To be different from all the other ships, in the same way as the mix-and-match subsystem mechanic is different. ùùù ôIf you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡ you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.ö ù Karath Piki

It certainly gives me second thoughts about whether I want to train for and fly T3. SP is far more valuable than anything else in this game.

Lol you are so wrong. SP is just another mid-high level vehiculated currency. Plus they are all rank 1 skills. <sarcasm>I lost 1 days of training once. Oh noes... I will suck at EvE more now.</sarcasm>

Just an FYI... the SP loss only applies to [one random] T3 subsystem skill(s)... not to any 'ol skill on your character sheet. And seeing as how the T3 subsystem skills are all tier 1, it isn't that big a deal.
As for why this is... to give extra risk to a single ship that can be whimsically modified to do things that any of the T2 ships can do. _______________________

CCP realized T3's are powerful ships and wanted to add another drawback to T3's other then costs. This way it is preventing rich ******s from flying them to much (cause losing more then one a week wil hurt you skills) -------------

Not really. You can grind for isk or purchase plex with real money. However, SP increases by a more or less fixed rate (with some relatively minor adjustment via implants, attribute mapping, and matching skills with attributes). Maybe Dr. Caymus can afford to lose a few million SP, but my main has barely 10 million SP and still lacks many basic combat skills.

SP loss when your T3 explodes is also a way to balance the lower skill requirements vs T2. ---

Please elaborate how T3 SP loss balances anything. I would really like to understand the purpose for it.
If I could chose between T3 SP loss or learning skills, I think the later is more functional to the game, whatever the intentions. CCP got rid of learning skills as it should T3 SP loss. I see no value in it other than being another time sink in which this game already has too many.

Losing SP for a T3 sucks indeed, however if CCP were to get rid of the SP loss I think it would only make sense to make T3s more skill intensive such as changing all subsystem skills from rank 1 to rank 3.

SP is only useful if you actually use it.
The SP loss associated with the loss of a T3, isn't that severe anyway...210,000sp, 3.5 days training at most. A small price to pay, if you're having fun.

It discouraged a way of people paying more to win.. paying more isk even .
Balancing the difference between poor noobs and rich verterans has always been a major design element..
when I say "balance" i mean putting a damper and a serious diminishing returns gained with more skills and isk . Hard to quantify given rock paper scissors elements and player skill(not character skill) but keeping one higher skilled t3 ship equal to 2 tier2s not 4 tier twos, or maybe 5 t1 cruisers, or 3 or so battle cruisers, not a dozen was important.
The skill point cost hit the isk rich in a way much more difficult to replace discourging a frequent loss and replacment of something very powerfl relative to other players.
BUT
recent company goals released seem to point to maximizing income per player with less fear about losing players who can't grind or pay $ to keep up with the arms race..
... I suspect that they will get rid of that skill loss thing soon to encourage a greater use of t3's which would tend to get more people to buy plex to keep up. (unless they get disgusted and quit)

it was put in game so that even richer players (100+ bil isk) feel a little pain if they lose one.

That's right, but CCP didn't 'realize' anything, it was just meant to be that way from the very start. ---

I have come to the conclusion that we can all relax about this problem. When CCP finally offers SP for plex, anyone who can buy plex, whether with isk or RL money, will be able to fly T3's with impunity.

It's to balance out the power of T3 ships. Once you've been playing for a while 450m is a pocket change, but 4 days of training is something you can't buy.

depends...get a nice run of luck with ca's...jsut takes 2 good ones to make a profit from 1 dead t3.
Was in a corp, saw this guy lose 2 tengu's in 3 days. Gave him points for heart...did not let 2 lost skill levels stop him. Back in a 3rd tengu no time flat. He was one was one of the more adventurous players. Hit stomping grounds not in the "safety " of corp/alliane space. Avoided the sausage fests they broke down to I guess to make some more money.
Kind of a useful feature if you look at. Hell look at carriers to see how jsut a money hit doesn't keep their populations down. Carrier pilot with a lot of work can lose a carrier quite often and not care. Even better...jsut has to live a week or 2 of ratting then die in a combat op. the hull is reimbursed to a certain degree on comabt ops and unless motivated won't have the uber ds/o-fit the pve carrier does (hell most carrier pilots I saw took the trash items they got from crap faction spawns and ran them for pvp...you know the 2-8 mil fittings barely worht the fuel to jump back to empire, better than t2...but not missed if blown up). Just needs a good week or 2 of ratting....goes boom and carrier pilots goes meh..it made its money (worked out even better pre insurance nerf).
