Well sorry I already wrote my goodbyeletter but I just wanted to show something I found disturbing.
Statistics - Can be used to lie and show you what you want...so here is what I see, feel free to disagree.
2008 July 1st - EVE had 21417 players online (average).
2009 July 1st - EVE had 26555 players online, someone made something good here as we have 5k more players online on average.
2010 July 1st - EVE had 31613 players online, wow in 2 years CCP increased thier playerbase by ALOT, 10k more players online on average.
2011 July 1st - EVE had 29662 players online, for the first year in a long time (2008) EVE Online is decreasing on average players online.
Now here is the trick questions CCP needs to ask themselfs, why don't we have 36k players online on average in 2011 and what will we do to get 41k players online untill 2012.
Now troll away as you please but this in my eyes shows me CCP done something wrong in the last year (or longer). The player base is decreasing by 2000 players online on average instead of keeping the pace they had earlier whit a steady increas of 5000 players/year. What I have noticed is that releasing some types of features (new ships and regions) will keep the player base happy, while releasing graphic improvments have done very little to impress the players.

Statistical significance... You took one sample out of 365 possible days... Just because there is a drop by 2000 players in one sample proves nothing.

You know, there was this thing, like last week. Everyone was like, OMG, gag me with a spoon P2W, no way dude! And then like, ya know the CSM and CCP got together and like totally worked it out man. And they were like, "Dude! No P2W for Eve, it's gonna be like vanity only, omg!". And it's like cool now, man so, ya know, for the time being we can all chill and relax and stop totally raging over what CCP is doing. Cuz, ya know, it's like, dude, their game and even though they, like, seem to, ya know, recognize what is it we want in a game, they not like, ya know, gonna totally do everything we say. Dudeman, they've been like talking about Incarna and walking in stations for like the longest time. So chill man and relax.

Your character portrait is the single most beautiful piece of art that I've seen in the last couple of years. Excellent mix of Salvador Dali's melting theme, Picasso's abstract art, tribal motives and modern lipstick that looks like some Mustang paintjob.

I work for a company that has hundreds of thousands of clients. When the number of clients started to decline, we had to crunch a lot of numbers to figure out why and to identify which clients were the most likely to remain and which were more likely to leave. We found exactly what one would expect to find: there was a core group of clients who had been with us the longest, and they were the most likely to remain. It was the new clients who were the most likely to leave. So, our marketing department went to work on identifying the traits of this core group so that they could better identify future customers who share the same traits.
Seems pretty obvious, right? I assure you - this story is 100% true and I can't tell you how it ends because the end hasn't come yet. But as obvious a set of actions as these may have been - CCP seems to have decided otherwise. They see a drop in activity and their response is to get rid of the old clients in favor of new. Maybe it'll work for them; maybe not.

I suppose this opens the door for a discussion of Icelandic thought processes and how they view success. I refer you too the banking collapse of 2008 as an example. They turn everything into a bubble then they pop it.

Hence why i said in months, not a specific single day out of the year....The record actually goes back to late january 2011, and hasn't been close to that mark since...

The OP has a valid point, if you think back to the whole "18 months" and the "The data does not seem to support that polished quality sells better than new features" statements the growth in subscribers has dramatically slowed down.
If you check the somewhat reliable independent reports like MMOData and Massively along with other stats it clearly shows and matches the OPs observations on PCU statistics.
Staff reviews about working conditions at CCP say CCP have unrealistic growth expectations. At one stage the amount of active subs was rapidly growing but the way CCP keep ignoring existing content in favour of introducing new half baked shinies before abandoning those in turn for the next half baked shinies is obviously not working.
So after all it would seem that the data does support polishing existing content before introducing new content after all.

Heh, according to MMOdata, EVE's subscriber total has been pretty much flat since early 2010....That's nearly 18 months without growth, so no wonder they have this manual transaction feature added with incarna....Can't get more money with polished and well developed content to attract more subs, we'll get it selling useless vanity crap then...
If they ever get really desperate for cash, then the game advantage items are brought to the market thru MT...

Since we have been discussing taking things out of context lately, you do realize the old chestnut
Quote: "The data does not seem to support that polished quality sells better than new features"
is an excerpt of a discussion about the Apocrypha expansion, which drew more new subscribers and was more popular than any other expansion at that time.
It was also, by far, the buggiest piece of crap code that CCP had ever turned out. It caused them to rework their release processes extensively, in hopes that they would never have to struggle with such a bug ridden expansion again.
Whether they have succeeded or not is up for debate, but it puts the quote somewhat more in perspective.
... not that anyone cares of course. ===== The world will not end in 2012, however there will be a serious nerf to Planetary Interaction. |

CCP has not maybe done well on last 18 months, they brought incursion and i think that is PVE patch, same was tyrannis, PVE patch, some people may have taken a break, there is lot of players who are not really interested about PVE.
But what CCP has done is incarna and dust, those are not fully taking effect yet, but next 18 months can show a major growth on player base if everything goes well.
EVE really need something more than just more systems and more ships and different kind of rats, hopefully incarna /dust are the thing.

You don't see the daily average amount of users on the login screen, so he probably lives on the side of the planet where one statistic is not the same as a completely different statistic.

That chart ends a year ago for the EVE numbers. Since then, the PCU has gone above 63k, and then down. It is now hovering in the 40û50k range again, which is basically 2009 levelsà
Also, since everyone else is posting charts, I'll post this. ùùù ôWe want to try this thing called micro-transactions, but we don't know what it is. Can anyone explainà aw screw it, let's just do it! What could go wrong?ö ù ÇÇP |
