Edited by: Heebzz on 03/07/2011 00:47:22 Okay so I have two chars one is my miner, and the other is hauler.
Now at the moment I mine in a retriever, I mine pyro/veld and haul back using my hauler.
Now I'm wondering what is better, a Mackinaw mining ice, or Hulk mining pyro/veld?
This is what I have atm, nearly full orca boosts this is my current info counting all the boosts in no laser upgrades, 1% mining implant, working on mining barge 5 (as in not there yet).
Mining Amount 1280.55375 m3 Time 133.43 s Range 23.732 km

Do the math with a Mackinaw mining ice and the cost of selling it, VS a Hulk mining pyro/veld and the cost of selling it.
Whichever makes more ISK, do it!

Edited by: Missm Uppet on 03/07/2011 15:21:37 Ice mining has historically been lower ISK per hour then ore mining. Recently though it's been a fairly decent income after CCP got serious with banning some of the bot activity.
As the poster above stated, you'll have to do your own analysis of profit for each activity to get a good idea of which yield better ISK per hour. Ice mining has the benefit of being much less interactive and so you can generally do a lot of other stuff - chat, trade, queue industry jobs - while you mine ice. For that reason I think it's a fairly good alternative to mining ore, even though it may yield a few million ISK less per hour.

I do a alot of large scale mining, and for even small stuff a great little program to have is called mineral calculator, gives you yeilds minerals/hour and isk income/split payment if in a fleet, might help you decide. Also does M3 to figure in hauler size and amount of trips it has to make blah blah, very nice program lets just say that

A Hulk mining just Veldspar will be more profitable than mining standard ice in high sec.If you could find 5% or 10% ice in high sec then ice would be better but I don't think thy are available in high sec. A Hulk mining Pyroxeres AND Veldspar will probably be even more profitable than just Veldspar vs ice. Haven't done the math on that though as I'm in Minmatar space. Add in the fact that ice mining is boring(I don't like the word 'boring' but it has to be said. ) and that you are more likely to be suicide ganked in an ice belt and you should know what to do. Also the refined ice products degrade while in storage so you can't store them in that state.

This has been known to happen, but mostly in rent subsidized stations. Slum-lord corps fail to maintain adequate facilities for their renters, resulting in storage bays with improper cooling systems.

Re. refined ice products degrading while in storage you obviously haven't watched them as closely as I have. I only noticed it because I was doing the maths as to whether ore or ice was better to mine. Probably to do with them being radioactive. Anyway they degrade by a very small percentage each day. Trust me.

I've ran multiple POSes for years and always kept 6 to 12 months supply onhand between Corp Hangars at a POS, Corp Hangars at an NPC station, and personal hangars. Once I get the fuel I break it down into stacks for a 21 day supply and have never lost anything.
Does it only happen under certain circumstances or locations?

No, it's doesn't degrade, age, melt, dance a jig, or any such thing. The only thing that's going to affect refining results is skill & standings.
