Xboxer Dies of Blood clot
To avoid this happening to you simple exercises can be conducted. Here is a light routine.
Day One: Twenty minute walk before gaming. When the FC calls for a break mention exercising to everyone. A simple 10 to 15 minute break every hour and half should work fine.
Aurora Jacks - Standard jumping jacks where 25 to 30 jumping jacks are to be completed.
Aurora Thrusts - stand with your hands on your hips and thurst forward and backward as well as moving your hips in a clockwose and counter-wise motion 25 reps each. You'd be amazed at how well it will loosen you up.
Aurora Bends - stand with your feet about two and a half feet apart. Slowly bend at the waste until your palms touch the floor or come close to touching the floor. If you feel a slight pulling that is your muscles being stretched out so don't snap back up to avoid the pain. Simply roll back up into a stadning position and repeat. 25 repititions.
Aurora Toe Touches - same thing as Aurora Bends but you instead of bending over your touch each alternate foot with the opposite hand. Left over Right, Right over Left. 25 repititions.
Aurora Push Ups - Standard push-up position but the feet are crossed where the knees created an inclined pushed up 45 reps
Aurora Arm Twists - make small to larger circular patterns with your hands working your way upto your entire arm. Can be done with one arm or both at the same time.
25 reps.
These simple exercises will not get you ready for the Mr. or Mrs. Universe contest but it will help keep blood clots from forming.
If your FC was worth anything he would lead you in these exercises.
NOW GET OUT THERE FANCY FAT BOTTOMS!

I have sat in one spot for days at a time, only getting up for food/drinks and to ****/****. I have done this for the past 5 years straight (although I do have college 2 nights a week) Before that, If I wasn't at work, I was online, doing what I enjoyed.
If this guy died from sitting for a long time, he died, because he had other health problems.

This might be the best post i read all month. Gamers sit for hours on end and it starts to make you feel like a zombie, gotta get up and even run in place if you have to. It really helps to make you think clearly (after several days).

Gtfo with this bull**** already, I regularly game and I'm going to be drawing for a living yet I still manage to do enough exercise that I'm fitter than most average people.
If you're really that concerned then try maybe getting a weight set or doing some stretches while you're auto-piloting to Jita or something or do some exercise when maintenance happens. That said though, I've yet to meet anyone in EVE who actually plays long enough that it would be considered a health risk by any credible doctors with a brain to call their own.
Oh and yes, exercises like the one the OP posted will help too, but seriously, use your ****ing common sense and stop trying to make game censorship and banning justifiable you lazy ****s.

No-one was saying that gaming was the problem - sitting still for long periods of time without any kind of mitigation for clots forming in your veins is the problem - they also made a fuss when people on long haul flights suffered from these kinds of episodes and now the compression sock industry makes a killing off of the fears of passengers of these flights.
He probably had some pre-existing condition exacerbated by a disinclination to exercise which meant he was more susceptible to a clot forming when blood pooled in (probably) his limbs. When he then moved, the clot shifted and he suffered the consequences.
Try not to get so defensive. He wasn't stupid, he got unlucky and didn't do himself any favours either - his parents are just hurting and have rightly identified the pre-cursor to their son's death. That they call it the 'cause' is neither here nor there - it's just semantics. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I've been doing this for the last year and lost about 30 pounds. I was 200 and went to 170, my ideal weight. My older sister is a nutritionist and reamed this simple **** down my throat till I did it cause she knew stripping me from the computer was going to be hard as fck.
I try to do this each 3 hours or each break.
30 sit-ups/crunches 30 push-ups 100 jumping-jacks
It really makes a big difference and is super easy. Waiting for that slow ass guy in your corp to get fitted for your small-gang roam????? Do this work-out!!! Yrust me you have time.
I also run 2 miles 3 times a week when I wake up but It took me awhile to build up the stamina to do that.
Also Dominoes and Mountain Dew are the devil.

I seem to recall a CCP dev being taken to the hospital after a 50 hour playtime.
And this death has nothing to do with video games. It has to do with crappy parenting, blatant stupidity, and survival of the fittest. Darwin Award winner material, in other words.

Also, I find it absolutely hilarious that, reading through the comments, you stumble upon some batshoot crazy christian and then normal conversation continues.

I certainly agree with the poster but one thing he forgot to mention!
For the fellow chefs out there, dont worry! we all walk/run around for 12 hour shifts, the last thing we need todo is get up and exercise :P
But seriously i think your definatly right, even on my days off if i dont get up every 1-2 hours i dont seem to think things through as well(hence more lost ships :P... oh and the drinking probably doesn't help either!)

Deep Vein Thrombosis is mainly caused by, as mentioned above, blood pooling in the legs where it can clot.
The reason this happens is that sitting still means the Soleus muscle (lower calf) is not being exercised. This muscle has an important function as a ancillary pump, helping to get blood back up to heart. If your not walking about, the soleus does not "pump" and blood does not circulate as effectively and this can cause a clot in ANYONE (though obviously some are more prone to it than others depending on circulatory conditions)
So its not about keeping fit, bench pressing 200lbs or working out the peen. Its purely about keeping the blood flowing. Get up, walk about for a few minutes, all will be well.
Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.

In days of old, long before means-tested benefits, the government wanted to give food and shelter to people who could not find work and consequently were starving to death. The problem was, how to stop people who could work from also taking the food and shelter? There was no bureaucracy to speak of, no way of checking peopleÆs ID or financial position.
The answer was to make people work for their food and shelter in Workhouses. The jobs were designed to be as pointless and demeaning as possible so that only the most desperate would put up with them. An example was a big heavy wheel that had to be rotated by hand all morning. It was so heavy it took two people to move û and it was not connected to anything! There was absolutely no point to the exercise.
Which brings me onto the topic at hand. Go to your gym and you will see modern equivalents of Workhouse Wheels. People working hard and going nowhere. Is it any wonder most people lose the motivation?
IÆve often thought that the next big thing will be an MMO that combines physical exercise with in-game accomplishments: Want to build a castle? First you need to cycle on a bike to carry the stone to where itÆs needed. Want to pvp? You need to wind a wheel as fast possible to build up mana to cast a spell etc etc.

The guy was waiting for a job interview, dropped his gum, and bent down to pick it up. Then died. So going for jobs, chewing gum, and bending down are way more dangerous than playing games.

I recommend regular vigorous sex while on vent. If it can happen in WoW (dude 'accidentally' left vent on while he boffed his GF and the whole raid heard), it can happen in Eve. You get a great workout, and your corp gets some decent exercise from laughing (actually good exercise). Win-win. -- The Door! |
