I use to regularly probe out battlships in about 5 minutes on average.I can't seem to get a second probe hit [only a red sphere] and when I go below 64au range, my ID's disappear. The sphere may get slightly smaller or larger and move just abit, but I never get the red ring showing me the plane that my target is on. I have also tried using 4 and 5 probes on any one target but the signal strength never gets above(3.0).I have tried systems with fewer ships and have switched to different targets. But same results. Im just looking to see if anyone else is having similar issues. If this issue is well known please direct me to the proper forum. thanks.

Since Incarna's changed mechanics, 8 probes is now the best way to go. I assume you're positioning them correctly? Put one on the target, one north, south, east and west, one above and one below and the last one somewhere else. Keep overlap low, but there should be a smallish amount of it.

I set one probe north, south, east, west and one central if I use a 5th probe.I keep a small overlap. I also use shift when repositioning them. It use to take me about 4-5 minutes average to get a 100% warp to result for a battleship at around 2.0 au range. I just find it bizzare that I can't even get a 2 probe hit now.

I haven't had any issues and have been able to probe out cruisers with only using 4 probes in a reasonable amount of time. Make sure you're doing everything properly (i use the north/south/east/west positioning and have gotten good results. So.... maybe a strange bug? _______________________________________________ "If you want to taste the ground, feel free to attack." - Kenshin Himura

Use your directional scanner to get an idea of where your target is so you can start scanning at 2-4 AU and not on 64. Some probers have mastered this well enough to probe something down in one scan

True, you can use the scanner to get direction and range; then layout your 1AU probes using the tactical overlay in the direction of the target. I hear players using this technique in WH space. 100% hit with one probe. Takes alot of system bookmarks I'm sure.
Thanks for your advice. I'll also get back on SISI with my alt and see if I can work things out.

Since Incarna, each probe has a weaker strength. However, all 8 probes you place are used in the calculation instead of the previous max of 4. It'd done so that the strength of 4 probes previously is now equal to about 6 probes. Use 8 probes, and scanning is now easier. Remember your 3D arrangement.

I'm sure you have solved my problem.I was unaware of the change in probe strength.Sorry I missed that in your first post. Thanks for coming back!

If you're taking more than 2 scanner sweeps and 20-30 seconds with probes out you're doing it wrong.
DSCAN is your friend, as others have said.

The kind of probing that I was having a problem with was locating the particular signature ID's of WT's in a large area. Hence the reason I was at 32 - 64au range and with no bookmarks not able to reduce the search area. Using 8 probes has worked out excellent. The kind of probing your talking about has not been an issue and is best if not shared.

Edited by: Mr Kidd on 18/08/2011 15:39:53 The changes to probing with incarna make it advantageous to use as many probes as your skills allow. If you've read this before and still are using 4 probes I feel really sorry for you.
