I'm a newb I'll be the first to admit it. I mostly mine and run missions when I get bored. But for that, I want to get in to fleet combat. Now I now that's a silly thing when the majority of my SP is devoted to Industry but, I've managed to sc**** together a fair bit in the combat department. My question is with my little frigate. An Incursus or a Fatman (Tristan) without the aid of most of the tier II goodness should I give up on this or just go for it? And if the go for it where is a good place to start?

Check out Red vs Blue. Good place to practice your pvp with very cheap fits.

Edited by: VKhaun Vex on 14/07/2011 08:02:18 The Punisher and Rifter are generally the T1's that people look to for PvP that I've read about on the forums. Rifter being projectiles makes it easier on cap, it's faster, and has the extra mid slot for utility (AB/Scram/Web?). The punisher lacks the extras and will test your capacitor skills, but it is still a very mean frigate.
You said you've been mining and mention Gallente ships... have you done drone skills more then guns? How fat is your wallet? The Worm has low requirements to fly (Gallente Frig3 + Caldari Frig3), and fields a full set of light drones along with missiles that come with full bonus without training anything to lv5. It also has a very generous slot layout compared to any T1. Though it's rather pricey, it's unique setup warrants mentioning IMO. You could look into that.

This is something I used ages ago :
[Incursus, Taranis Trainer] Damage Control II Overdrive Injector System II
1MN MicroWarpdrive I X5 Prototype I Engine Enervator J5b Phased Prototype Warp Scrambler I
Light Ion Blaster II, Null S Light Ion Blaster II, Null S Light Ion Blaster II, Null S
Small Hybrid Burst Aerator I Small Hybrid Collision Accelerator I [empty rig slot]
Warrior II x1
Shouldn't take you much more than a week to get into that. I found it quite fun but that was a while back.

Edited by: Sir Hillary on 14/07/2011 13:32:31 Here's the throwaway fit that I use. Upgrade to t2 when you're comfortable, but this is cheap enough to not worry about getting it blown up while you get used to flying in PvP, but also not rubbish. If I'm throwing myself into a situation where flying away in a pod is a likely outcome, this is usually what I'll be in.
[Rifter, Almost Certain Death] Emergency Damage Control I 200mm Reinforced Rolled Tungsten Plates I Small 'Accomodation' Vestment Reconstructor I

I second this fit.
Though I wouldn't recommend the rigs for newer players (and if I was flying it myself I'd probably just have one Polycarbon on there). And I'd suggest sticking with Damage Control 1s until you can go straight to DC2, the named ones are crazy expensive in my experience. It's still a very solid build though, and easy to get into and do well with.

You are never too new for pvp.
You are never too new for pvp.
You are never too new for pvp.
I said it three times because its important. Experience in this game is more important than the ship you can fly and the skillpoints you have. While learning you will lose alot of the time, but that experience of combat will set you up for the future and result in fever comedy lossmails when you can fly the shinny stuff.

Always go for it, PvP is the best thing about Eve.

A tristan with 2 blasters and 2 missile bays can do very well in frigate PvP. I actually got pounded by a tristan just the other day flying a rifter... |

Gallente FLEET combat, you say?
Other have posted fits for solo PvP (although they work for fleets as well in a general sense). In a fleet though, you're generally in one of the following roles: Damage, EWar, Tackle, or Logistics. The Damage guys rely on the Tackle guys to keep targets pinned down, and everyone relies on the EWar guys and Logistics to stay alive.
Newer people are generally "disposable tackle" in a fleet. Grab some T1 frigates, put a warp disruptor (the long point) and a microwarp drive on them, then a damage control and/or a shield extender. Stay alive as long as possible while holding people in place. Practice keeping a point on someone but not getting too close (12km), which will put you in web range. This is good training for real interceptors later on. The Atron will be great for this, although the Incursus or Tristan can kind of work as well.
People say that a medium shield extender on an interceptor is heresy, but T1 frigates don't get the same signature radius bonuses that true inties do. When you're already at 250+, a little more won't make a difference - but the additional buffer will!
You could also go the EWar route. ECM is a game changer in a lot of fights, but ECM ships like to sit at range - and that is where the lowly Maulus can be an incredible asset to your fleet. Fit some sensor damps with targeting range scripts, and when the enemy ECM (or other long-range ships) appear on the field, nuke their targeting range. They can't jam what they can't target, and no ECM ship has a great tank so they're sure as hell not going to get close to the damage dealing ships. Your fleet will love you. One ECM ship can disable 3-4 ships at once in your fleet, but a Maulus can handle 2-3 ECM ships. Consider Ionic Field Projector rigs to increase your targeting range. They're cheap.
You can also fit an Incursus for raw damage. The DPS on a highly skilled Incursus pilot can be pretty awesome but, in a frigate, you're likely more useful as tackle or EWar.
I know that was more generalizations than anything else, but every fleet is different and every FC has different preferences about what they might want you to bring at any given time. Fights are very situational. Expect to die a lot flying T1 frigates, but hell, they're cheap. Who cares? Go have fun.

Thirding this one. It's also well worth training up the skills to overheat. Named modules last a fair bit from heating and it boost your performance immensely.

Seriously, there's no reason to cross-train for a t1 frigate. Gallente and Caldari have very scary frigates so stick with your Incursus/Tristan.
Just buy 20 ships with t1 fits and LOSE them.

The incursus is pretty awesome - forget tank - just fit damage. I recently started pvp myself and the incursus spanked my rifter hard.
Good fun all round. Get atleast T2 guns.

I am going to suggest you don't fly the Incursus because it is often called primary in RvB straight away. High damage, low tank. Easy decision.
Instead take the fellow's advice who suggested you train the Punisher. You'll survive longer in the furballs, which means you experience more. If learning is the goal.
