My PC is currently running a couple of old 500GB Samsung drives, and I think they may be getting slower, or I'm getting less patient. Either way it's time to replace them.
Now that SSD drives are getting more reasonably priced for more reasonably sized drives, I'd thought I'd use one for windows and a few games and a second conventional drive around 1.5-2 TB. So first question how big does the windows SSD drive need to be? I'm considering the 120 or 180GB OCZ drives here, but it's been so long since I've had a clean install I've forgotten how much space windows 7 takes up. Also does anyone know if those OCZ drives are any good?
And the second drive, 1.5-2TB, I'm looking for fast, reliable, and because I'll be running games from it, none of that slowing down when idle eco nonsense. Suggestions?
Cheers Gents.

WD Caviar Blue or Black.
incidentally, Caviar Green is also a good quality and affordable "green" drive, if you want to know about it. Only issue it has is that its energy saving routines make it bad for system drive, but awesome for storage drive. ---

the 120 is an intel SSD, the 640 and the 3 1TBs are all WD blacks and are quite speedy, and the 2TB is a WD green. that 120 has everything from windows on it, along with all the programs except for steam installed on it, including eve. the WD green does just fine for watching 1080P movies from. if you are planning on running any games from it and don't mind spending more, get the black. if it's for long term storage and media such as music, movies, TV shows, and general static media then the green is perfect and will save you money.

If you want to do more than Windows, i'd very much recommend a 160gb+ SSD. The more data there is on an SSD the slower it gets (most of the time), so don't skimp on it too much.
Personally i don't see the point in putting games on an SSD unless you are desperate to shave a few % off loading times - Games see no performance advantage whatsoever from an SSD aside from loading (though games that rely heavily on streaming might see some benefit).

The only game I have on my 80gb SSD is EVE. I assume this will eliminate lag farts. All my other games are on a 1.5TB Samsung Spinpoint F2 EcoGreen (HD154UI) which is daft. But games like BF BC2 are fine once a 6-10 second delay for the multiplayer map to load. But I need to get a decent 7200rpm SATA hard disk for my Steam directory and other games.
Look at this tweaking guide http://forum.corsair.com/forums/showthread.php?t=82516 for things to consider when you have your new first SSD. Like redirecting temp file locations to a regular hard disk to enhance SSD longevity. And putting the pagefile on a regular hard disk.

I personally only will use WD drives. I have WD Caviar Black in my computer, and put WD Caviar Blue in my wife's. ---------.oOo.---------- Chaos, Madness, and Destruction. My work here is done. |

oh ya, I should note that the PCI SSDs are wonderful for benchmarks, but are terrible in actual use.

Intel Smart Response Technology, on the Z68 MB's allow you to have a regular drive and an SSD hooked up together.
I know you have a SATA-II board, but worth thinking about for the future when you upgrade... |
