Um, yeah, I think I'm gonna have to sell my earbuds @ $18 bucks a piece and my Max's severed head.
This is absolutely insane though, not only is Valve not getting a cut of any of the transactions, they're just letting it run rampant. WHO THE HELL HAS THIS KIND OF MONEY TO BLOW ON HATS IN A FOUR YEAR OLD GAME?

That some would have so much to buy a virtual hat for $1500 while others wonder where their next rent payment comes from makes me feel that there is justification for real-world piracy.

Depends, I'd argue a lot of people who can't pay rent aren't that well educated and basically spend their youth partying. That's what I see around me though.
Not me anyway, uni next year for Physics and astronomy education which will last 7-10 years :P Who knows I might end up working for some top secret government weapon projects. Sad they nicked the rail-gun development though. :(

You forgot to highlight the second part of that sentence. That's based on what I see around me. If you're highly educated and motivated it's not hard to get a decent job. The only people I see struggling are those with basic high-school degrees. ------ http://img20.imageshack.us/img20/4441/evesigr.jpg

You might be well educated but right now your just a kid with no experience of real life. There are some things no amount of reading or studying can teach you.
Come back here and say that once you've left uni and actualy got some experience of life.

Kid is a bit mislabel considering I'm 23. I've had quite some experience already (hence why I'm finishing my high-school degree now and following it with uni).
I'll agree there are certain situations that can make it hard, such as health issues, age or single parents (though why one has children with someone that will eventually leave you is beyond me. Unless the spouse died.) But there are services out there that help with those issues financially. I would argue that if you are in such financial need that playing games isn't the exact thing you should be doing, if anything at least buying MT stuff should be the least of your worries.
I admit there are situations I'm not thinking of right now, perhaps you could enlighten me? ------ http://img20.imageshack.us/img20/4441/evesigr.jpg

You can't get much more crass than saying that if someone has a low paying job, it's his own fault because he choose not to go to college. For many people, college is not a choice. Going to college requires money. Yes, there are student loans and things like that, but it's much easier to succeed in college if you don't have to worry about how the whole thing is going to be financed.
The class divisions start before you even start high school. Low income families live in neighborhoods that aren't very respectable. A child raised by low income parents is forced to attend grade schools with lower resources and a poorer reputation than a child born into a wealthy family. You can be damned before you even consider whether or not you would like to go to college or what sort of a job you would like to have.
The whole "equal opportunity" concept in modern societies is a bunch of worthless propaganda that exists to placate people into thinking that they have equal footing with their peers. If poverty is the fault of the pauper, then there's no reason to complain and no reason to change the system. Our modern society exists because it is a system that discourages any real form of revolution by giving people lollipops and telling them that everything is okay. You could say it's a sort of steady state that social systems can drift into over time.

Now your having a go at single mothers too? This quote speaks volumes about your naivety, unfortunately it's just not that easy to screen people for personality defects, you can know someone for years and still not know what he's capable of until you put him in that situation.
Can I ask who's paying for your prolonged education? You either have wealthy parents or you've managed to find some very well paid part-time work. I'm lucky enough to have a job and afford to play computer games but I don't think you realise just how difficult todayÆs job climate really is.
Sorry if I'm sounding pessimistic, I'm all for having dreams and aspirations but branding everyone who can't afford a 1500$ virtual hat as lazy and stupid is just ludicrous.
