I'm just curious if people have any feedback about EVE performance under VirtualBox? I'm going to try (again) to get EVE to run natively in Wine, but if I fail (again), I'd like to know if Vbox will net any decent performance or not.

I think the real question is if any of the virtualization systems have proper graphics support. Last I looked none (freely available) did, about a year ago

According to this, 3D support is apparently added. Does anyone have any experiences to substantiate this?

Yes, VBox does have 3D support but as the virtual video card is set to 128Mb max performance is not that good. It does work for desktop stuff but I can't see it doing games, especially EVE with CQ.

This is true, now that you mention it. That's quite a shame that it's not adjustable. I suppose I'm left with installing via Wine which has never worked for me in the past. The problem I generally have is I install it just fine, I go to run it, get the splash screen, and then it hangs with my CPU pegged. Nothing on screen. I'll post if this happens again.
Currently I'm running Mint 11 with GNOME 3, Intel GMA 4500, a Core 2 Duo, and 4GB of DDR2 RAM on my 17" HP G72. Wine is at the latest release. --- <Insert whitty signature here> |

Not entirely sure you can actually run eve with that graphics card on Linux. Intel really lacks behind with openGL support , as in .... 10 years or so ( still OGL 1.4 ) I hear there's some bleeding edge drivers for intel that actually support ... shaders. Maybe ask the Linux channel in game, pretty sure some people are more into the Intel support.
As for Virtual box, I don't see that working efficiently, as the overhead of complete virtualisation is quite a lot higher then just a translation between 2 APIs.

DRI Intel have SM2.0 support, EVE need SM3.0.
The big problem with intel is that they don't switch to Gallium3D (Unlike normal DRI drivers, with Gallium3D, if one driver get support for something, all other drivers get it in the same week). For the Intel drivers, only people working on these improve them and not a lot of new peps are interested in these as it only benefit Intel...
So Yes, Intel now have a sort of Gallium3D drivers but Intel put all his love in the DRI one so the Gallium one is so-so as the new hook that go on the Radeon/Nvidia did not get implemented in the Intel one due to lack if interest.
The best hope for Intel is that maybe it there Gallium3D drivers will get the missing hook one day and start supporting SM3... DRI drivers are totally useless and they can't support more than OpenGL 2.1. I think Intel work only on these DRI drivers because they don't want the community use there work for others drivers... Intel was the first to initally switch to Gallium3D... They backpedaled a bit after they released the Shader compiler (For the Intel drivers) who is currently used for AMD/ATI/VIA/Nvidia too thanks to Gallium3D....
