I want to take out a hulk flying bot in highsec (0.6). Assuming it does not have an expensive tank what is the most cost effective caldari ship to do it in? I want to make sure the job gets done first time. Will a drake do the job or will I need a gank fit raven?
Thanks

Edited by: Allah Gold on 15/08/2011 06:12:02 Quad BCU HAM Drake, target painter (or two) plus Rage ammo = dead Hulk. Faction w/ T1 launchers should still work though, but I prefer Rage because macro miners seriously p*ss me off.

The average Hulk has about 10,000 EHP with the weakest resist being EM.

I don't know if a drake will work, it seems like a poor choice to me. My suicide canes use 6x t2 425's (RF PP), 2x t2 HAM's (rages) and 4x t2 gyro's. With that I'm able to kill around 90% of hulks I meet. The thing to keep in mind though is that's pumping out well over 1000 dps overloaded. You just can't get that kind of dps out of a drake to my knowledge. I'm not saying it's impossible, but it's one of the last BC's I'd look to for the task. The ferox is also poorly suited to the task. The primary BC hulls for solo are the brutix (best), hurricane (2nd) and harbinger (3rd due to more expensive ammo, otherwise equal).
I have found the best damage type to be thermal. Hulks may have more shields than armor, but not enough more that you can completely ignore their armor HP and EM resistance on it. When I tried using RF EMP on my canes, my success rate dropped from 90% to 0%. It might have just been luck of the draw as I only tried it a few times, but it doesn't bode well and I don't plan to try RF EMP again.

Edited by: Allah Gold on 16/08/2011 01:22:51 I'd certainly rather use something like a Brutix, but it's more than possible to get Brutix DPS out of a Drake if you're willing to completely ignore tank, which of course won't matter much in a suicide gank scenario.
My setup does about 850-900 DPS overloaded w/ kin IIRC,and the missiles actually have a fair bit of alpha to them. Bear in mind, this is with 3% RoF and damage implants, but it's still possible to do.
Honestly, it's better to ship scan them before hand w/ a passive targeter to see what they're running, then base damage types off of that.
The Brutix for me is still the go-to Hulk ganker, but the Drake can do it in a pinch if need be.

It is all about the alpha...who cares if you have dps. If you can't kill it before concord kills you then it is a fail.
My advice...while not the best would be to use a Geddon with 5 sentries. 7 1400mm arty 1 energy neut with 4 gyros at 22k with emp. Bot hulks rarely pack much tank.
if you pack the mids with sensor boosters with scan res sometimes you can get the drones to pop the pod...i havent managed but i didn't want the sec hit at the time...i have managed to lock the pod in .6 and .5. I have killed a bot hulk in a .9 like this as well.
It is also possible to use a raven with em torps,4 target painters, and ballistic controls. wouldnt hurt to fit arty in the remaining slots either with a reactor core...however i have not done this personally i have seen it done. The hulk usually dies in the second volley. Make sure you are overheated and make sure all modules are blinking before you lock.

Edited by: Dirk Magnum on 17/08/2011 22:14:34 I have about a 95% success rate with the Brutix when it comes to ganking Hulks. I don't even ship-scan my targets and do just as well in both 0.5 and 0.6 (you can do it up to 0.8 if the Hulk has no tank.)
T2-fit Ferox does about as much overloaded DPS (750+) as a non-overloaded T1-fit Brutix. Overloaded T1-fit Brutix does 850+. If you absolutely, positively have to use a Caldari gunboat to do this then you need an uber-skilled, damage hardwired, T2-fit, overloaded Ferox. It is neither cost-effective nor a sure thing outside of 0.5 sec. On the other hand you only need BC level 1 since it's not like you're getting an additional damage boost on the Ferox from that skill.
Also for reference: overloaded T2-fit Drake puts out deeps at a rate between the described T2-fit Ferox and the T1-fit Brutix. Brutix hands-down is the most cost-effective solo suicide ganker.
