"Atlantis blasts off..." and there concludes the US's manned space flight program. Why? Because it's "too expensive". It has nothing to do with being so profitable that our "leaders" are eager to cut it up and sell it off to the commercial sector. Which of course, once that happens it will cease to be the US space program in favor of the Chinese space program since they will be the lowest bidder, always. God dam* our politicians! |

Well it IS the size of an Inty.
I guess the penny is going to drop sometime this evening that If America wants a man in space they have to ask Russia nicely and pay handsomely. I have a feeling Nasa's going to have a manned space program sooner than they think, when people fully realize the situation. |

Exactly..the US spends less than 1/2 a cent per tax dollar on the space program, but manages to spend 30 cents on defense. That in itself is a crime as far as I am concerned. |

Sigh, I grew up watching the shuttle launches and watched the Challenger and Columbia Disasters.
Between that and Star Wars the dream of space and space travel was definitely implanted.
Now all I can do is hope somebody is still looking up.

It's also the end of the US's premier heavy lift program as well. Orion, the next generation heavy lift vehicle, was canceled a week before it's first and last test flight which by all accounts was a resounding success. This is indeed a sad, sad day even if many people don't realize it. |

Your faith, even in Fox's need to create false outrage, is misplaced. Everyone with a brain knows what's happening to our space program. The media hasn't even objectively analyzed what it means for us to have a stated and planned decade long lapse in manned space flight. It means our space program is over. And yet, the media wants to talk romantically about touristic space flight which, imo, is the biggest joke of all. |

Unfortunately, we do live in ass backwards times. Not in an age of discovery when the first man landed on the moon, but more of an age of bull****.
However, keep in mind that NASA is still the highest funded space program in the world (17.6b) per year. Compare that to the next highest budget of 5.6b a year for the European Space Agency.
So, while NASA has had it's budget cut year after year, they're still the top funded program. And Obama has pledged to increase NASA's budget by 6b over the next 5 years and they plan to have a heavy launch vehicle designed by 2015. So it's not like NASA is going away anytime soon.
Just wanted to add a bit of levity to the speculation with some actual facts ;) |

Fox just like Politicians are now focused on any and all research stating it is money wasted. Hoping they look like they are doing something by going after programs that have little corporate support.
The fact of the matter is they are going after programs that are pure research that companies wouldn't invest in because is doesn't show a profit.
The best part is they are claiming OMG they are wasting blah blah blah money. Okay you are complaining about a research project that if you cut is the equivalent of 1 penny on my 30 year mortgage.
Why don't you deal with that section that eats up over 60%(hello this is a problem) of the US budget every year, or the one that eats up 25%(this is the military one).
I don't know about you but that tends to get my attention a lot more then the a penny spent on NASA.

This was planned before Obama.
Anyway... the current shuttle program wasn't designed to run this long anyway.. It's antiquated, expensive, and dangerous with very little room for error. It allows for very little to get done in any decent amount of time with it's minimal ability to supply/construct/launch from space. I'll miss it, but it's a relic that is well beyond it's time.
(personally I have an issue with the worlds facination of improving current tech rather than focusing on creating whole new technology, and believe it's a factor in issues like this but that's a very long drawn out discussion for another place and time)
I don't doubt that there's an idea in the pipe regarding a next gen launch system... Whether any of us will be around when it comes about, anybodies guess. Unless some need or new resource can be found I don't think there will be any big rush for the new launch system. |

Edited by: Mr Kidd on 08/07/2011 16:37:30 NASA is a profitable investment. The link is to Wikipedia. However, I had researched NASA's profitability years ago for a macro economics class. What is stated in that wiki is pretty much along the lines of my conclusions that NASA provides far more benefits both tangible and intangible than it costs to fund.
The problem for politicians is not gaining immediate access to those profits to spend other places. They're interested only in short term gains and to hell if they ruin our future.
So Fox news can go f**k itself. Americans need to wake up. Mainstream media outlets are not the friends of the people. They are merely a mouthpeice for government propaganda with the occasional sacrificial lambs (the Spitzers and the Weiners) to disguise themselves as independent. |

Yes, because anytime the media bullhorns public policy that directly contradicts facts it's a keen indicator of independence. And God knows they do it quite often. As a sane and good citizen we're supposed to conveniently ignore those happenstances as if everything is for our own good. |

It is true that the shuttle was not designed to last forever. Projects like Venture Star were designed to replace it. However the technology just wasn't there, (question is it now) ?
What concerns me is with those failures there was lack of direction to find the answer. It is fine to stand back and say we have a commitment to the space station so we are going to use existing tech to complete it so we can move forward.
BUT what was not done was research projects to find new ways to getting large payloads to space. Instead everything was focused on visible results, and if a project failed it was labeled a waste of money. Failed projects are not wastes of money (within reason you have to have a purpose behind the project). That is why they are called research. When people try things out of the box sometimes you get an interesting result and sometimes not.
What I expect is the government (I am paying them and I am not alone) to fund these projects so that when the time comes to build that ship we have something more to go on then using the kerosine burning engines from the Saturn V. |
