Alright, here it goes. My current character has about a month and a half worth of skills trained. These are mostly cross-training for things I'll never used (Trained Minmitar Frigates and Industrials, trained up to Cruisers in Amarr, and trained to fly a Drake), while also dumping points to become a tackler. I honestly don't want to be a tackler right now, nor do I want to fly a Drake. I wasted time training skills for ships that I can't even afford to pilot, rather than training skills that would actually be useful to me right now. I'm ready to just go ahead and start up a new character, but people have told me that I should just keep going on this one and do what I can to make it successful. Anyone mind giving their opinion on what I should do?

Starting anew gains you nothing, and loses all of the training you've already done. Even if you don't feel the skills you have trained will be immediately useful, there is no point in throwing them away. What possible benefit do you see in tossing out 1.5 months training and starting again at 0?

I for one start over as well after 3 weeks when I start, the 3 weeks is spent trying to understand what eve is and whether it is for me, of course there are bad decision, bad luck being scammed or ships blown up in missions or pirated.
When I make a new character and start a new one it really does feel like a fresh breath of wind, a new start without all the mistake and bad memories. With lesson learnt and places to go knowing that this time will be different is worth the loss of skill point.
Its not logical yes, but we are emotional creature anyway, otherwise instead of being infatuated with spaceships and playing eve, more logical if I instead spend my time to work and hang out with friends more often

There really is no point starting over, none of the skills you have trained have gone to waste since there is no "level cap" or similar thing.
Start training for things that you feel are useful to you, you will never know if you at some point need that Drake.

if you're in for the long run: keep going. life in eve tends to shift in all kind of directions. after flying armor tanks for months you might end up in an all shield alliance and are suddenly happy about all the SP you've already trained there.

The only possibly compelling reason to start over would be if you wasted your starting remaps (2 I think?) I'm not sure what is considered the optimal starting stat configuration for new players (probably something balanced minus points in Charisma) and when the right time to switch to an optimized (+10/+4 in int/mem or per/wil).
If you haven't put yourself in a hole that way, then I agree with the previous posters that suggest you not waste the SPs you already have. The ability to fly an industrial will come in handy, and you may find yourself in a PVP situation (corp war or something) where you can help out in a tackler role in the future both cheaper and more effectively than as cruiser DPS.

Even with wasting remaps, unless your attributes are really terrible there's no way you'll catch up on 1.5 months of skilltraining with a new character. Also I'm not seeing any 'wasted' skills, you're gonna need industrials no matter what you do in Eve, there are no 'tackling' specific skills, navigation skills are useful for everything and you'll need propulsion jamming as well. A cruiser III is nothing to lose sleep over and at least you have the non-racial Battlecruiser skill already. Shield skills are not wasted even on Armor ships as they simply add a little HP either way. And there are no races with exclusively armor ships, though admittedly Gallente and Amarr only have a few shield ships.
So even if you would never crosstrain again, nothing is wasted.
IMO the only good reason to start over in Eve after you have some significant amount of SP is a completely ruined reputation or being very unhappy with your character name. --- Drykor - AHARM |

Or because heĈs an ĉemotional creatureĈ
The skills you have will not be a waste for a long serving pilot and you would be foolish to throw them away

If you want to go with a new character then here's what you do: Create second account using Buddy program from your first account. In here you will create your main character for the future. Then you note when your subscription on first account runs out, and few days befor that you activate your second account using Credit Card you used for your first account. Then you take the bonus Plex card you get on your first account( from the Buddy program), turn it in to isk and send them to your second account. You cancel your first account befor they bill you.
This would be a good start for your new character. You dont spend extra Real Life money on it, but you get 360 mil isk as a starting bonus. Please correct me if i am wrong on this one.

When creating new character: 1) Choose only 1 race. Do not mix-max or you will regreat it later. 2) If you are staying in High Sec and plan on doing missions then train for Battleships for lvl 4 missions. 3) If you want to go to 0.0 sec Alliance, you will need either Drake or Hurricane. People are crazy about them there. Plan to be abel to fly them. 4) So you dont waist alote of skill points in the future when picking a Race: Amarr: Armor Tank, Lasers Caldari: Active/Passive Shield Tank ; EWAR, Missiles(Dont waiste your SP on Hybrid weapons) Gallante: Armor Tank; Drones; Hybrid weapons. Minmatar: Active Armor and Shield Tank. Projectiles. 5) A really good idea to be abel to use T2 weapons for what ever race you choose. 6) If you going for T2 ships, start with Cruisers - its around 17-20 days training, but it will give you also access to fly T3 ships in the future.

In the very long run you usually end up training everything anyway, so I wouldn't do it unless you really really hate the character name or wanted to change to another faction for roleplaying (heh).

Alright everyone, thanks for the help. I guess I remembered my skills being worse than they actually were, but now that I actually got a chance to sit down and look over it all, they're really not that bad. I just thought that Cross-training so much so soon was a bit of a waste, but I can see why it might help later on. Seeing how many level 4-5 skills I already have, it really wouldn't be worth it to start again. It sounds stupid, but I never even finished the tutorial missions to begin with, so now I'm going through those and earning a lot of tips and experience on how I want to build my character.

a player that doesnt want to fly a drake??!? *claps* Training indys is a good thing actually. Hauling stuff for your corp is a good way to show you want to help the corp out. What race and/or profession appeals to you the most?

You will enjoy eve alot more if you just save up some money and go on the char bazaar and buy a 100 mil + sp char thats already done for you.
None of that ******ed waiting on training time which everyone seems to love.

I'd like to be ahead of myself in Any skills by a month and a half. O_O even if it was refining on my pvp char.

When I made my first character, I was trained minmatar almost up to battlecruiser class. when I decided to switch over to Caldari to be an ECM pilot (Pre-Falcon nerf) I just rerolled Caldari and started going that way. If you're just unhappy with your character, remake; EVE isn't a race to the level cap anyway. Personally, I'd never crosstrain early unless I just wanted a specific race character and didn't want to fly their native ships.

I have a 20+ mil SP combat character who has skills all over the map. Went to T2 Large guns and reppers, then realized I hated missions. Then realized I didn't have isk to fly the bigger ships in PvP, then started to crosstrain into...well all races. Now I kind of just want to sell him, get a few bil isk, and start over with a specialized pilot who won't have to worry about making money. Choices choices

You lose nothing from having skills you don't use (well currently at least). You do however lose time if you start again and find yourself needing to retrain those skills again. Ships such as Drakes will become eminently more affordable to you as you develop and progress in EVE, even though it can seem like gaining ISK is a struggle at first.
If you really want a new character, perhaps if you don't associate with your current one, want a better name or want a fresh start from building a social group in game, then you could always stop your training on your current one and start a new character on a free slot. You'll be surprise how even an untrained character on a spare slot will come in useless, either providing an anonymous recon during war decs or sitting in Jita to give you price comparisons.

There really is no such thing as a useless skill in Eve. Except the mining skills, but it seems you didn't train any of those.
I have trained skills that I never use, but that I know could become useful at some point in time. For instance, I have some basic ewar skills because ewar can be useful. I don't really want to fly ewar, nor have I ever tried it, but if the chance comes up where a cheap black bird is useful, I can do it.
Minmatar Spaceship Command is not useless, not by a long shot. Amarr can be useful. Tackle can be useful, if you find yourself as the only one capable of flying tackle, you will be glad you did this. Drake is very useful for a lot of things. None of these sound useless.
My advice is don't start over, some of your skills are going to be core skills, you can always find use for electronics and engineering skills. Don't start over and re-grind these.
It's easy to branch out too much in Eve, but since you've got a good foothold, pick the skills that are most useful to you in the short term and concentrate on them. Especially any skills that are prerequisites, grind these to 5 ASAP so you can move on to the skills they unlock.

Some of the most useless skills other than mining ones also include but are not limited to hybrids and caldari capitals.
