I've been a bit curious lately as to why people often bother ice mining. Every time I look at the numbers, it always seems that mining ore in high sec nets more ISK/h than mining Ice, however every time I'm in a system with an ice field, its packed full.
If my math with current market prices is correct, a Mackinaw pulling in 44 units of ice every hour can net about 7-8 mil an hour. On the other hand, a HULK pulling in 1500m3 of ore per cycle, can rake in 9-10 mil an hour. Why bother mining ice when it would be more efficient to mine ore, sell it, and buy ice with the profits?

Edited by: Tauranon on 19/08/2011 07:15:00 Edited by: Tauranon on 19/08/2011 07:14:46 Ice is lower attention than ore mining, you can avoid moving altogether by checking at the start there is enough ice in your target to last the whole mining session, and then the cycles are infrequent.
Grav, mission and infrequently mined belts can be lower attention too because of having larger roids, but public highsec belts usually have my alt in motion and rescanning to avoid uselessly small rocks etc. ie ice actually nets its theory yield, ore often doesn't because of small logistic issues.

Ah... so because of the sheer size of ice asteroids, you can obtain near 100% mining efficiency, while the smaller ore asteroids run out, meaning you need to reset your lasers, find new belts, ect. So in the end, does the easier logistics really make up for the lost yield? Or is it just easier to do while afk?

pretty much it's easier to AFK.
Can set up in a belt, and mine for about 5 mins before having to worry about running out of space... =========================

On runs ore vs ice ice runs you will make more run for run.

On something of a sidenote, is it at all worthwhile to jetcan ice?(versus hauling it the Mackinaw) Pretty much every ice belt I've ever seen has been swarmed by an innumberable numer of GSC's, which leads me to believe that canflipping may be somewhat more common in ice fields.

People mine ice because there are so many POSes in high-sec! Last time I checked mining Veldspar (Tritanium) still made more isk than mining ice. The latest economic report stated that ice prices are still falling whereas the prices for PI-related POS fuel continue to rise since CCP cacked up by introducing resource degradation. High-sec ice belts are like a rotting corpse to a vulture;best place to find extortionists & suicide gankers is an ice belt!

Another thing to consider is that some people mine with multiple accounts. You can run a lot more ice mining accounts than you can roid mining.

Which resources degrade and how long does it take please ?
Do you lose an amount of Ice if you keep it too long or an amount of the processed materials Ice makes ?

I think they mean that you have to move extractors around on planets when doing PI, in order to keep up resource yields. Makes PI more of a hassle.

No the resource depletion refers to Planetery PI resources not mined ice or ice products
