Edited by: Major Phaser on 16/07/2011 00:11:28 Edited by: Major Phaser on 16/07/2011 00:10:36 I am a student studying my honours year in Psychology. I am required to do a thesis as part of this study and I am seeking people to participate in a survey for my thesis.
Purpose of the study The purpose of this study is to examine relationships and online game playing behaviours. It is being conducted as part of the requirements for my Bachelor Psychology degree at the Central Queensland University under the supervision of Dr Phillip Donaldson.
What is involved Participants are asked to fill out an online questionnaire which will be accessed by following a link to the host site with Survey Monkey. The questionnaire asks for demographic information, descriptions of game playing behaviour and an indication of how strongly the participant agrees to a series of statements about game playing and relationships. This will take approximately 5 - 10 minutes.
I would be very grateful if you would take the time to follow this link and complete the Survey.

Edited by: Arch Osis on 16/07/2011 05:11:48 Edited by: Arch Osis on 16/07/2011 05:09:10 Man this is the wrong game to be doing surveys. All your going to get are people looking to grief you or stab you in the back somehow... because thats what this game is. Eve gamers are different than other gamers. You should start back at the top where the genre makes a huge difference. Your talking about mixing all gaming behaviors? That means you need to include other mmos , console games , sports games , adventure games etc...Have you ever herd of mud games? Theres many different types of games out there and they all have their uniqueness. Some online games dont even have communication features... Remember, some games are played more than others and this may skew your results.

I'm not doing a poorly designed survey, e.g. "6. Do the people you live with play MMORPGs? Yes / No". I live alone, so where is the 'N/A' or 'I live alone' option? -- The Door! |

This counts as scientific at your university?
My professor would have ripped my head off (verbal violence only) and told me that I should have been:
1. less time partying 2. less time drinking 3. less time sleeping 4. more attending lectures 5. that I shouldn't have even bothered to take that excuse of a survey to her.

Ok I'll bite :) First off, do you actually play MMOs? Secondly, I am not sure that you understand what you are (presumable) required to do for your assignment. Escaped Gobbo from Warhammer |

I did your survey.
First, why do you want to know whether my birthday falls on an odd or even day?
Second, why did I feel like you were assuming I'd hold more importance to online friends, than I would real life friends?
Regardless, taken and submitted. And if you're reading this, you've fallen into a signature trap. You owe me 1m ISK. |

The survey could've been better, but I have seen worse.
Originally by: Dante Marcellus First, why do you want to know whether my birthday falls on an odd or even day?
For the randomisation. Of course, doing it this way means there will be slightly more people in one group than the other (more birthdays fall on an odd day because there are more odd days).
OP, I'd love to see some background on / support for the claim "the negative portrayal in the media about the impact of playing MMORPGs on relationships with family and friends." Is there such negative portrayal? Does it outweigh any positive portrayal? In which media and with which target audiences?

Thank you to everyone who has replied so far, keep it coming.
I see that a number of you are strong thinkers, you make some interesting points.
This survey is already being run across multiple MMOs for some of the reasons that you mention.
Thanks for your support.

I have filled my share of troll surveys. But this is worst made troll survey yet ! Little effort was put into it to even look legit.
Unless ofcourse your 15, have yet to kiss a boy and have trouble coming out if the closet which gives you discomfort and ultimetly affects your rational train of thought.
In case your really are seeking future in Psychology, God help your patients. Survey was amateur made with silly presumtion that I live in a baement isolated from the world and my best friend is person from other part of the world that met in game and comunicate with him in game and / or over VOIP / IRC means.
Im afraid you lack fundemental knowledge of MMO genre as such thusly made poor survey simply because your mentor asked it of you. You lack work ethcics to put any real effort into given task. In other words yome day you will be a poor employee at best.

Your survey is fundamentally flawed, and there is no way that respondent can actually answer your questions in a meaningful way. MMO gamers are not sad lonely gits who can't communicate, or establish trust or relationships. I have seen, and filled in, dozens of surveys of this nature. Please drop the premise, it wonÆt get you good marks (and I would fail you immediately). Incidentally, I have been playing games since 1979, and MMOs since 2003, and extensively played Dark Age of Camelot, World of Warcraft, Lord of the Ring Online, Warhammer Online, and of course EVE. I also have an honours degree in Psychology from the Open University. So I feel that I have a tad of expertise in this area. First off, EVE players are not your typical MMO player. The game is quite different to ôtypicalö MMO games. Think comparing Chess players with Snakes and Ladder players. So, letÆs consider some worthwhile studies. EVE players are well educated. It would be fairly easy to establish what ôaverageö education has been generally achieved by a population (although MMOs cross many countries and education varies considerably by country). EVE players are male. EVE, even by MMO standards, has a very low female player base. What is it that either attracts (or puts off) female gamers to EVE. EVE has a real bunch of bastards. Most MMO game mechanism donÆt allow ôgriefingö, EVE positively revels in scams, ganking, grooming and all sorts of negative behaviour that is just not found in other MMOs. I could write a doctorate on this. Finally, in MMOs, when you log off, you cease to exist. The only thing that remains, is the memory of you, your actions, and what you achieve in the game, in other players. Quite clearly this parallels the human condition of a good life; in the end, possession are irreverent, all that is important is the lives that your have touched (and the memory that remains). Again, a massive area for investigations. Finally, I am trying to help you here, please avoid rubbish like you have done; and I would suggest that you ômodelö (try out) your questions on friend first, and get their feedback on how they found answering your questions. Also avoid romantic relationship questions, most gamers are in relationships and not really looking for that in a game (although it does happen, and one player was very keen to explore S&M role playing with my wifeÆs toon Mistress Terrify).
Good points.
@ OP Honestly, what kind of advisor do you have? Has he even looked at your survey? Granted it's undergraduate work, so it doesn't need to be especially original, but more properly fitted to the category your claiming to inquire about would definitely benefit you.
Also, nm do you play Eve - do you play MMOs at all?
And Eve should definitely be considered not the norm.

i always thought that a masters thesis had to be somewhat original (i know its not a phd but still) this survey is a dime in a dozen and a bad one at that.
i could probably tell you most of the conclusions you are likely to make from this survey but then i wouldn't want to spoil the 5 min of work your gonna spend on this thesis for you
*making mental note* next time i choose a thesis subject i should pick something that takes 5 minutes, rather then something that actually takes effort, i could play more eve that way

Well, no mention of ISK trade, and the few times an mmorpg was named used WoW, so at least it appears to be a legit survey, which is uncommon.
Notes on the survey, with some thoughts behind it: Definitely get the feel that its a psychological assessment of guild, clan, and corp member bonds versus real life people bonds. Too bad it, through specifically stating that they must be online only, severely limited my answer base. Most of my closest friends online have become friends offline as well. Including a handful that are a long distance away. For instance, a group of six players all scattered around the area of my hometown, which is over a thousand miles away, whom I've gone to meet a few times while visiting family. As I live in a popular vacation destination, I've had many many more online friends come and visit me here, and routinely see them during vacation months. Though I got the strong feeling that the survey is to assess friendship bonds with them online, because they are also friends offline, they are ruled out from the survey by the rules. -Felyza

This is a problem with academic research like this - it tends to put people in boxes and the boxes often don't keep up with social developments.

To be honest, this survey is really bad. The questions are far too general, and answering on the basis of one of your friends, thats beyond subjective. I know some pretty disconnected people who think highly of themselves and their friends, but theres no way to seperate these people from the others. Like mentioned above, the responses are too boxed.
I know theres plenty of people who want to say, "Look, gamers aren't nerdy young guys who can't interact with women", but if you want to say that, do a more objective survey at least. Even the demographic data was light.
