I was just napping, and my brain foggily thought about this.
What would be the ramifications if a scrammed ship could not use a jumpgate? If you are in 0.0 right now you cannot use a jumpbridge. (scrammed, but disrupted I believe).
But what happen to PvP if a warp scrambler (not the disruptor) negated the ability to use a jump gate in all space?
Would this just benefit the pirates too much to make it a concept worth exploring?

At one time I head talk of having scrams stop docking AND letting you look at what is outside the station before undocking. So there would be two changes to provide balance. In this case the two changes were to put an end to docking games.
So if scrams stopped jumping, what would be a balancing change?

Wouldn't it break immersion though?
Shutting down a warp drive shouldn't affect docking or jumping thru a gate, as neither of those actions require the use of a warp drive. It just wouldn't be consistent with common sense.

Edited by: Syna Atruin on 18/07/2011 23:46:32 The problem with your idea is that the Gate is jumping them. They are not jumping themselves. So.....
Have a HIC with targeted infinite point on the gate disrupt ALL out going traffic?
I still think its a bad idea, we allready have bubbles, but it is an interesting one. Would be interesting to see it on sisi. |

I'm just going to point out that EvE does 0 for immersion IMO asides from making space about as boring as space probably really is. My drones appear out of nowhere, my hyperion is 4x longer than my drake but both are the same number of meters long, my smallest ships hold more drones than my biggest ships, a kronos has the sensor strength of radar in WW2, I can bump huge ships with small ships and send them flying away and nobody gets hurt, I can't mine moons in wormholes just because, I can't launch bombs in lowsec but a sueprcarrier can have the dps of a battleship fleet there no problems. Apparently my ships has a crew, you can't mount things on freighters and if you don't do pvp EvE is not a game but an alternative process to drooling on yourself because the industry system is more boring than real industry.
That's just the the start of it really. There should be something to stop people from jumping because a drake can play gate tennis with 10 people until support arrives or the 10 people get bored and that's just lame and more immersion breaking than making somebody responsible for their choice to enter 0.0 or lowsec.

Oh we can work around that. Just say the field emitted by the scram envelops your ship and prevents the process of towing it into the station, or for the process of the gate scooping it up. After all, CCP has never said exactly whats happening when you see "tow your ship". (Cable carried out by a drone? Tractor beam? Towing ship?) So they can easily make something up that a scram interferes with. Same way thith jumps. You try it and get some error massage like "Scram harmonics are interfering with gate operation", or some such.
But would we want it? In any form? With some other changes as well?
BTW are we talking about Stargates? Or Jumpgates?

No, not like magical indestructible clothing. Like using a warp drive for warping.
And no, not like pink unicorns or potato harvests, and nothing at all like steel reinforcing rod and other completely random statements that make absolutely no sense whatsoever to the argument.

But handing over your ship to a docking computer while in 50% hull and people shooting at it doesn't break immersion for you and is consistent with common sense? -- please consider to visit our w-space system, cake will be served immediately. |

yeah sure, CCP could come up with some in-game fiction to explain away the reasons why, but it would have to be consistent with current EVE fiction/lore, and there would need to be a reason why things worked fine before, but not after the suggested changes.
It all comes down to needing a reason why you would want to make these changes in the first place. Is there an actual need to stop people entering a station? Current aggression mechanics provide this.

Absolutely. You are under the protection of the station at that point.

Gate camping boost.
Solo / small gang nerf (crippling nerf).
Bubble people into a system the only way they would be able to escape is with lockbreaking strategies which would basically force them to fit in specific ways limiting viable roaming fleets. Makes defending home-turf much easier for the same reason.

It could be a new module. Gate-jumper-scrambler-thingiemajig.
It might make it more interesting. Right now a gatecamper can just rely on the fact that if the enemy shoots at him, he can just jump thru and the enemy can't follow him(1 vs 1).
Would we see as much gatecamping with this module? Most gatecamps aren't solo so I doubt it would reduce it, might just increase it instead.
In reality I think it would just turn into a "bubble" in lowsec. Have instalocker at gate, catch everyone who takes a splitsecond too long to jump gate. Gank em to hell. Feed babies to the tiger, see who wins...

And then we just wait for a few more months for enough voices to demand and get a counter-scram.
Bad idea, breaking this broken game further.
You already have useless ECM and ECCM because of these situations. You have Jump bridges which have been neutered. You have Super Caps you cannot scratch. You have broken ships (Gallente ships are a typical example, there are others) You have broken railguns (and other weapons)
No "new" things please, for God's sake.
Fix the broken stuff first, THEN look at new things, new ideas.
There's a list of game-breaking bugs as long as a meter. Sort those out first, don't introduce more Krap.
'Nuff said. Thorn.

It would also make it impossible for blockade runners going through low/null sec in haulers to escape. Ie. Blockade runner jumps through gate, and there's a camp on the other side, they manage to lock and scram him, so he's burning back to the gate in his slow assed hauling ship, getting bumped along the way, hoping his shields hold until he manages to cross those 12km to the gate. ( which is a looong distance in these cases ). If you stop people from jumping, then this guy would have 0 chance against the camp. If they catch him with a scram, it's curtains. Right now, you have the option of going back to that gate, hoping you make it, and jump to get away. You'd be taking that away.
Any decent camp CAN catch a blockade runner if they're good and on the ball, even a cloaky one. The only solace said cloaky has is that they have a chance to escape back from whence they came, and either try again, or take an alternate route.
As blockade runner, it's already pretty hard to run the gauntlets through null and low sec, with the many tools pirates have to relieve you of your cargo. Adding this to it would make being a blockade runner pretty much impossible.

Because there really needs to be another reason to go sit on a gate with your thumb up your ass, because that tactic isn't used by enough people, right?
