I'm currently flying a Dominix for doing level 4 missions, but,to be honest, watching my drones shoot things isn't very exciting. I'd like to do some of that shooting myself. Now my gun skills are not great so I know I will have to work on those for any gunnery platform, but is training for flying the Kronos worth the time/cost over a standard Gallente gunnery Battleship?
I can skill up to having Marauders I is less than 30 days.

Marauders tend to be better for PVE yes, I'm not sure that's the case for the Kronos though, considering the blaster range. But why don't you fit some guns on your Dominix? You can even upgrade to a Navy Dominix to make that a bit easier. --- Drykor - AHARM |

My gunnery skills are currently fairly ... poor. I have trouble hitting the broadside of a barn, and when I do the targets regen deals with the damage fairly quickly.
No matter what route I go, I am going to dump a few million points into the gunnery skill family.

If you only fly gallente, the kronos is a worthy mission running ship for sure. I used 425mm t2 rails and a fed navy web in case stuff got too close and it works quite nicely.

A Domi with sentrys and rails does basically as good as the Kronos(less tracking, more dps). Compared to the mega and Hype it sports at least a decent fitting, capacitor and combines the rep bonus and 8 turrets from the hype with the 7. low and tracking bonus from the mega.
Compared to other marauders it is pretty much the worst ship from all 4 in regards of dps and tracking. ---- Nerf Tank - Boost Gank!

Edited by: Canaloney Soup on 09/08/2011 12:14:31 The kronos will out dps a shield gank domi by 35ish dps and the mega or hyper by 100+.
Pros: can loot/salvage well doing mission, better range & tracking then domi, can move and shoot, can hit cruisers under 10km with web fitted, blaster fit with mwd you get round 1300dps.
Cons: cost more, stuck with thermal/kinetic damage

Dominix has turret hardpoints, you should be using them. Kronos is the worst Marauder, simply due to the fact that it relies on hybrid weapons, which are awful. If you want to use guns for L4 missions then either go Minmatar or Amarr.

I understand we fit our ships wildly different, but this is how it looks for me. Green line is domi, red line is kronos. The graph is a tad askewed as the kronos indeed has better tracking, which allows it to use javelin. The same graph without the tracking would look like this. Parrots, commence!

I perfer the Kronos over any regular Gallante battleship, but it is very skill intensive to get great any performance. Can't fly any other race of battleships to compare.

I love the Kronos more than any of my other pure Gallente battleships. I now have Caldari and Amarr BS trained to V, but I still use the Kronos for Kinetic Thermal missions with lots of BSs. I use a Navy Domi for the missions with lots of smaller ships. --- This doesn't even seem to be a regular case of rats fleeing the sinking ship. If you have the funds, train for projectile, and minmatar battleships, and as soon as you can, jump into a machariel. It can take no more than 2 weeks, at worst. And trust me, you won't look back!
Training for projectile first will give you a taste on how to use autocannons (prepare to use range mods). If, like me, you lack shield skills too, you can use faction shield booster and hardeners (the specific damage hardeners come for like 20m each). Else you can still fly your mach armor tanked, but shield tanking is far better. Even with lv 1/2 shield skills. (coz you kill much faster).
To give you an indication, when I made that choice I had like 11m sp, 8.5 in drones, 250k in guns, the rest for armor tanking mainly. It's by far the best choice I did concerning my mission running. there is no spoon |

the kronos as a lv4 runner isnt that bad for a hybrid ship if:
- you fight mostly kin/therm weak rats. - you dont mainly fight guristas, because even after the patch you will get jammed often. this means you need an eccm which will cost you a midslot you should use for a web or tc. vindi is better in that case. - the kronos shines when fighting serpentis, eoms, mercs and to some extend drones. at least thats the missions i use it for.
cheers!

The kronos is defenitely the best gallente gunboat as far as those go. its quite a different ship then for example a dominix, but it will do missions faster on average, if you use it for the right missions.
Personally i can fly both the vargur and the kronos. While the vargur is alot better in most situations, i still prefer the kronos for guristas and eom. It is also fine against serpentis, and some merc & drone missions, but i use my vargur for that since its far better at those.
All in all, the kronos is a fine ship for the missions where it benefits from its dmg types kin & thermal, and its range.

The Kronos still rocks, its easily the best pve gunboat in the Gallente lineup.
Lows: 3xMagstabs 2xMission specific hardeners, i really love the passive ones here 1xEAM 1xRepper
mids 1x cap booster 2x tc with scripts 1x webber
highs 4x 425mm t2 guns with faction antimatter 1x tractor beam (its a marauder after all) 1x drone link augmentor 1x whatever
rigs 1x hybrid collision accelerator 1x hybrid burst aerator
The two TC will let you track almost anything and gives you good enough dps up to 80/90 km. The webber will take care of the rest.
Oh and go for t2 or faction items as you like.
The only drawback is that your good drone skills will not help you with this one. Its a gun boat.
Fly safe.

Kronos is an inferior mission platform to a domi (or navy domi) even under the best of circumstances. If your gunnery skills are as bad as you say it would not only be inferior, it would be horrific. This signature space for rent |

this is not the case. i would hazard the guess youve never flown a kronos or if you did, your fit sucked.

id say a realistic (read range and tank are ok) kronos will scratch 1000dps with rails, cn-antimatter, gardes and a cx2. which is not too pimp and not bad for a rail platform.

what interests me more is your 1100 dps shield domi, since i tried one a while ago and found it not practical to use (too little tank and cap). here is the fit i used, which btw has less dps than the kronos above:
