I'm wanting to learn more about all the different types of repairing your own personal ship, not so much repairing others but just your own. I'm somewhat familiar with shield repair options but clueless to repairing anything else. What are best options solo? What skills outside Repairing system can help repair?

You can train for armour rigs which will boost your armour repairers but skills in shields and mechanics will also reduce damage taken. Depends on what ships you are flying and determine whether they're more suited to boost armour or shields.

I'm assuming you're referring to shield boosters and local armor reps. This is what we call tanking. Generally a ship is designed to do either shield or armor and it varies by ship type. Ships where mid slots > low slots usually shield tank. Ships where low > med usually armor tank. Ships which are equal mids & lows can do either reasonably well. Racially, Amarr = Armor, Caldari = Shield, Gallente = Armor, Minmatar = either.. There are numerous exceptions though.
With tanking, you have a rep (unless you're passive/buffer) and you try to get your resistances as high as possible.
Skills.. shield generally all fall under engineering category. Armor are all under mechanic. The capacitor skills are also very important.

I would like to point out that even though Galente have several ships that have an armor repair bonus, and Minmatar have several ships that have a shield boost bonus rest of their lineup can go either way, with a slight tendency towards armor for Galente and shield for Minmatar. _______________________ The best thing in EvE is Barrage M. |

Edited by: Toshiro GreyHawk on 11/07/2011 09:11:09 Taking a slightly different tack to answer the question:
1) For Shields - you have the option of having an active or passive tank. The active tank is mostly associated with the Shield Booster Module while the Passive tank relies on the amount of the shield to regenerate itself. The more shield a ship has the more shielding regenerates in the same amount of time. That is to say - however much of a shield a ship has - it all will regenerate in a certain amount of time - thus - the more of it you have the more of it will regenerate in the same amount of time.
Skills which affect this are:
Shield Management - gives your ship more shield to start with Shield Operation - gives your shield a faster regen time Shield Compensation - less cap for shield boosters Tactical Shield Manipulation - (required for shield hardeners) reduces bleed through to armor during last 25% of shield. EM, Thermal, Kinetic and Explosive Compensation - allows use of shield hardeners which increase the resistance of the shield to their respective type of damage - but only work with certain modules or modules in certain modes.
Shield Modules
Shield Rigs
2) Armor uses the Armor Modules and Armor Rigs. Your EM, Thermal, Kinetic and Explosive Armor Compensation skills increase your resistance to those types of Armor damage for certain modules.
Armor repair requires the Repair Systems Skill. Armor rigs require the Armor Rigging
The Hull Upgrades Skill increases your ships base Armor Hit points.
3) Hull Repair uses Hull Repairers, requires the same Repair Systems Skill as Armor.
The Mechanic Skill increases your base Structure hit points.
Most ships either tank armor or shields but some Hull Tank. Hull Tankers are mostly ships that have a lot of structure hit points - like an Orca.
Even shield tankers should train basic armor skills as armor tankers should train basic shield skills. You don't have to get into the compensation skills but the basics will give you more of what you've got to start with. This also allows you to repair your own armor and hull - instead of paying a station to do it.
Remote Hull and Armor Skills - allow you to repair your own drones.
This is just a superficial glance at what's involved - look to a comprehensive tanking guide for more details.
I used the one Mara linked but there's one in the Player Guide on Tanking as well.
