Edited by: Mia Toqu on 25/07/2011 20:11:05 hi there,
i have a bit trouble of understanding the values in my PI setup. guess it will be no problem to clear this up quickly because this whole PI stuff makes my head esplode.
here is my extractor, it shows currently running aqueous liquids with an output of 25434 units/hour. it also shows routing aqueous liquids out with 618.32m3/hour, aqueous liquids use up 0.01m3 so i am routing 61832 units/hour.
how am i routing more then double of my output? not that i mind it, but on my other colony i have the exact opposite problem, routing less then i produce.
i can not find any way to reduce or raise the values being routed, so i will guess these are set by the source and destination structures.
either my extractors are plain out lying to me or showing merely useless values, or i am missing something important between the lines.
please help :S

At the start of a program u will notice higher yield than in the end of a program. It's not a flat 25434 units/hour. - - - - - Q.(-.- ).o |

The load value is based on the highest cycle in the duration, which is typically the first; you need the specified bandwidth to handle to maximum cycle.

damn my default char keeps reseting, hope this sticks now.
thanks kelmurdoch, but it cant be that either.
i just checked, for my current running program, the highest cycle brings up 8393 units, but the route will carry 13298 units. on my lava colony i see the same, highest cycle brings up 9174 units, but the route will carry 14517 units.
maybe its just bugged? should i fill a petition? not that there is a real problem about it, the colony is crunching stuff, and i really dont want to bother the devs with things working as intended.
i just want to understand the math behind it.

I see that you use that launchpad to receive the Aqueous Liquid then route it to your processors and then recieve Water back.
First, I have noticed that the amount incoming never matches up after the first load. It always says the initial amount.
Second, I think the Load of 618.32 is taking your transitions and incoming into account as well as what is arriving from the extractor.
Does the 15 minute cycle of the extractor have anything to do with it?
I doubt any of this answers the question but I hope it helps shed some light on it.

Partially; the underlying question then becomes whether OP is using the same pipe for that process.

I think this, along with the initial extract value is importnat: the combination of your first extract cycle value being for 15 min and the fact that the pipe values are always shown as per hour probably accounts for your difficulty.
I'm a pretty skilled extractor and I admit I'm not familiar with these issues. I take the brute force approach of "I don't care about this piddling small stuff, just widen the pipe".
Course, I also always build my structures as close together as possible, so pipe power and cpu issues are minimized.

the routing value is not the amount actually moved, it is the maximum that will be moved by that route. For example if you have a route set up for 25,000 units but you extractor has one of its cycles produce over 25000 units then anything over 25000 is lost.
When you set up a route it automatically sets the route to the maximum output cycle. this is only a problem if you get a spawn that significantly ups your extractor output but you still have the route set for the lower yield. if this happens you may need to delete the route and set up a new route for the higher output. The amount actually routed is equal to the output of the cycle from the extractor, as long as the extractor never outputs more than the route maximum nothing is lost.

ok, so then how does the game decide how much stuff can be carried by a route? if i install a program that produces more then my route can carry, will i get a proper route if i delete and re-create the route, as long as the link is strong enough?
why must this be so damn confusing, cant it just show the value actually currently routed, which would be actually useful?
btw, the route in question is going from extractor to launchpad and is one-way only, nothing else moving over that link.

That is correct. When you create the rout is is automatically set to cover the max cycle output of the current extraction program. As long as you cycle outputs stay the same or slightly lower you will never have to change the route. but if you do get a better spawn and your extraction out put goes up you need to delete the route or and another route to make up the difference. Provided the link can support it.To avoid this I ussually try to manually set the route limit a little higher just so I do not need to update it.
