i just started missioning to raise some standings after a long absense. i have only one npc corp that i can run lvl 2 missions.. is it better to go arties or autos for my first time doing lvl 2's? i have about average skills in bc's..

Artillery takes some getting used to against frigs and without decent drone skills you might find yourself in trouble if they get under your tracking.
Use autos.

Use a Rupture for level 2s. Use a Cane for level 3s.

Since you are less experienced I'd have to agree with using AC's, just make sure to add 1 or 2 Tracking Enhancer modules.
If you have high Frigate skills, Rifter can romp thru level 2 missions. Cruiser would probably do the same with average skills.
I use a T2 fitted arty cane with passive shield and active hardener tank for level 3 missions. It works great with high skill level.

oh, a frigate you say? have not done any mission in a long time so i didnt know.
i can fly a Rifter/Jaguar/Hound with ease and have alot of V's in the basic support skills. hmmm, i guess i will try this rifter you speak of LOL. while skilling for the the things i need for the cane. sounds like a plan.

Hurricane is an overkill for level 2 missions. Since I like overkill, it is good choice 
Either fit will work. The simple truth is that most people never learn how to use artillery so they tell other people to use ac. All my mission boats are artillery fits. AC fits require running around a lot, lots of micromanagement, and I hate micromanagement so I fit artillery. Since you don't seem to know how to use artillery, use ac.
Another option for level 2 is to use assault frigate. Or you can do the normal thing and use cruiser.

If you've got high level skills with Jaguar, then use that with a Tech 2 fit up. You should be able to rip thru level 2 missions like a hot knife thru warm butter.
I know a few players that do level 4 missions in Faction fitted Tech 2 Frigates. They can complete them within the bonus time.
