there's 2 tanking types, shield and armor and then you get 2 sub types, active and passive...
passive shield; you'll want large shield extenders + invulns active shield; (not too good for cruisers, so we'l just ignore this)
passive armor; 800mm or 1600mm rolled tungsten plates + energized adaptive nano membranes or adaptive nano plating (depending on skills/fitting) active armor; cap booster, EANM/ANP + armor rep
The are the general combat cruiser for the 4 races Caldari; Moa, or Caracal (Blaster boat and Missile boat, both shield) Gallente; Vexor or Thorax (Blaster and drone boat, armor or shield) Minmatar; Rupture or Stabber (Brawler and kite, armor or shield) Amarr; Arbitrator or Maller (drone boat and tanker, armoor shield)
Then there's the ewar cruiser... probably best stay away from these until you have good support skills for them.. also ignore the logistics/miner cruisers, cos they are a bit ****)
Edit: I misread, I thought you said pvp... for pve.. caracal/vexor/arby/rupture... google the fittings for the level missions your on. This site is good

For PVP or PVE, you're pretty much going to want to use a Rupture. You can armour or shield tank it, depending on where you want your support skills to lie for larger ships.
You can passive shield tank a Ruppie, and passive shield tank a cane. Those skills will then assist you in flying the Maelstom, which you should active shield tank. Also? I just tricked you into reading my signature. |

I agree the passive rupture works fine for level 2s.
I've tried all minnie cruisers when doing level 2s and would say the rupture is by far the best. The stabber isn't even the second best minnie cruiser for missions. The bellicose is often seen as a lol ship, but is actually a decent little mission runner. I actually prefered it over the rupture, but thats because of my hatred of the rupture ship model.

I used to hate the look of the Rupture as well, and refused to fly it simply based on looks. It's psychologically interesting how over time, the look of the Rupture hull grew on me, as I learned how well the Rupture performs in pvp for a ship of its class and cost. I now love its look, as I associate it with solid, dependable pvp performance. Sarcasm - Because i'm too far away to strangle you. |

Because more DPS is best and the rupture is the highest dps mimnitar cruiser.
Vaga is nice but speed does not help you run missions that much faster
Same for many others they have niches but dps run missions fastes so the rupture.
Also traning for rupture sets you up well for the huricane.
I suggest artillary,a shield tank and dps mods in the lows ______ Hello WoW players. Look at your toon, now back to me. Sadly it isn't me, but if it wasn't simplistic pre scripted linear mono dimensional game you could look like me. I'm in a Paladin |

The cream of the crop are the ruppie, the thorax and the vexor.
The ruppie is the most easily trained for to make effective, and the best in PvP.
With blasters, the thorax is the highest DPS cruiser in the game, and can rival a battleship in damage output. THe vexor is the toughest of them, but requires extensive skills in drones to use effectively.

Rupture pretty much. Artillery, shield extenders, propulsion, fitting and damage modules. Do not forget drones. Some people will suggest autocannons over artillery, which I would only do for belt hunting and maybe not even there.
Stabber with autocannons also works well for belt hunting.
Scythe for mining. It's inferior to the Osprey tho.
Btw. this thread belongs into Ships and Modules forum section.

After all a matter of opinion and personal taste I guess. Personally I like to be farther away from the crowd I'm shooting at for way easier tanking and more situation awareness. It's also about saving ammunition.
