored of characters at around level 25 at most. filled all 10 character slots on 2 or 3 different shards with characters that never went higher than 26 - 27. have a friend with several capped characters and whenever i see him playing its all just children screaming at each other, not my cup of tea at all.
8 years in eve and im still on my original 3 characters and having a great time. after a few months of wow i was ready to stop gaming alltogether. fortunatly i have eve to keep me balanced, or did, i had eve... thats going to take some getting used to. |

Another example of Headlines giving false information tailored for maximum impact.
This is no different then Playing Eve-Online for 14 Days for free. Instead of time WOW allows you to play to Level 20 for free, which is about 5 maybe 10 hours. |

Level 20 in WoW is like 2-3 days of playing unless you go totally mental, you can probably do it in a day.
