So I recently finished the Revelation space trilogy. The first two books (Revelation Space & Redemption Ark) were good, but the last one (Absolution Gap) is ZOMG terrible. I mean, burning is too good for that last one. I feel so cheated Now I did love House of Suns and currently am reading Chasm City which is looking to be very good. My question to you is, are other of his books suprise terribad ? I am considering buying these : Century Rain Pushing Ice The Prefect Terminal World Diamond Dogs, Turquoise Days Galactic North Zima Blue and Other Stories
Let me know what you think

I've read: Revelation Space, Redemption Ark, Absolution Gap House of Suns Pushing Ice Terminal World Chasm City The Prefect
I liked all of them, though I think Pushing Ice is my personal favorite. You'll like it if you're into more exploration type books and it's very reminiscent of Rendezvous with Rama if you ever read Clarke books. The Prefect is also good and I actually liked that one more than Chasm City, and Terminal World is very...different, though also a fun read.

They're all good, only some more so than others.
Definately get "The Prefect" (which is awesome), "Diamond Dogs, Turquoise Days", "Zima Blue" and "Galactic North" (most of the shorts are excellent).
Personally, I wasn't too keen on "Terminal World" (some promise, but it just doesn't go anywhere).

The Prefect is awesome, all the others you haven't picked up are good too. Terminal World could easily have been 100 pages shorter, though.
And btw, Revelation Space isn't a trilogy. The Prefect is part of the universe too, as is Chasm City, and some of the short stories.

I enjoyed the entire Revelation Space trilogy, myself. Perhaps the first two books were so good that I convinced myself the third was as well, I don't know. I have heard a number of people criticize that book, I'm not sure what was so terrible about it.
I *love* Chasm City, it's my favorite of the Reynolds novels I've read. It does admittedly go off in some weird directions, but the atmosphere of the book was great. The closest thing I've read to a mystery in ages, which is funny because I used to read mostly that genre as a kid; now I don't even know which writers to look to for a good mystery.
I can't really comment on the other books, because they didn't really stick in my mind; perhaps that's its own comment.

Well I did just finish Chasm City and it was excellent. Might be less so if you had not read the Revelation trilogy first maybe. Thanks for the advice.

Edited by: Chaoswynd on 07/08/2011 18:34:38 I really enjoyed Century Rain, nice hardcore science fiction/noir mix.
Pushing Ice was a great take on the first encounter scenario
Diamond Dogs, Turquoise Days was excellent. I've read through it a few times now.
Zima Blue and Other Stories was also excellent, and had many shorts in the Revelation Space/Chasm City universe.
I haven't read Terminal World yet, however I did read through Galactic North, but I can't honestly recall anything about it, which probably goes to show how good it was.
I agree on Absolution Gap, I was very disappointed with most of it.
If you like Alastair Reynolds, you should also try Iain M. Banks (if you haven't already, which I'd be surprised to hear since you read Reynolds)

Glad it isn't just me.
Everything sci-fi Banks has written is pure gold, except Feersum Endjinn, which was a nice story but the 'broken text' gave me bloody headaches (probably cause I am not a native English speaker). I read a few of his fiction books and they were excellent as well.
