I always thought was short for pubescent, referring to teenage gamers with multiple 'x's and numbers in their usernames. Turns out it's just anyway who's not a Goon, a bit like how all non-Jews are called Goyim. =P Anyway, after a good laugh at my expense I decided to research the origin of the word and found some interesting stuff in the urban dictionary. Here are the entries for "pubbie", and the entries for "pubbies". Thought it was pretty funny myself. So anyone else thought a pubbie was something other that what it is? I still think the word itself came from "pubescent" or "prepubescent", or at least it would be funnier than just someone from the general public.

I just thought it was interesting how you can have a different idea of what a certain word or internet meme means just by the context in which it's used. I always thought a pubbie was a terrible thing to be, turns out it's not actually bad at all.

BarryBonez Caldari Ixion Defence Systems Test Alliance Please Ignore	Posted - 2011.08.20 05:33:00 - [39] well back in the days of counter strike (well before eve), people who would scrimmage all day and play in the Cal/CPL leagues found themselves to be superior to those who simply played the game on regular, or public servers. Hence the term pubstar came to be as a sort of sarcastic insult to someone who had a good kill/death ratio or 'tried too hard' (usually this means camping when they are the last one alive) on a public server, but would otherwise suck if faced with stiffer competition from those who played on non-public servers. i dont think it would be a stretch to relate pubstar to pubbie, especially when considering the sheer amount of players counterstrike had. More than a few probably ended up playing Eve and the insult followed them despite the entire eve universe being a public server of sorts.
