I've quit jobs I've had over the years six times in order to go to FanFest, or do Alliance Tournaments when holidays have been refused by companies I've worked for. Four of the six times they have called me up when I've gotten home and sheepishly asked me if I'll come back to work.
Coupled with that, I met and got together with the most awesome woman in the world playing Eve, who's a hardcore gamer, is gorgeous, kicks ass and has an awesome sense of humour.
I've also had the opportunity to meet epic people, get involved with epic projects and organise awesome Eve player gatherings in London, one of which is occuring next week and has a 150+ attendance list plus a dozen devs showing up.
Eve has also given me an appreciation of foreign culture, let me see the world from hundreds of different perspectives, opened my eyes to differences in custom from country to country and proved to me that Iceland is the most awesome country on Earth.
When I started playing Eve I was 18 years old and was a shy, quiet engineering student who wouldn't even consider speaking out with opinion and was scared to even make a presentation in front of ten fellow trainees.
A little under 10 years later I've been on stage in front of thousands of people at multiple FanFests, as well as being watched on webcast by tens of thousands. I've been a part of live broadcasts watched by tens of thousands when working on Eve-TV and have hosted player gatherings and stood up and spoke in front of hundreds of people in the same room.
I can't even remember how many countries I've flown and driven to, organising and attending player gatherings and getting to know Eve players.
Eve has had a massive positive influence on my life, and the only way you let your life get destroyed by any video game is if you're too thick headed and bone idle to keep control of it, take care of yourself, do things right and make the right calls at the right time.
In these cases it's not the game that's to blame, it's the lethargic, lazy, thick skulled idiot behind the keyboard and/or controller.
