Gonna be starting L4 missions (after a few market runs and such) and was wondering about more down the road. I am flying Minni ships and had planned to start L4's with a Maelstrom and eventually moving up to a Vargur. However, before the Vargur, I want to be able to Faction (and a Deadspace shield booster) and have a Crystal implant set. I know these are long goals, but I have the patience and have run L4's before, so I know what I am getting into.
My question is, which should I get first? The implant set or Faction mods? Which would benefit the Maelstrom more at first? The majority of the mods I have looked at for the Vargur are also ones that will be fit on the Maelstrom.
I am only asking this because I would like to be piecing it together as I go along. I have not decided whether I will use T2 turrets or Faction, but either way, T2 turret skills will be trained before starting the Vargur training. (still have about 6 months or so of skills planned before I even start for the Vargur lol)
And.. I like the idea of the Vargur much better, but.. how does the Mach compare to the Vargur?

Vargur with crystals makes missions so easy that CCP ought to just give people a pile of ISK every 10 minutes.
Tried just about all ships by now and the AC Vargur was by far the easiest to use (standard T2 fit, no implants) .. slightly slower than a Mach in completion times but if you salvage on same account having the wrecks nicely bunched up (thanks to tractors) is a godsend.

Im assuming with a Crystal set, the need for a XL shield booster wouldnt be needed anymore? If thats the case, I'll certainly get the Crystals before a Deadspace shield booster at any rate.

If you're not going to get a really expensive shield booster (which you don't need anyway to run lvl 4s) then the first thing you probably want to buy is a CN or DG shield booster. Then probably crystals. The logic being that you aren't likely to be podded and crystals don't give anyone incentive to suicide gank you.
In fact the only problem at all I see with your plan is that you might be planning to put too much faction **** on there. Its not neccesary. It can get you suicide ganked if (your modules cost) > ((Cost of ships required to gank you) - (Insurance))*2
Also the Mach puts out a bit more DPS than the Vargur. You could probably come up with a better AFK tank on the Vargur but if you want the isk / hour metrics then you should seriously think about the Mach. Pull out EFT (EVE Fitting Tool) and look at them both with all lvl 5 skills.
You eventuallyh want T2 guns because the T2 +damage skill only applies to T2 guns, and you really want Barrage.

You don't even need fancy crystals to be honest. This is very effective and is only moderately 'pimp'

I do like that fit. No doubt cheaper than what I had planned xD. Think those meds would work on Maelstrom? Needless to say, i don't have my shield tanking skills where I'd like them to be, but honestly it's been so long that I have ran L4's that I don't really remember a good number of dps to be able to tank.

Edited by: achoura on 22/07/2011 19:42:31 Tbh on that ship (Vargur) you're best using the above fit or just getting half a crystal set. implants 1-5 have the same shield boost effect as a full lowgrade set at a good price since the omega is what costs a bomb plus your sp will rise faster than with a low grade +2 set.
Use the above fit and +5s or half a crystal set and fit t2 (meaning you'll never get ganked + some missions are easier) or use +5ss, pimp the tank knowing you'll get ganked some day. ***The EVE servers and their patches***

Reccomending this fit, except I like cap booster/dmg rigged variants. Either way I agree the vargur is one of the best all-around pve ships at present.

Theres no need for an XL shield booster to begin with.

no doubt about that. So far, even with my level 4 tanking skills, all I have to do is hit the XL booster every once in a while. Barely even need a cap booster with it.

Avoid posting a big target on your back if possible and op for the implants instead. Suicide gankers do exist and they love stupidly expensive mission ships. Heck there is 2 pilots that operate in my system on a regular basis, I have seen them on numerous occasions. I never had a problem with them as one is setup for gank the other salvage, and I am in a T2 fitted NH, that requires them to put out a lot more than what their capable in their alpha to bring me down. In order to bring me down they would lose a lot of money and need several additional pilots, and they might be lucky to get 3mil in loot from it.

asuming u have full high grade crystals (slots 1-6)you shield boosting be comes insane i set my alt up in a tengu with those implants and have yet to run into a mission that could break that tank. just to test it i hit all the triggers on "blockade L4" and tanked it all.

I had not put suicide gank attempts in with my thoughts on this. Implants probably would be my best bet.
Lady, fit saved for the Vargur. Thanks a ton!
Thanks everyone else for all the replies!

Actually, I was just thinking. According to EFT, that would not be cap stable. I have always ran with either cap stable ships or used cap boosters. How do you manage that? I'm assuming just pulsing booster around peak recharge spot for shields?

Invoking the power of Liang Nuren: being cap stable in level 4 missions is a luxury. That is, something you don't truly need, since battleship-sized PVE boats have the firepower to seriously cut the incoming dps, really fast. If you're feeling nervous, cap boosters are the way to go.
But really, trust me on this one, cap stability is not required for pure pwnage in level 4s.
