please post a short answer, yes or no, and a brief bit about why you started playing, what was most appealing to you before you knew much about eve?

No. I began playing because of the articles and news stories I have read about nullsec and corporations. When a video game reaches CNN, MSNBC, etc, it tends to get my attention.

Yes, kinda.
I'm not new, but the idea that my character was more than a ship has always bothered me a little. I love flying, but there was always half a game in my mind that was missing. When they finally announced Ambulation (and it wasn't just a rumor anymore), I knew that EvE was were I would stay.

As a noob I thought it would be cool to fly one but by the time I had the skillpoints for it I realised I liked flying smaller stuff. ~~~

No, but it sure helps with immersion knowing that I am indeed a person and not a Megathron.

Yes, definitely.
I downloaded the trial a couple of years ago but didn't play more than half an hour. A month or so ago a friend emailed me about the avatar patch coming out, and I decided to give it a try then, have been playing since (a bit over a month).
TBH I play with the CQ turned off. But the character creation + knowing I have a dude in there does a lot for immersion - and immersion is why I play MMOs.
I have to admit, now that I am playing, I wish I DID give it a better try a couple of years ago - 2 years of additional skill training sounds juicy.

Obviously I started playing because of the marketing blitz they did on every forum I ever searched showing pretty space ships flying around.
However the character creator when I first started 2 and a half years ago was abysmal. It was pretty much impossible to create something that didn't give you nightmares. The new character creator is pretty amazing and I've seen some avatars that look like works of art. Since this is the face you are showing to the rest of EVE I think it is pretty important. After all the ships are interchangeable and except for the very huge ones you really can't even see other players ships unless you are right next to them.
So anyway ships is obviously what drew me in but I think the avatar is important too and I'm down with whatever comes in the future for "walking in stations" even though I often play with CQ off for now.

Agreed, there are a number of REALLY good characters I've seen around. I would count yours among them. Well done. ______________________

I began playing to relive Elite. However now, as back then, my character was in the foreground, not my ship. So I was a bit disappointed with the old character creator not allowing me to port my character from the Traveller universe to New Eden.
That changed with the new creator, which delivers a more accurate vision.
So no, I didn't start for the avatar, but I did start for the character, and I'm happy with the new character creator.

Same .. with a few other reasons thrown in as well, but yes I also felt a bit of disconnection by not having a real character. Honestly I would be fine without expanding it to WIS but that's also pretty cool sounding.

When I first started Eve, I was told capsuleers were man/machine with the role to provide main control of a ship. This reminded me alot of the game Homeworld where Karen Sjet took the identity "Fleet Command" in the Mothership.
I thought the Eve Chronicle "Xenocracy" confirmed it: http://www.eveonline.com/background/potw/default.asp?cid=15-06-10
These new avatars feel very different from the Eve Online I come to know. What appealed me to this game is that the player *is* the ship or has a symbiotic role with the ship. For me, the new avatars are a contradiction to the system unless with higher level implants, the more machine people are than man.

A lot of players have had this issue. The backstory has been pretty in-depth for awhile, and there's been a lot of info that contradicted this, but players being what we are, some simply made up their own story and ignored anything else. Thus, avatars become an issue.
I met in the middle. When I'm in my pod, in my ship, the ship is a very physical extension of my self. At a very base level, my character IS his ship in every way. But when that pod ejects and he injects from the pod, he feels 'limited', as if he's separated from a part of himself.
In a much smaller way, he does the same when moving from larger ships to smaller. Going from a titan to flying a frigate would be much the same on my characters psyche as going from being 6'7" and a massive powerlifter to a body that is 4'9" and 98lbs. Same brain, different physical self.
Just another way of melding ideas and enjoying the game. Just act ****ed every time you get out of your pod. Should be easy, right?
See? I told you guys that every EvE player is a roleplayer ...

When I first started playing(couple years ago) I was annoyed that I needed to create a character to play the spaceship game.
I was pretty ****ed when I found out after spending 10 minutes creating the character that I can't customize the ship, and that's the only thing people see... |

Edited by: Silas Cooper on 30/07/2011 01:26:21 when I started I didn't know, when I learned I didn't care. First titan I saw was The Enslaver's and while it was quite an experience I never cared much for the "oooh must have the biggest ship" thing.
