Intro and Idea:
Okay, Back when the Zephyr came i thought "this is a neat little ship" it was supposed to run on solar rays like if it was a sailboat using normal wind. However i didn't really think CCP got the maximum out of this ship concept! I mean.. how can a ship with its sail placed like that move in any direaction but with the solar winds= Away from the sun.
So i've been thinking, it would be cool if they made sports ships with turnable sails so you didnt stear the speed of the ship by clicking in the direction you wanted.. but by clicking in the direction you wanted and ajusting the sails acording to the position of the sun. Now i've made this Illustration to show what i mean and how you could modify the hud for it:
Now i'm sure some PPL might ask "Why the heck would we want crap like that in the game? Its gonna die horrible in pvp... and it sucks at mining..." the answer to that is that this could actually be used for Racing purpose!
Now imagen a race course with 3 checkpoints the ships have to cross. The pilot who adjust his sails the best will gain the most speed, and the fact that it will be somewhat difficult to turn against the sun will make for intresting racing possibilities.. as ppl can catch up if a player makes a bad turn!
It would be a racing sport where it isnt the equipment and or the skills that determin who's fastest.. but the pilots skills in piloting!
You could have different classes like: Mono wing (an easy steerable ship as you only would have one wing to control) and double wing (for the more pro sailor) or even more wings...
Who wouldn't try his luck in Eve's New Gentlemen Sport?
What do you guys think? am i crazy..? or does this sound like an intresting concept?

Serenity 5th Anniversary space race.
Chinese get all the cool stuff!
- Basically a course constructed by large bubbles. Racers are allowed to use any means necessary short of shooting each other to win.

Yeah its a race.. but with the right skills and implants you can get a high advantage.. and then it isn't really the skills at steering the ship thats talking.
Any way i just thought it would be awesome with a sailing boat competition, but i can see the problem... it would be a silly feature to spend precious developing time on

Sounds good, i don't see it as a silly feature to spend time on most MMO have lots of little mini-game type things yet eve has absolutely none

I can imagine "tacking" the ship during a race when sailing against the sun (wind).
Agreed that either a redesign of the Zephyr or new ship design is needed to show a plausible sailing mechanic.
Agreed that no pilot skills should influence the ship behaviour. Maybe even disallow webifiers to affect the ship as the ship isn't using engines.
It would be awesome seeing the sails unfurl when you start to move, and close up when activating warp where the ships engines take over.
Low hp
Edit: maybe different classes of ship, sailing skill levels?
Normal persons competitive mini-game!

there are so many problems with the solar sails in EVE. and even more so with your design of solar sails. I wish I could quote the first 2 chapters or so of a book called "the mote in gods eye" that has proper usage of solar sails. the sails need to be absolutely huge while weighing next to nothing and still working as they need to. and with that includes the wires tying it to the payload. when put together the sail could be 2-3KM across while weighing a few hundred pounds max and the payload is held as far back as possible to prevent the sail from bending. basically, racing solar sail ships is not feasible.

Thx for the faves and! Exactly! I have a feeling that keeping track of two sails in the beginning can be a little difficult task when it comes to the point were you have to turn. So the first ones might only be one engine with a turn-able sail, like when windsurfing :)
it could even be made so that you could by different types of sails and stuff like that.

That is true as is this: space has no sound, you cannot move properly through it with yet engines only trusting behind you. To turn you need engine thrust to the sides aswell, and you wouldnt need a constant burst to move just a "psst" and you would continue in the same speed and shields and lasers can be discussed in a long time as well.
my point is: if eve became a space simulator, it might become rather boring for most players... (no disrespect meant)
Any way, my point wasn't that the solar sails needed to be a 100% realistic, just that they should work like sails.. not just be visible cool.. you know that you would have to work with them to get in the direction you wanted at the speed you wanted :)

shields and lasers are things that we can accept as part of the "future" tech, but if we were to make it a space sim, it would take some getting used to but I think people would still play it. and it might possibly start fixing the BS that starwars brought to the scene.

Edited by: Therishia Amarthon on 02/07/2011 14:13:39 Edited by: Therishia Amarthon on 02/07/2011 14:07:49 part of future tech yes... but i dont think that the tech eve visible presents has the ability to stop "light" from hitting its target.
Agreed that star wars is unrealistic.. but if we go to that matter figting in space would be a very risky... i'd say it would be even more risky then fighting in a submarine vs a submarine.. a breach would kill you in so many ways.
And to comment on my idea for a ship design, i want to point out that its just a remodel of the original Zephyr, which has the possibility to turn the sails and make it maneuverable in the same way as windsurf is on the sea.(my only experience with sails)
My design wasnt a final, it was a suggestion to how it could be done.. like this whole topic is a question if it would create interesting possibilities and gameplay within eve.
when or if that is comfirmed.. the time comes to how to do it. not to mention that ccp has the final call
This is a visual link of the solar sails, from your book:

or at least it was what i found when searching for the book title and solar sails

If only we had CCP employees who would spend the time to do cool **** with us. While CCP Reykjavik and CCP Atlanta do what they do at work then rush home to spend time with family or get drunk, CCP Shanghai go to work then go home and play EVE.
