It's player to player MT. It makes Blizzard no money except for the flat fee upon listing (which hasn't been announced) and sales fee (also flat, not announced). All in all it looks like their best attempt to pre-empt RMT third parties from taking over by setting up a legit shop ahead of time. Nothing is being delivered to the players out of thin air.

This presents quite a huge opportunity for in-game traders. As traders (mostly) profid from the stupid, and there's no lack of stupid in online games, you can make huge in-game profits (ref: EVE Online). Worst case? You lose some virtual jewellery. Best case? You make yourself a hefty sum of cash. ---

Edited by: Nimrod Nemesis on 02/08/2011 00:56:00 I kindof doubt anyone, barring a few lucky dogs in the first month or so, will be making "hefty," sums of cash. But you never know. It's a blizzard title, so it's invariably going to have an audience plus market volume many orders of magnitude larger than even Jita (on each server).

Which maybe the first step in governments taxing virtual income and property (whether you sell sell the item or not).

IMO, it's a very smart move. The "black market" can't be eliminated, but it can sure get heavily neutered when official alternatives exist. This is basically an official "grey market", with Blizzard getting a cut on all transactions, and the end users DO NOT get screwed in the process.
This will hamper the black market, but it's also an open invitation to botting, and those who don't bot will get screwed. ------------------------------------------

How does this incentivise botting any more than the usual off-the-record RMT business and personal-gain botters normally do?

botters will be able to sell items they get with blizzard's protection over the sales and transfer for RL cash, which is very positive for them
and by having a legit items marketplace, the amount of players using it will increase significantly, which means more demand and more money to be made therein _____________________ Look down. Back up. Where are you? You're on a forum, with the alt your alt could post like. |

In before somebody tries to go internet lawyer on somebody for scamming them out a sword they bought with their allowance/coke money/pension.
D3 probably needs this in the long run. They can't ever stop item sales/botting/gold farming, so they might as well try to replace the black market with a legal one. A lot like PLEX/GTC in EVE.

People who will use the RMAH are not exclusive to botters. There are players who will bot for in-game rewards, players who will bot for money, and players who may or maynot do either. The exitance of a legitimate cash market doesn't make the bot coders any more efficient, it doesn't make the player base any more willing to break the EULA, and it certainly doesn't mean Blizzard will not try to stamp it out.

Yeah, I thought this would be a nice playground for lawyers. They could accuse people of selling professionally and sue them for tax evasion.

I'd say a smart move be Blizzard. Instead of playing "high morale above all else" they simply admit real life trends and decided to take on it. I would only support if CCP introduce that kind of system instead of their MT shop which will benefit only CCP with that kind of pay for play and pay to win/look good/show off if you ***b. Don't tell me they wont do it. They had no plans for MT shop too a year back. At least Blizzard did it fairly and honestly it will add a lot of interest into the game. You have more options to choose from and even earn some real life cash while playing your beloved game. Of course it opens some new possibilites for black market too but somehow I think Blizzard will manage to eliminate most of that. Did not intended to check D3 at all but now I will out of curiousity to see how that work. Can't deny they possibly making a revolution in MMO industry. Surprisingly CCP have to learn something off Blizzard. Never thought I would say that.

Exactly my GRUDGE againts the bunch of liars at CCP. They just do stuff without even SAYING bluntly what they doing. Blizzard spouts out to the world their plan, the rules are not changed midgame and everyone knows what they getting into. Simple, honest and brutally efficient, unlike the cheap booze winos and drunkards at CCP. ---Eve is not dying, its being murdered ----

Edited by: Nimrod Nemesis on 03/08/2011 21:27:49 Well, to be fair, Blizzard has with D3 a complete diffirent game than CCP with EVE. They've made it completely clear to the fans that D3 is a co-op, PvE-driven rpg almost the polar opposite of EVE. They've also made it clear that they don't want such a RLmarket system for an MMO that has more emphasis on pvp (clearly they would take issue with CCP's approach). They also don't have to worry about PLEX (or subscriptions for that matter).
I totally agree Blizzard did the right thing by implementing this and fully explaining why up-front (even prior to the beta), but it's really apples and oranges we're talking about.
