I've got this alt character set up to quickly start datacore farming, this means I have nearly no fitting, tanking or combat skills.
I'm planning to haul them around in a hauling frigate to keep it cheap and quick. Since they don't take up much cargo I'd say a full load is about 300 datacores. I will only be traveling through highsec.
Do you think this would be a prime target for suicide ganking or is that reserved for bigger ships with more valuable cargo? Is it worth it so spend the time on covops or transport ships?

If you're going to haul something expensive and small, CovOps is always the answer. If cargo value > (value of ships needed to gank you*2), you'll likely end up ganked at some point or another. A couple Thrashers fit for <5M can alpha an unfit T1 frig, how many M in datacores are you carrying?

Well using the research agent profitability calculator I'd estimate that 1 month of RP from 5 agents would be about 35M in datacores.
I doubt I would be hauling a whole month's worth at a time very often though.

Edited by: Jak Silverheart on 09/08/2011 22:12:12 While your profitable to kill, 50/50 chance to drop loot. Could probably suicide gank you with a destroyer, and lose almost nothing. So there is profit to be made from you, do so at your own risk. Though 35mil isn't much isk, so I wouldn't worry about it.
Did you take into account how long it take you to pick up the datacores, vs what you can make doing something productive in that time. I know it would take me around 100jumps to pick up all my datacores so for me it's more worthwhile to run missions for an hour or 2, which is about the time it would take for me to afk fly my asault frig to them (100 jumps doing that manually is too boring for me). So chances are if I ever do pick up my datacores it will be in 6months-1year from now and when I get to them I just contract courier them to some place to sell.
And NO it's not worth training for a covops or transport ship just for this, just do what I plan to do and get to the location where your agent is. Than contract courier where you want the datacores to be. The time it takes for you to train either can be used for more productive things to train for.

Thanks for the posts.
I haven't figured out my route yet until I get more agents going (nearly there). Most of them are fairly close to each other but one is about 20 jumps away from the rest; also have to add on the trade hub where they are going onto that. That's why I chose to fly a frigate, to make traveling quicker.

don't afk the frig...and run the a travel fit. go for fast and agile with some attempt at a tank if you can. named gear works and needs like skill level 1 to fit lol. named gear very workable for your needs here.
Fast adn agile to get off the gates fast. Rarely will you get instalockers on most gates in empire. If you do...they will most likely not care about your cores tbh. they were motivated to have an instalocker in the crew...they want the tards carrying high priced bpo's in frigates lol. Cores...frigates are fine. Don't do the same with that BS bpo you might have one day. A 1 bill bpo is worht the 50/50 chance of drop in a gank.
Frigate choices for this t2 is overkill. Really paranoid about ganks...take the cargo hit and make an extra run or 2, run your races t1 frigate that is the base model for your races interceptor. It has speed and agility built in to a certain degree. Otherwise find your races frig with decent cargo space and jsut put a nano in lows (or run agility rigs if motivated to). Wlll clear empire gates jsut fine like this.

run a covops with agility rigs, manually pilot it cloaking at every jump in, problem sorted.

As others pointed out, there's just no point in collecting datacores monthly or even at a lower interval. You can make much more money doing other things in the mere time it would take you to collect them. Last time I collected all my datacores it had been 2 years and I certainly couldn't justify doing it more often than yearly if I consider what I make in a few hours of incursion or C6 wormhole grinding. --- Drykor - AHARM |

Hmmm, somewhere I got the idea that there was a ceiling on RP.
Thanks for the advice.

when I collect my datacores I use a high resist fitted Gila. Myrmadon with a good tank would be another option. Unless there is a large fleet, nothing will kill these ships. Just don't afk travel when your hold has the cores.

I have used t1 cruisers to haul data cores.
Manually pilot, but it is a risk. problem also soon become cargo space.

Put the datacores into a container. Give the container to an alt. Have the alt put the container into a courier contract assigned to you. Accept courier contract, put it into the hold and take it wherever.
Containers *inside* courier contracts cannot be scanned.
