CCP, in their latest Dev blog, has stated that Local chat will be replaced with a "new intelligence tool."
Depending on how this is implemented, this could either make EVE way more fun, or completely break the game. NOTE, CCP has said that they are not going to "remove" local entirely.
How do YOU want to see Local changed?

Dude stays there when he logs off for awhile, and doesn't immediatly reappears when he logs back in. If he uses a gate his status will immediatly update, be him entering or leaving a system.

If this is coming in the winter expansion, and the CSM minutes say it is, CCP already has a design they are thinking of implementing. CCP Zulu has been wanting to do this for at least 3 years, and many other devs posted their thoughts on possible implementation philosophy.
Hopefully a devblog is incoming shortly so we can see and discuss. ... Return the Old Hangar Back... for Immersion.

High Sec pretty much the same as it is now.. concord reporting would keep everyone in local that they have verified entering the system (that is still online).
For low sec, people uncloaked appear in local - ship transponders will keep uncloaked showing. Cloaked do not show unless they chat or decloak while the recipient is on the same grid.
null sec..no one shows unless they chat.

Edited by: Andreus Ixiris on 12/07/2011 18:23:43 Delayed local as in wormhole space.
Players are given advance warning when any warp signature is detected within a single AU of their location. They are given no indication as to which or how many ships are present, where or in which direction they are going, or who they belong to - just that someone is warping within an AU of their location. Modules can be fitted that provide more information on nearby warp signatures.
All players, at any time, have the option in a right-click drop-down menu of any other player's ship, "Flag to Local". This causes the target to instantly appear in local. Flagging in local does not count as aggression and a flagged player is not given an indication of who it was that flagged them. ----- Andreus Ixiris CEO, Mixed Metaphor

Assuming it doesn't break anything else horribly, if the new system makes it much harder to bot profitably it will be good. If it doesn't accomplish that, then it is useless.
If it were up to me, I'd make the simple change of making local like any other chat window. If you have it open, you can see who's chosen to be in it and they can see you. If you have it closed, you can't see who's chosen to be in it and they can't see you.
But that would take at least a couple hours of programming and the resources just aren't there.

The Devblog also hinted that you could upgrade your space for better security intel. High sec would probably come "upgraded" and lowsec would have varying degrees of it.
All in all I welcome a 'local as intel' change. Get rid of some of the botters if nothing else.

To populate local, you have to DScan the system upon entry (empire space only). Everyone in the system uncloaked will appear in local, as will you.
Repeated scans will refresh.
Talking in local automatically shows you for everyone.

They sound like they will be using the idea that I and others have been peddling: - Defaults to delayed/semi-delayed - Owner gets access to upgrades to increase data/intelligence.
As long as they can find a way to improve scanning tools to prevent button mashing and make intelligence upgrades an actual choice (ie. conflicts with XX) as opposed to a 'must have', there is no better solution.
Actually a good idea to keep local as a chat and move all data into a separate channel the output of which can then be manipulated by skills/hulls/modules/upgrades. An extreme measure to be sure which is why no one has suggested that solution before I reckon .. guess CCP do care about our pet peeves as well.
I'll sit back and watch as they implement more of the things I have suggested and supported to improve null, and one day I may make a triumphant return to the wet sands (because of Peeeeeee!) of zerozero.

It just means that they should appear into the local just as they are now. Chasing a cloaked ships its TOO Difficult. But knowing that theres one cloaked ships makes you think smart. Act smart. Talk smart. What would happen if cloaked people just disappeared from local? MAYHEM. Please re-size your signature to the maximum allowed of 400 x 120 pixels with a maximum file size of 24000 bytes. That would really depend on the new intel tools that CCP Zulu alluded to.
So, a more balanced cloak plus some useful intel/scanning/whatever tool could make the Delayed Local possible without breaking the game. ... Return the Old Hangar Back... for Immersion.

I vote for a sov upgrade
If you install the upgrade on that system, that local chat will be automatically updated. No upgrade? WH style chat.
This rule do not apllies to NPC systems, which are already controleed by it's factions.

Would be cool to see local based off your scanner.
All ships on scan show in local...
Scan updated every 30 seconds or when player presses scan(then 10 seconds later). Recons stealthed up would not show Ship far far away would not show.
Minor change that ships in POS shield do not show on scanner.
So abushes in big systems possible, stealth ships are stealthy... Not instant intel when a fleet jumps in...take a moment for the other fleet to notice. ______ Hello WoW players. Look at your toon, now back to me. Sadly it isn't me, but if it wasn't simplistic pre scripted linear mono dimensional game you could look like me. I'm in a Paladin |

When ever anyone enters or leaves the system flash message that says either "A ship has entered the system" or "A ship has left the system."
Otherwise use worm whole chat mechanics.
The reason is that being forced to constantly scan when you are ratting is so tedious that its not worth playing. Ans since the huntes obviously know to scan a system when they enter the targets should also know.
Wherever you went - Here you are.

This. Don't see any flaw from a gameplay perspective, has a fine in-game explanation, spices things up without being too complex or taking much-needed functionality.
The only additional thought I have is: Could we treat neutrals and hostiles different than friendlies? People with good standings, who are in the same squad or same fleet probably should see each other. Explain it with an encrypted transponder code, and you are good.

well. Its quite simple IMO. Just add the obligatory radar which every other scifi story has.
the minimal intel should be a few dots on a sphere if someone is in your grid. All further "intel levels" can build on top of it. E.g red vs blue dots, aprox distance, warp-in alarm, update interval (skill based?), even mass would be a cool feature.
very simple and fun to use, no excel sheet, doesn't need 30% of the screen + extendable via skills/suv structures/ship modules/whatever.

More like anyone who lives in null, not just botters.
Interdiction Nullified Cloaky T3s and Falcons say W-space local in nullsec will kill off PvE in null completely, no amount of d-scan watching will protect you from a cloaky ganker if you dont know hes in system.

What I think would be awesome is have it show x amount in local, but only show who is in local if they talk.
This only in null. I think Empire space should stay the same.

It's all about implementation,
one of the roundtables with devs a while back was, making local chat / intel based on sov upgrades. LIKe level 1, you get access to regional chat and can use it to see who is in the region, the constellation and in the max upgrade you get local.

I like ship scanner populates a list, maybe even a serious upgrade to the onboard scanner that places the pilot and the ship into a targetable list and it just refreshes itself at a certain proximity at say 25% (3-5AU) leaving the focused( <30 degree) directional at 14AU or longer. If we need a nerf bat for cloakies the proximity sensor would go off if something warps in grid with you but doesn't tell you what or who. Although to be honest most of the 'cloakies' are made of paper and be obilterated if the ratter would just fire back and have a proper tank.
