tough to nail this one down.
ST is a cursed IP these days, ever since SFC III the license has been plundered by greedy companies out to make a quick buck off the IP.
this would be the case with almost any popular IP, but usually the IP owner takes care to prevent the wholesale devaluation of that IP by screwhead bean counters.
This was the case with the ST IP, until sony acquired the IP from Paramount. Sony has pretty much acted like they purchased a sex slave with the ST IP.
license it to every 2 bit developer who can flog a couple hundred thousand units of retail boxes out of it. Quality? who cares, longevity of the IP? they care even less.
naw, ST has been rode hard and put away wet, expect more of this experimental tomfoolary as time goes on

Actually "these days" the Trek IP is finally doing quite all right! Thanks to the (relative) recent change in leadership(Daniel Stahl) over at Cryptic. And the small but very dedicated team of DEVs who can barely conceal their total Trekkie roots.
They remind me VERY much of CCP in their heydays. Posting routinely on the fora and have no problem moaning about this and that.

Granted currently they too are having post major patch blues, and the Trekkies have their panties in a bunch over the new Enterprise-F. But that¦s almost to be expected. And oddly this summer of gamer-rage seems to be an industry wide phenomenon, as almost every major MMO outfit out there has effed up in some way or other.
This "browser game" is inconsequential.

Moved from General Discussion.
I'll have to check this out. It reminds me of the old Next Generation game for the Nintendo; top down, 2d spaceship fighting, and bonus ability to fly Klingon vessels!

Ah I remember this game. I actually started eve as a stopgap while waiting for STO. Once I got into eve and after STO was released I thought "meh" and carried on with eve.

I predict that in a year or two the word "Freetard" will be in the dictionary.

The Cryptic store in STO should have been an inspiration for CCP, most of the stuff are either vanity items or cool stuff that's not really necessary for the game play like the Galaxy X dreadnought, in some ways its worse than the either high tier ships and people buy it because they want to fly it. There are a few items that are "game changing" like the T5 retrofits but these are available entirely in game, you receive a free token to buy one with when you rank up and you can earn emblems to buy the others. (a bit of a grind though)
Everything else is just for vanity, say you want a freed borg drone running around in Enterprise era uniforms you can buy them cheaply. The other main aspect is all the items are fairly cheap and apply to your account so any Federation content you buy will also apply to any other Federation character you make on that account so you do not need to buy it twice.
Its fairly obvious that the C-store is a success because you constantly see players running around with item shop gear and the income from it could be the only thing that keeps the game open, if a game that's already financially viable had the same success it would probably bring in a massive amount of money for the developer.

Obvious milking of a brand name imo. It offers no real gameplay from what I see, and when you can pay to win what is the point? --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

st:botf was great except for the glaring memory leaks that will cripple your game eventually... no matter what
outside of that, i can't remember a st game worth playing
