I'm preparing to upgrade to a Machariel soon. I've always used artillery, but almost all the fits I see mount 800mm autocannons. Can I please get some opinions on why this is best? I'd also like to see anyone's fits for an artillery Machariel. Thanks for your input.

800mm Autocannons are vastly more damage than any artillery fit, and with 70k falloff, range generally isn't an issue especially with how maneuverable the boat is. As far as I know, there's no reason to use artillery on a Machariel.
That said, you can use artillery just fine. It's just suboptimal.

I assume this is PvE. I usually use Autocannons, but when I decide to use artillery, this is the fit I use. I don't like spending money on pimp tanking modules and this has more than enough tank. As for the rigs, the Machariel I bought already had the T2 CCC rig fitted. It seems wrong to pull that off there. Faction ammo adds another 100 turret DPS, which is pretty substantial.

Assuming you are flying a Maelstrom, try some ACs on it. You will never go back to Arti.

I use an arty fit for a handful of missions (Smash the Supplier blitz in particular is nice here). It looks like this:
[Machariel, boomstick arties] Republic Fleet Gyrostabilizer Republic Fleet Gyrostabilizer Republic Fleet Gyrostabilizer Reactor Control Unit II Tracking Enhancer II Tracking Enhancer II Tracking Enhancer II
Domination X-Large Shield Booster Invulnerability Field II Invulnerability Field II Shield Boost Amplifier II Core C-Type 100MN Afterburner

Large Projectile Burst Aerator II Large Core Defence Capacitor safeguard I [empty rig slot]
Getting over 800 DPS with artillery is somewhat insane (including a G2-Delta).
For the vast majority of missions I drop the 1400s for 800s, drop the RCU for T2 gyro and add whatever in the highs (usually a tractor, but that's more force of habit than anything; I'd objectively be better off with an auto targeter in almost all cases). In either case it's a cheap fit (for a Mach).
For PvP, yes, warp in, pop support, warp out.

Thanks for all the wisdom. I guess trying some ACs on my Maelstrom is a great way to get a feel for them.

I just upgraded to an auto Mach from my Maelstrom and wanted to give you two things to keep in mind - 1) bonused fallof and 2) BC-ish speed and agility. I loved my Mael, but it handles like a beached whale. The Mach is incomprehensibly good at getting it to where you need it to be, when you need it to be there - you really need to fly it to appreciate it. I'd highly recommend you just train Gal BS and get in the damn thing, you'll never look back.

Just wanted to point out that the Mach's targeting range is only 75ish km, so if you are planing to use arties to snipe, fit a range scripted sensor booster.

this. Though most fits run ACs, an arty mach is still the best sniper in the game.

Not really. Hypothetically, you would use 800's on a mael for the damage, but the range would frustrate you if any rats orbit at 40-50km. Then you might put on artillery to get range, but the tracking on closer orbiting rats might give you some problems.
Now, when you get the mach, it's the artillery range, plus the AC damage and tracking. Thusly, there is no reason to put artillery on a PvE mach. Any rat within your zone of death (approx 60-70km) is dead. Not really many rats that orbit farther out. In fact, none that I can think of. As mentioned, PvP is different.
