Had an argument with a friend last week about mining.
He maintained that there was no point in doing mining until you could fly something that could mount strip miners, and that a small ship would not be welcome in a mining fleet.
I reckoned that since there aren't any fleet size limits, ANY amount of extra yield would be still of use. Even if a rookie pilot was only mining 15% of his neighbour, that's still going to get the barge filled a little faster, right?
Assuming we're talking hisec, which is where new miners would hang out anyway, and the fleet in question is friendly, who's more likely to be right? Is a mining frigate going to be refused joining the fleet, or be welcome?

If everyone has a stripminer doing the calculations for reward sharing is a lot easier.

Or you could just share it out evenly, despite an untrained noob not doing as much work as everyone else, just because its a less douchebaggy thing to do than quibble over scraps.

I used to run fleet mining ops before I turned to the dark side, and we were quite happy to include any ship with a mining laser. I guess it depends on the corp, but I always considered mining operations to be as much a social event as an isk-maker.

The problem is sharing out the profits, although it's laughable since mining is one of the lowest incomes possible in the game and helping a noob out on his way to a mining barge is a ridiculously small dip into your profits.
It's down to people's greed unfortunately. I'd suggest finding a less crappy group of people to work with because those qualities of character are only going to manifest themselves in worse ways further down the line.

You worrie to much about virtuall titbits where as the effort for the frigate is exactly the same as a hulk in a mining op.
I agree on the social aspect, plus being part of, and appreciated by, "old timers" can help a new player really get a nice start while seeking out his/her path to choose.
A bit of help can go a long way eventhough it can bite you in the arse every now and then.

this is because mining profession in eve online is gimped and ******ed
mining doesn't really include anything which requires a bit of brain, like actually searching the ore etc and major part of minerals comes from something which isn't actually mining but LOL shooting other ships WTF.

There are quite alot of corps out there that split the profit evenly. Tho, they usually keep track of attendance. I.e. if the op is three hours and you attend one, while someone else three hours, obviously you'll get less.
People that just look at others efficiency in mining should stop mine in the first place. And if they decide to stick to it, they'd go solo with a small alt-fleet anyway to maximize profits, depleting belts fast, without having it overcrowded.
I.e. get a better corp.

A bantam is not a bad ship for mining when a new pilot as its so very easy to get going and pulls in agood amount of dirt for what it is. Its also so cheap you simply wouldn't care if it got blown up
